Next week’s readings - Lent: 3rd Sunday Exodus 17:3-7 Psalm 95 Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 John 4:5-42

In this Lenten season, our focus is on the psalms we sing each Sunday. The refrain for today (Psalm 33) is: “Let your mercy be on us, O Lord, as we place our trust in you.” Psalm 33 paints a picture of God’s mercy placed upon us, almost as if we could wear it as a cloak or shield. In the transfiguration, Jesus appears to Peter, James, and John in clothing as “white as light.” We might consider the event in our

own lives when we, too, wore clothing that covered us in the light of God. In the white baptismal garment we were proclaimed “a new creation” clothed in Christ. The Church uses Lent as a primary time for the celebration of Baptism. For we who have already been baptized it can be a time to renew our own baptismal promises, and to reflect on how often we think of ourselves as “clothed in the mercy and love of Christ.

Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home) Chapter Two – The Gospel of Creation This chapter is divided into seven sections:

I. The Light Offered by Faith II. The Wisdom of the Biblical Accounts III. The Mystery of the Universe IV. The Message of Each Creature in the Harmony of Creation V. A Universal Communion VI. The Common Destination of Goods VII. The Gaze of Jesus

Pope Francis begins this section by acknowledging that some will wonder why his document, addressed to all people of good will, would include the convictions of believers. Some deny all religions, others view religions simply as a subculture to be tolerated. Nonetheless, science and religion, with their distinctive approaches to understanding reality, can enter into an intense dialogue fruitful for both. Next week - I. The Light Offered by Faith

Haiti Secondary School Fund Drive March 2020 During Lent, we have our annual fund drive to support the secondary school, College St. Jean Baptiste (CSJB), named after SJB. Before CSJB was established in Baradères, Haiti, students had to travel to Port-au-Prince or Les Cayes to complete a high school education. This is similar to living in MD and traveling to upstate New York. Of course, this possibility only existed for students who had family or friends in the distant cities ready to house and feed them. The high school opened new and exciting opportunities to the people of Baradères. That high school was established with our donations and named for our own parish.

Your generosity supports the cafeteria program at College St. Jean Baptiste, the secondary school of our sister parish in Baradères Haiti. It costs about $1700 each month to provide hot lunch for the 365 students -- that's less than $5 per student per month! During his visit here in October, Fr. Noemi Ambroise, pastor of our sister parish St. Pierre in Baradères, told us, "A salient aspect of your support for the students’ lunch program is that it does not require us to buy foreign products; so the lunch program also supports local farmers and their products such as: millet, corn, peas, bananas, potatoes, etc."

Consider bringing your lunch instead of buying it at work or school or skip a latte one day a month. Donate the cost of the meal or beverage to CSJB. You will feed a student hot lunch for an entire month! There are 365 students currently enrolled at CSJB, and they need your help. 100% of your donations go directly to Baradères. Please be as generous as you can. Envelopes are in the pews during Lent. Thank you!

Share the Cross 2020 During our Lenten journey, we can make a difference by “sharing the cross of Christ" in a personal way. Below is a sample of suggestions. More information will be in the bulletin during Lent. Select the cross of your choice as part of your Lenten journey. The following CST principle lists ways in which we help those in need and build community at SJB. Each item is labeled on a colored cross and found on the wooden cross or in the basket at the foot of the altar in the Church. Items listed below with an * are new this year. Bring all donated items listed March 28 and 29 to the Gym. The crosses are color coded as follows:

Call to Family & Community & Participation Yellow Care for God’s Creation Green Human Rights & Responsibilities Red Dignity of Life Orange Preferential Option for the Poor Blue Solidarity Purple

• Do you believe that, “We are all really responsible for all”? If so, how does this challenge you? • How can you join with others to take concrete steps—big or small—to help build a society of solidarity? • Who are Jesus’ “least” brothers and sisters around the world today? How can we participate together in Christ’s

mission?

