Planned activities for the future
For the celebrating of 2015 year, “Year of Light”, our SPIE student chapter suggests to organize
the following events:
1. “Magic Optics”: Popularization and spread the basics of optics to the schoolchildren and
students. In this event we will carry out a number of laser shows and laser games with
competitions and prizes. We would like to make up optical designs to demonstrate the principal of
optics.
2. “Photonic-freestyle football”: We will spend a weekend in a ski resort which is located nearby
Udomlya town, Tver region. The whole action will comprise skiing competition, football and table
tennis tournaments, optical-board games, photonic-freestyle football master-class, and also dance
party.
3. “Science & Career”: In the frame Optics 2015 we will invite the leading specialists on graphene
topic to give the lectures in ITMO University. This topic is interested for students in different
scientific areas. The purposes of the lectures are explanation of graphene physics and review of
actual graphene research directions.
Also we are going to organize the excursion to “TYDEX” Company in Saint-Petersburg,
Russian Federation. The company specializes in custom manufacturing of optical components and
instruments for research and the industry.
4. “Optical days at school”: Our chapter has decided to make series of events (5-7) in the
secondary schools (about 150 participants per each event). Each event will be divided into 2 parts:
lectures and demonstrations. On the lecture schoolchildren will find out explanation of the lasers
physics and laser applications, holography, scanners, touch screens, optical and quantum
communications and computers.
5. “SPIE Student Members Party”: In beginning of April, 2015 we are going to organize the
informal social event at a local bar for all SPIE’s members of our chapter. The meeting will
comprise pizza-party in the bar and joint trip to the cinema after all. Organizers will take care of
creating a good atmosphere on the event.
