Pastor’s Corner

“The night shall be as bright as day” Exsultet In an address to young people, St. John Paul II said” “do not let hope die, stake your life on it. We are not the sum of our weakness and failures; we are the sum of the Fathers love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son” Yes on this Easter day we are called to heed those prophetic words. Our hope is in a Person, who came back from the dead. Our hope is renewed each morning no matter how dark the night has been. The light of Jesus Christ, risen from the dark night of death burnt away the guilt, the weaknesses, and fail-ures of the Apostles. Because of the Fathers love for them, they were able to rise from the tomb of their failures. They were able now to become the image of his Son and change the world. These past few weeks have been long night for us. A nightmare that we can’t seem to awake from. Yet scripture reminds us in St. Paul's words: “awake oh sleeper rise from the dead and Christ will give you light” Jesus risen is calling us all out of our tombs. The tombs of fear, despair, sin and regrets. With Christ ever before us the future is always full of hope and promise. The Fathers love now at work in us will en-able us to become the image of His son. May we all rise when this darkness is over to become better persons, kinder, compassionate, ever more grateful for the gift of life. As the beautiful Easter Exsultet proclaims: “the sanctifying power of the night dispels wickedness, washes away faults, restores innocence to the fallen and joy to mourners fosters concord and brings down the mighty’ Christ is risen let us rejoice and be glad. Gods grace and peace. Happy Easter Father Murray

Alleluia, Alleluia, Christ has risen from the dead!

Oh God, as we renew our Baptismal vows, help us to be made worthy of Eternal Life, that we may always seek to do Your will in our hearts and minds, that we may show others Your saving grace and Your love. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Our prayers and meditations during this season, which lasts seven weeks from Easter Sunday until Pentecost, can also remind us of the many ways in which what we commonly refer to as the Paschal Mystery is not some whimsical story, as some might have you believe these days. (The Paschal Mystery refers to Jesus’ Passion, Resurrection, Ascension into heaven, and sending of the Holy Spir-it.) Christ wasn’t just some philosopher or prophet but was indeed the Son of God, the Second per-son of the Trinity! After His Resurrection Jesus wasn’t a ghost either! One of the apostles, St. Thom-as, inadvertently helped provide proof of that when at Jesus’s behest, he touched His wounds from His crucifixion, after having previously expressed his doubts about our Lord’s rising from the dead. Luke’s gospel (24:42) includes another incident mentioned earlier when Christ ate some food in front of His joyfully amazed disciples. After His Resurrection, Christ had a glorified body, one that could move and appear or disappear instantaneously, much as the two disciples discovered when they met Him on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13). When we renew our baptismal vows at mass on Easter Sunday, we strengthen our faith and our determination to “walk in newness of life” with our Lord, as St. Paul put it so well (Rom 6:4). With Christ’s help we can free ourselves from the shackles of our sins and share Eternal Life with Him when we pass away. Just as He conquered death, then so can each of us, if we persevere in prayer and in sincerely trying to do His will! Easter prayers also help us reflect on the fact that these efforts towards holiness will indeed be re-warded in heaven. It is an important tenet of our faith that our bodies will join our souls either in heaven or in hell at the Last Judgment, reaffirming the eternal destination established at our death. Our bodies in heaven will be immortal, pain-free, and able to move at the speed of thought, much like Christ’s in the gospel accounts of events between His Resurrection and His Ascension! (Imagine never having to worry about aches and pains again? Or about some craving that will only make you miserable afterwards!) In our Easter prayers let us keep “our eyes on the prize” as we contemplate St. Paul’s words that our bodies shall rise in power and in incorruptibility to join our souls if we have attained Eternal Life with God.

POPE FRANCIS’S PRAYER TO MARY DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC O Mary, your always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of our country and people of the world, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us. Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

STATEMENT OF ARCHBISHOP NELSON J. PEREZ REGARDING THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) Over the last several weeks, the potential spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has dramatically impacted our lives and our communities. As the number of cases grow exponentially each day, government and health officials are diligently working to contain the virus.

During this pandemic, we are reminded that life is truly precious and that we all are one family under God. As Christians, we should respond to this pandemic with great faith and prudence. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have developed guidelines to help slow the spread the coronavirus. We should incorporate their strategies into our daily lives in an effort to protect ourselves as well as oth-ers, especially those most vulnerable, including the elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems. God is always by our side, he never abandons us. I invite you to join me in prayerful solidarity during this uncertain time. I remind you to keep your eyses fixed on the outstretched arms of Christ the crucified and Christ the merciful and to encounter others with charity and understanding. Let us pray for the sick, suffering, and their caregivers as well as government and health officials. With God’s grace and blessing, we will navigate the difficult waters of this challenge as a united human family, for after all is said and done, we are people of Hope! Nelson J. Perez Archbishop of Philadelphia

DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL?

The Tribunal is available to help people who have ex-perienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. On one hand the durable bond of marriage. This is God’s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic wedding was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, un-derstanding or ability? The annulment procedure ad-dresses these circumstances. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please tele-phone the Tribunal Office at 222 North l7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103 (215) 587-3750
