    Were Official...

    Our past, our future

College is an experience that all students look back and reflect upon. The experiences shared during this time often define an individual and helps guide them throughout life. For many of us, SUA was a large portion of this college experience! Syracuse University was also the first experience that many of us had away from our homes and families. However, that void was quickly filled by the family we joined when we volunteered with SUA.

We all have stories from our past with Syracuse University Ambulance. For many of us, it was the highlight of our college experience. From the amazing yearly celebration, to stories of setting not one, but two ambulances on fire, we all have experiences we hold close to us. However I believe our shared experiences go beyond that. Our past at SUA formed a family that we still look to be part of and cherish.

Many graduating alumni would leave SUA and miss those experiences. Often times, we would have Alumni come back to SUA to visit and work an overnight shift to relive their experiences with current students. These opportunities helped us realize that the Alumni had more to give SUA as an organization. Moreover, we contribute to professional development of current students. Many Alumni wanted to create an outlet for all members, both current and past, as well as help the organization that we grew to call family and our home

away from home. Shortly after my graduation, I reached out to fellow alumni. It was at a meeting at Dinosaur BBQ (our first Board Meeting) where paperwork was officially signed to begin the Syracuse University Ambulance Alumni Association. It was our hopes that this newly formed organization would help tie the past with the present and help develop and grow SUA into the best possible organization for both the University as well as its membership.

SUA has fostered and helped develop a great number of professionals that span a wide spectrum of experiences. Alumni now hold a variety of careers; from emergency medical service professionals, nurses, doctors, lawyers, military professionals, and countless other positions that literally are represented across the globe. The alumni of SUA formed the Syracuse University Ambulance Alumni Association in an effort to give back and assist current students, not only in the present, but in the future. Exiting students are often looking for guidance in what to do following graduation. As Alumni, we will always be there to help. The SUA Alumni Association is an excellent avenue to network with a variety of people that work across not only the country, but the world. We are always available to share our knowledge with the current membership, as well as help guide them through the next steps following graduation that we all once took.

    GENERATING REVENUE, OPPORTUNITY

FUNDRAISING For more than 40 years, Syracuse University Ambulance has provided life-saving emergency prehospital care, safety education, and non-emergency transport assistance to the students, faculty and staff of Syracuse University, and to the greater Syracuse, New York area.

As SUA continues to set standards for quality of care and stewardship, it is now our turn as alumni to set a standard of financial support, to ensure their continued preeminence and growth as a premier collegiate-based emergency response agency.

The Syracuse University Alumni Association will begin accepting donations this Summer, in support of the educational, training, and professional development goals of Syracuse University Ambulance. Additionally, it is our hope to grow this network of support to include endowed scholarship and fellowship opportunities - drawing from the experiences and accomplishments of our diverse alumni base.

Your tax-deductible gifts are a reflection of our continued commitment to SUA, and will help drive the future successes of such a fine organization. The Alumni Association will make a formal announcement at the

    Future Directions

A little more than a decade ago, I was on the active roster when SUA celebrated its 30th Anniversary. When I attended the 40th Anniversary Banquet last year, the organizations growth had far surpassed anything I couldve imagined. The banquet hall itself had literarily doubled in size since the 30th. Hows it going to look at the 50th?

As any commencement approaches, its a perfect time to evaluate future goals. What influences can be derived and how can it alter outcomes? Our mission as an Alumni Association will always be to support that of the organization that gave so much opportunity to us. We exist not only to help SUA achieve its organizational goals, but to help its members achieve theirs as well. Even as time brings change, our mission remains constant.

In fact, quite a lot has changed since the heading pic above was shot. As Steve alluded to in his cover piece, the rig on the right was actually on fire at one point during my tenure. The grocery-getter in center was constantly shamed by every other emergency vehicle in existence (note that this sups vehicle is barely

even seen in the pic). The rig on the left was brand new. Now, not one of those vehicles is in service. Syracuse Fires Engine Co. 7, which was a staple of the University Ave corridor (and 111 Waverly for that one night at least) was closed due to economical cutbacks. And those faces depicted above now represent numerous professions, skill sets, and abilities all of whose seeds were sewn around the time that picture was snapped.

Therein lies what makes SUA so special. First and foremost, SUAs contributions to the campus community can never be understated. This Association serves as insurance for that very fact. Through networking, resource allocation, and fellowship, we exist to further both the current membership and Alumnis personal and professional growth in any way that we can.

For the thousands who bleed orange, there will always be those select few who are ready, willing, and able to apply some pressure if needed. It only makes sense that those few should march forward together, toward whatever the future may hold.

Congratulations, Class of 2014 and welcome to your Alumni Association.
