A Note from Fr. Mark:

A joyful, holy, peaceful and Merry Christmas to you! On behalf of the staff, I extend a very warm welcome to each of you this joyful day. Welcome to all parishioners, visitors and friends. Welcome whether you are present in church weekly, come just a few mes each year, or this is your first visit. We are profoundly grateful you are here with us this day as we celebrate the great Solemnity of Christmas.

It does not take much reflec on to realize that 2017 has been a very hard year in the world. Even now wildfires rage out of control in Southern California, and we have known the same disaster here in Northern California. Interna on-al tensions run high, especially with North Korea. The poli cal conversa on is our country is difficult at best. Every-day there are new stories of sexual harassment, and worse. Teen suicide has become an increasingly prominent problem, touching more lives with tragedy. Personal struggles, losses, illness, suffering, and a general sense of anxi-ety, stress and fear fill the lives of many regardless of age or place. The prophet Isaiah could have been wri ng to us when he prophesied “For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples... (Isaiah 60:2) ” It can certainly feel that way!

However, Isaiah concluded that statement announcing joyfully, “…but the LORD will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you.” As a people of faith, this is the truth we celebrate in the season of Christmas. Despite the dark-ness and what we may perceive, the truth is that God is present with us; standing by us in every moment of every day offering His guidance, strength, support and mercy. He is “Emmanuel”; a tle which means “God is with us.” And what a gi that is. If the presence of a friend or loved when can help us through difficul es, imagine what the recognized presence of God can do.

By bearing in mind that “God is with us” and acknowledging His presence, we can find ourselves being more pa ent, more loving, more caring, more considerate, stronger, braver, moral and more at peace then we thought! We find loving, wise and compassionate ways of handling what life throws us. As Chris ans we do not escape the challenges of life, but by our presence as faith filled people we change how situa ons are handled and understood. We strive to make them opportuni es where care and reconcilia on, peace and affirma on are found.

The one whose birth we celebrate, Jesus, is our role model in this. No one would ever claim his life was easy or without challenges. He lived in a land occupied by a foreign army. He was opposed by the poli cal and religious leaders of his me. The popularity he briefly enjoyed turned against him vehemently, and most of his closest friends fled when he needed them desperately. One of his inner circle betrayed him, and another repeatedly denied know-ing him. He was publically humiliated and brutally executed. As he hung upon the cross “darkness fell over the whole land” (Mark 15:33) literally.

Yet through it all he did not react as we might. He con nued to care about others more than himself, offering for-giveness, mercy, hope and compassion. His faith that God was present enabled him to deal with all that life threw at him from a place of love, not fear, worry or anger. And when it all was resolved, to paraphrase Isaiah above, the LORD rose in glory.

So we gather to rejoice today not only in the birth of a child over two thousand years ago, but in the reality that God is s ll Emmanuel, God is s ll with us. That is a truth that can make a difference every day as we seek to let His glory shine upon us, banishing darkness forever more.
