WHY AM I HERE?

All of us have had the experience of leaving one room and going into another to do some-thing, only to find that, upon arriving, we ask ourselves the question, Why am I here?” I have concluded that, when I told myself the reason for going, I proceeded too quickly and left the reason behind. My solution is to return to the place where the decision was made in hopes that the thought would re-enter my mind. I suggest that, since we have a lot of experience asking this question, that we ask it the next

time that we enter a church. Why am I here? We know that we made a decision to come to church but do we remember why we made that decision? Are we here because we expect to receive something? Are we here because we want to bring something with us? Are we desirous of an experience which will invigorate us? Are we here out of habit? Are we here because we “have to” be here? There may be hundreds of other reasons – most of them valid. Sometimes, the answer to the question is, “I don’t know.” Now let’s move from being in church to being in our home. There are a lot of things happening in the world in which we could be involved. And there are a lot of things going on in our church in which we could also be-come involved. Most of these things in the world and in our church do not require a full, life-time commit-ment. They just require a few minutes or, even, an hour of our time on an infrequent basis. Our reasons for not participating run the gamut from “I am not physically able” to “I do not want to”. In any case, we could ask ourselves our original question with a slight addition, “Why am I here and not there?” Deacon Jim

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE February 3, 2019 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Today's Gospel is one of tension and contradiction. We enter the scene at the local synagogue. It is near the beginning of Jesus' earthly ministry, and he has returned home to Nazareth for a short while. There, in the midst of the men who watched him grow up and who played with him as a boy in the dusty streets, Jesus proclaims that he is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah. The response is understandably mixed. "All spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, 'Isn't this the son of Jo-seph?'" Jesus reminds them - none too gently - of the Israel-ites' rejection of the prophets throughout history. Not only did the people ignore Elijah and Elisha, but they worked miracles among the pagans instead. Then comes the rage. "They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down head-long." No one likes to be reminded of their own faults. In the deeply religious Jewish society, nobody wanted to be the unfaithful one. Jesus exposes the sins of the community, and it drives them not to conversion, but to rage. We can consider our own time. How often, when someone is contracted, do they quickly resort to anger, name-calling, and undermining the reputa-tion of the other? How quickly we want to destroy! This Sunday, we ought to consider our own lives. Do we listen to the prophetic voices around us, even when they threaten to upturn our expectations? If we hear something difficult, something that reminds us of our own sin, do we accept the opportunity to prayerfully ponder? If we allow ourselves to be open to the prophetic voices in our own lives, we'll notice that God speaks through the unexpected, if we have ears to hear it.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The song of the angels, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a widespread belief in the first religions of the world that God stirred creation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God’s presence have always been inseparable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. “Heaven and earth are full of your glory,” and we are not passive onlookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a well‑insulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing—just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly‑discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, everyone’s in the choir; why not start practicing now? --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
