    Dorothy Day/CUFH Collection for January

Because the monthly collection for the Dorothy Day House/Churches United fell on the weekend we livestreamed all Masses, we will not be doing a special collection here this month. You are encouraged to make a donation directly to them if you wish. Thank you.

    Reminder: No Singing during Mass

Please continue to be mindful that congregational singing is not permitted per the bishop’s most recent memo on guidelines for in-person masses. Only the musician(s) are allowed to sing. Thank you, we know this is hard to do.

    _______________

From St. Vincent de Paul After Jesus was baptized, He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. When you give a gift to St. Vincent de Paul Society, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust.

ÚÚÚÚWinterÚÚÚÚ ÚÚWeather PolicyÚÚ In the event of a blizzard warning in Fargo-Moorhead, or when St. Joseph’s School is cancelled, the parish office will be closed and all activities cancelled, including daily morning and weekend Mass. If a “no travel advisory” is in effect parishioners should stay home. Daily Mass as well as the 5 pm Saturday, 10 am Sunday, and 12 noon Spanish Mass will be livestreamed as usual on our Facebook page.

Cancellations will be decided on a case-by-case basis in the event of less severe weather (such as a winter storm warning). In all cases of severe weather, closings and cancellations will be advertised on local TV and radio stations KVLY, KFGO, and WDAY, and on the parish website.

Update on Father Raul by Swede Stelzer

I spoke with Fr Raul at 5 pm this evening (Tuesday January 5) and he is following the advice of his doctor; fluids, electrolytes, protein and vitamins. He says he is feeling better today but relative to yesterday, I don’t know what that really means. He will continue to be quarantined until January 17 and we need to continue to pray for his recovery. I picked up the blessed chalk from him that he spoke about at Sunday’s Mass for your Epiphany home celebration and we will have it in the office for your pick-up Wednesday morning, January 6. Thank you.

  • EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING

This ceremony of the blessing of the home and inscription of the initials of the three Magi above each door can be performed either by a priest or the father of the family. You will need holy water and chalk blessed by a priest. This is from the book The Twelve Days of Christmas by Elsa Chaney.

    Prayer:

    On entering the home,

Leader (Priest, if present, or father of the family): Peace be to this house. All: And to all who dwell herein.

All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

All Pray: The Magnificat (see next page). During the Magnificat, the room is sprinkled with holy water. After this is completed,

All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

Leader: Our Father. . . And lead us not into temptation All: But deliver us from evil. Leader: All they from Saba shall come All: Bringing gold and frankincense. Leader: O Lord, hear my prayer. All: And let my cry come to You.

Leader: Let us pray. O God, who by the guidance of a star didst on this day manifest Thine only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we who know Thee by faith may also attain the vision of Thy glorious majesty. Through Christ our Lord.

    All: Amen.

Leader: Be enlightened, be enlightened, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee—Jesus Christ born of the Virgin Mary.

All: And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light and kings in the splendor of thy rising, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon thee.

Leader: Let us pray. Bless, + O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord.

    All: Amen.

After the prayers of the blessing are recited, each room of the home is sprinkled with holy water. The initials of the Magi (Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar) are inscribed on or above the doors with the blessed chalk. (The initials, C, M, B, can also be interpreted as the Latin phrase "Christus mansionem benedicat" which means "Christ bless this house".)

    Example: 20 + C + M + B + 21 (The 20 and 21 signify the year, 2021.)

    Luke’s Latest

Liturgics Merry final weekend of Christmas, and happy 2021! It seems more important than ever to look ahead to the possibilities and potential of a new year. As you have likely heard by now, Father Raúl recently tested positive for Covid and is in quarantine for the next few weeks. All staff were tested as well, and we are fortunate to say that all tested negative. We here in the office are doing our best to continue serving your needs, and we remain committed to doing so. We ask that you remain patient with us over these next two weeks. Continued prayers for Father Raúl and the parish are appreciated as well!

In spite of the current state of our community and world, today’s Gospel paints a different mood for our liturgical celebration. We hear the story of Jesus being baptized in the Jordan, ready to begin his ministry and the many wonders to come. Baptism is considered to be the “gateway” into the Christian life. Jesus’s baptism especially is a joyful, hopeful event. I hope you might be able to take some time to reflect on today’s gospel---the very same optimism we experience here is the same as we should see this new year. What wonders in your life are yet to come this year? Will you invite Christ into these experiences?

    Your companion in Christ, -Luke

A PRAYER FOR PUTTING ON A FACE MASK “Heavenly Father, as I prepare to go into the world, help me to see the sacramental nature of wearing this cloth. Let it be a tangible and visible way of living love for my neighbors, as I love myself.

Christ Jesus, since my lips will be covered, uncover my heart, that people would see my smiles in the crinkles around my eyes. Since my voice may be muffled, help me to speak clearly, not only with my words, but with my actions.

Holy Spirit, as the elastic touches my ears, remind me to listen carefully and caringly to all those I meet. May this simple piece of cloth be shield and banner, and may each breath that it holds, be filled with your love. In your Name and in that love, I pray. Amen.”

The Magnificat The Prayer Of Mary

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, for he remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

    (Lk 1: 46-55)
