GOSPEL MEDITATION
Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II
noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On the
Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expecta!ons
and divergent priori!es can cause tension in even the most
loving family situa!ons. This is true for us, and it was true for
Jesus!
In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A
large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing s!ff
opposi!on from his family. This was likely Jesus' large,
extended family. The Semi!c language has no specific words
for extended rela!ves, so everyone is "brother" or "sister."
The en!re clan has go&en wind of Jesus' preaching, and they
are not amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He
is out of his mind.'" To make ma&ers worse, the religious
authori!es even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a
demon. It's a mess by any standards.
The family's perspec!ve is perhaps understandable. In Jewish
culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling
and appren!ceships, none of which Jesus had done. The
family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For
them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputa!on of
their family!
Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are
my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is
about. He has always known he would be about the business
of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the
business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In
this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the
King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspec!ve of
his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not
depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a
wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God."♡
History of the Feast of the Sacred Heart
The first feast of the Sacred Heart was
celebrated on August 31, 1670, in
Rennes, France, through the efforts of
Fr. Jean Eudes (1602-1680). From
Rennes the devo!on spread, but it took
the visions of St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque (1647-1690) for the devo!on
to become universal.
In all of these visions in which Jesus
appeared to St. Margaret Mary, the
Sacred Heart of Jesus played a central
role. The "great appari!on," which
took place on June 16, 1675 during the octave of the Feast
of Corpus Chris!, is the source of the modern Feast of the
Sacred Heart. In that vision, Christ asked St. Margaret Mary
to request that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated
on the Friday a*er the octave (or eighth day) of the Feast of
Corpus Chris!, in repara!on for the ingra!tude of men for
the sacrifice that Christ had made for them. The Sacred
Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but
His love for all mankind.
The devo!on became quite popular a*er St. Margaret
Mary's death in 1690, but, because the Church ini!ally had
doubts about the validity of St. Margaret Mary's visions, it
wasn't un!l 1765 that the feast was celebrated officially in
France. Almost 100 years later, in 1856, Pope Pius IX, at the
request of the French bishops, extended the feast to the
universal Church. It is celebrated on the day requested by
our Lord-the Friday a*er the octave of Corpus Chris!, or 19
days a*er Pentecost Sunday.

“I am about to do a new thing.”
Are you discerning the inclina!on to do something new for the
Lord, perhaps as a priest or in the consecrated life? If you
think God may be offering you this grace, call Fr. Ma#hew
Mason at 663-0132 or write [email protected].
Fr. Ma#hew Mason and the Diocese of Manchester
invite high school boys, ages 14-18, to Quo Vadis Days,
a 5-day camp to be held August 6-10 at Northeast
Catholic College, in Warner, NH. The schedule includes
hiking, swimming, canoeing, sports and games, daily
Mass, and prayer and retreat-like talks on discerning a
voca!on. The
focus of the camp
is voca!onal
discernment as a
whole, not just
voca!ons to the
priesthood.
The cost for the
camp is only $50,
and financial aid is available. For more informa!on, see
the poster on the bulle!n board or visit
liveinblackandwhite.com. Fr. Mason can also be
reached at [email protected] or 663-0196.
St. Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church
June 13
“St. Anthony, St. Anthony, come around! Something's lost
that must be found!" Did you learn this rhyme in childhood?
St. Anthony of Padua is more than the patron saint for lost
items. By his life, he shows a special interest in lost souls. St.
Anthony was born to noble parents, but he preferred a
simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He joined
the Franciscan order in 1220. He
quickly became known for his
eloquence in preaching. He had a way
of reaching all sorts, from nobles to
clergy to those who had fallen away
from the Catholic faith. In addi!on to
preaching, St. Anthony organized
supplies for the poor and nego!ated
release for prisoners of war between
Italian city-states. However you or
your loved ones feel lost this week,
pray for St. Anthony's intercession!
Welcome Ruby Isabella Rizzo, daughter of Frank Rizzo and Allyson Potvin, who was baptized May 20. Ruby and her family live in London, England, but was baptized here in the presence of her extended family.
