FALL 2012
Student Aux. Services
Page 2—3 Happy Fall All!
As many of you know, Amanda Kelley,
director of Marketing and Communication
for SAS, will be leaving us on November 9
to be closer to family in Ohio. Please see
my heartfelt farewell message on page 3 to
one of our most respected colleagues.
I’d also like to take the opportunity to
share some important reminders.
First, don’t forget to VOTE
on Tuesday, November 6!
And second, I’d like
everyone in Student
Auxiliary Services to take
advantage of Better Me’s
upcoming Excellus Blue 4U free health
screenings. You should have recently
received information via email and the
A Message from Howard Ward
schedule is
below for you
to mark your
calendars. I
am asking all
supervisors to
become
familiar with
the details of
this offering
so that we can
better explain
the program
to our team members. I will be creating a
SAS Wellness Team with the purpose of
working with Better Me staff to get the
right information out to everyone
regarding the worthwhile benefits and
programs offered by the Better Me
program. Let’s work hard to stay and/or
get healthier!
God Bless,
“H”

Watch your email for semi-
monthly Eco Tips prepared by
Amanda Frey, systems admini-
stration staff assistant for
Dining Services, that include
tips that staff can implement to
reduce their carbon footprint.
ECO TIPS: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce Tip: Utilize electronic
software and technologies, such as
EverNote and OneNote, for filing,
meeting notes, and storage. Make
paperless a priority and share files
digitally. Limit energy consumption
by turning off lights, appliances, and
electronics.
Reuse Tip: Reuse paper supplies a
second time by writing on the back
before recycling and utilize durable
containers for reusable filing.
Recycle Tip: Utilize RIT’s single
stream recycling bins and recycle all
plastics, glass, metals, and paper.
Trash/Waste, plastic bags, and lids/
caps are NOT recyclable!
Benefits: Decreases waste, supply,
and energy costs and RIT’s carbon
footprint. Improves data manage-
ment, file sharing, control access,
and processes.

Sustainability and Fiscal Responsibility: Fall Term Update
Staff throughout Student Auxiliary Services do their part to reduce, reuse, and
recycle. This term’s notable examples below reflect SAS’ support of and
dedication to RIT’s sustainability goals and F&A’s value of fiscal responsibility.
BEFORE
AFTER
University Commons Grill Areas
Craig Hauschild, grounds foreman for
Facilities, came up with an amazing
reintroduction of materials for University
Commons grill and picnic areas. Craig
reused discarded marble pieces from the
FMS ‘bone yard’ to create a defined
entrance to the areas, used surplus
shrubs from the Global Village landscape
project, and separated some older
daylilies to produce the above refined
product. The entire project was done
with $24 worth of concrete and a lot of
sweat and sustainable creativity on the
part of Craig.
In the Works:
Working on implementing
composting of pre- and some
post-consumer waste in our
dining facilities.
Investigating the feasibility of having
more of our waste oil processed and
converted to biodiesel on campus by
the RIT Pollution Prevention
Institute.
Working with a student on a proposal
to participate in the EPA's Food
Recovery Challenge which will help
divert near end of cycle food to
people in need through a partnership
with Foodlink.

Farewell to Amanda Kelley, SAS
When Amanda first
shared with me
several weeks ago
that she was
planning on moving
to Ohio to be with
family, I thought to
myself, “This is déjà
vu all over again.”
First Patty Spinelli
and now another outstanding colleague
and friend leaving lil ole selfish me to
return to family roots. Certainly, I
understood Amanda’s desires for moving
because I did the same thing 12 years ago
when I left Ohio to return to Rochester to
take care of my elderly mother. Even
though the pending sense of loss looms
heavy in the office, I can’t deny that I
have been extremely BLESSED to have an
opportunity to watch Amanda establish
herself as a highly respected young
professional woman here at RIT.
Amanda’s work ethic is borderline
insane, which can only be matched by
her outgoing personality and unbridled
enthusiasm that has helped her produce
the best product for those who have
come to know her across RIT. I have
anointed myself the ‘visionary’ who
rescued Amanda from the doldrums of
her TV Guide position in New York City
and she has proven my omnipotence by
performing at a level that has exceeded
everyone’s expectations.
There are so many things that I will
remember and cherish about Amanda’s
time with us—from her passion for her
job, her ability to consume an inordinate
amount of food and not gain a pound, her
crazy goth stuff which I still don’t
understand, her loyalty, and most
importantly, her wonderful smile that
lights up a room. Amanda, “head west”
my friend and enjoy your family,
however, please never forget that you
will always have a family of wonderful
friends here at RIT who will miss you.
Be BLESSED Always,
“H”

meaning as pasta
equates with anger,
rice with doubt,
soup with revenge,
and so it goes.”

Gene Polisseni Center Breaks Ground
Campus members and fans of RIT’s
Division I men’s and women’s hockey
teams cheered on university leaders and
dignitaries as they broke ground at the
Gene Polisseni Center site on October 19.
The center is scheduled to open in time
for the Tiger’s 2014-2015 hockey season.
Per Bob Finnerty, RIT University News,
“The Gene Polisseni Center site is
directly south of the Student Alumni
Union and adjacent to the existing
athletic turf field. The location creates
an “athletics spine” running north to
south between the residence halls and
the university’s academic corridor.
Additional sporting and student
recreation facilities within close
proximity to the new arena include Clark
Gymnasium, Gordon Field House and
Activities Center, RIT Stadium, the turf
field, tennis courts and the Frank Ritter
Arena, which will continue to remain
open as an ice skating venue.”
The arena’s design, created by world-
renowned architectural firm BBB
Architects, will attract prominent teams
from across the nation to RIT’s campus
and significantly enhance the game
experience for Tigers fans.

the Gene Polisseni Center, visit rit.edu/