Solidarity: • Pray for our brothers and sisters in Haiti as they continue their struggle to change their quality of life. • St. Pierre in Baradères, Haiti: Donate money to help purchase solar panels, inverter supplies, 12 - 12 Volt 100 Amp

“The solidarity which binds all men together as members of a common family makes it impossible for wealthy nations to look with indifference upon the hunger, misery and poverty of other nations whose citizens are unable to enjoy even elementary human rights. The nations of the world are becoming more and more dependent on one another and it will not be possible to preserve a lasting peace so long as glaring economic and social imbalances persist.” —St. John XXIII, Mother and Teacher (Mater et Magistra), no. 157

St. John the Baptist Catholic Community 2020 LENTEN SUPPER TALKS

"I can see clearly now the Son has come!"

Come to the Lyon Center to observe the Lenten fast by sharing a simple supper of soup and bread. During the meal, we listen to a presentation on a topic related to the social concerns of our Church.

Our goal this year is to help members identify ways to: • make room in our hearts for those with whom we disagree; • recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God; • respond in love to that reality to find Christ in others; • encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others and

invite others to do the same; • presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy; • strive to understand before seeking to be understood.

3/13 Johnny Zokovitch: “The Call to Discipleship: Word and Witness?” For many Catholics, Lent is a time of serious reflection on what it means to follow Jesus. Johnny will focus on what this call to discipleship looks like in the context of living out our faith concretely in the world today, exploring both the political and personal dimensions of discipleship to Jesus. He'll draw on the work of Pax Christi USA and Pax Christi International, non-governmental organizations committed to the promotion of human rights and peace. Johnny Zokovitch is the Executive Director of Pax Christi USA, the national Catholic peace and justice movement. Previously, Johnny worked in Brussels with Pax Christi International as the Senior Communications Officer promoting the work of human rights and the promise of nonviolence in addressing conflict. For nearly 15 years, he lived at and co-directed the Gainesville (FL) Catholic Worker House, an intentional community serving and living with people who are homeless, addicted, impoverished, and mentally ill. He holds an MA in Theology with a concentration in biblical studies from the University of Notre Dame and has written for, or been featured in, National Catholic Reporter, US Catholic, Belief.Net, The Other Side, the Encyclopedia of Race and Racism, and elsewhere.

Poverty Statistics in our Community: Food insecurity is the state of being without consistent, reliable access to a sufficient amount of affordable, nutritious food. Montgomery County is an extraordinary place to live and raise a family. Our community is beautiful and diverse, but even so there exists a disparity of living conditions that often goes unnoticed, and hunger and food insecurity are unmistakably present. Our County is listed among the wealthiest of the nation, yet: • 40% of the elementary children in public schools qualify

for free or discounted lunches. • The need for food stamps has grown more than 150%. • One third of Manna’s participants are people living with

disabilities or seniors living on a fixed income. • 16.3% of the children and 8.3% of the adult population

are food insecure, more than any other County in Maryland.

• 9.4% of our County’s children and 6.9% of the adult population live below the poverty line.

The Season of Lent † “The Light is on For You” Confessions available Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8 p.m. during Lent in the Church. † Lent is marked by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. † Prayer is a very individual thing. There’s daily Mass, weekly Stations of the Cross, increased reading and reflection on the Bible, devotions like the Rosary, centered prayer, etc. There is no one way. † Fasting means: • on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, we eat no

meat (for those ages 14 and up.) • on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday, the faithful

between the ages of 18 & 59 eat one main meal or two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal and nothing in between.

• at other times, it is common, though not required, to place other restrictions on ourselves as a means of “keeping” Lent.

Living the Gospel Series

Next session in the “Living the Gospel: Contemplation and Action” Adult Faith Formation Series (A Joint Venture of St. Camillus, Resurrection, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Churches) Workshop: Serving God’s People beyond

our Parish Boundaries Saturday, March 28: 10 a.m. – Noon Church of the Resurrection, Amadeo Room (faces Old Columbia Pike), Burtonsville, MD

All are invited to learn and share conversation about significant community outreach ministries at Church of the Resurrection, St. John the Baptist, and St. Camillus parishes. Parish representatives will explain how Jesus’ call to live the Gospel inspired efforts that witness to God’s love beyond immediate church membership. Particular focus will be on the far-reaching food pantry operation at St. Camillus, Church of the Resurrection’s highly successful homeless ministry, and a dynamic partnership between St. John the Baptist and St. Pierre’s in Baradères, Haiti.

Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. And look out for another’s interests, not just your own. -- Philippians 2:3-4

About the Living the Gospel Series This series of retreats, workshops and discussions brings the Gospel to bear on our daily lives. Using the teachings of Jesus, we personally and collectively ground ourselves in God, becoming more open to the ways God’s love can transform us. This year the series examines how Gospel teaching informs topics such as immigration, church and politics, service to all God’s people, and the papacy of Pope Francis. The series is based in the belief that living the contemplative dimension of the Gospel deepens understanding of what it means to be God’s light to the world. Led by staff and parishioners, except where noted.

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

presuppositions that we inherit in language and culture, not only the accepted understanding of physical reality or cosmology, not only the officially sanctioned religious beliefs and norms of the community, but also the ideological distortions of our sense of reality as a whole

that shape unconsciously” our perception of reality. Our desires, for instance, shape how we know reality. A man said to his parish priest, “My dog died yesterday, Father. Could you offer a Mass for the repose of his soul?” The priest was outraged. “We don’t offer Masses for animals here,” he said sharply. “You might try the new denomination down the road. They’ll probably pray for your dog.” “I really loved that little fellow,” said the man,

“and I’d like to give him a decent send-off. I don’t know what it is customary to offer on such occasions, but do you think five hundred thousand dollars would do?” “Now wait a minute,” said the priest. “You never told me your dog was a Catholic!”

Truth costs your attachments; and these are often, if not always, ideological. Knowing the real necessitates letting go of what we think is real. Our ideas about reality are not reality. So, to know truth we have to drop our ideas, and, especially, our systems of ideas that make up ideologies. Ideology is just one fragment of our internal dialogue, our self-talk. Self-talk is mental identification with our thoughts, feelings, and stories – it is who I believe I am. Our problems are almost always about our near-total identification with self-talk. Most of our interactions with reality – people, nature, the objects and experiences in our personal orbit – are filtered through self-talk. We are relating to our mental screen of concepts about someone instead of to the real person before us. This interior thinking syndrome acts as a mental screen on reality, which prevents us from knowing the truth.

Richard Rohr writes, “The only real way to find objectivity today was to help people clarify and heal their subjectivity!” We are in touch with reality and more aware of the truth when we, first, examine our own presuppositions. We have a lot of blinders on, keeping us from seeing reality; our self-talk filters out truth. Becoming aware of our mental filters is the first step to knowing the truth.

If you ever have any comments regarding Mystical Word, you are most welcome to contact L. J. Milone.

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the name of the shop: THE TRUTH SHOP. The saleswoman was very polite: What type of truth did I wish to purchase, partial or whole? The whole truth, of course. No deceptions for me, no defenses, no rationalizations. I wanted my truth plain and unadulterated. She waved me on to another side of the store. The salesman there pointed to the price tag. “The price is very high, sir,” he said. “What is it?” I asked, determined to get the whole truth, no matter what it cost. “Your security, sir,” he answered. I came away with a heavy heart. I still need the safety of my unquestioned beliefs.

This week we begin a series on truth. Whom do we trust? We have so much information coming our way through newspapers, magazines, television, and the internet, how do we sort it all out? Who is telling the truth? Is someone just giving us their opinion, a perspective, or the facts? We are in a time that prefers unquestioned beliefs to the truth. Ideology drowns out truth. In this confusing time, what is truth? And, how do we even know what is true?

The Gospel today is the revelatory story of the Transfiguration. Peter, James, and John get a full-tilt vision of reality as it really is. They get the truth of who Jesus is when he is transformed into divine light. They even hear God, speaking from a cloud, affirming Jesus as the delight of the divine and that we should, “Listen to him.” Jesus, in other words, is giving us the truth.

To understand this heavenly episode we need to know some context. Transfiguration occurs after Jesus predicts his death, Peter tries to stop it, Jesus rebukes him, then calls all followers to deny themselves and lose their lives. We must set aside our own opinions and listen to Jesus, to what he says to do in order to know the truth. He tells us to detach from ourselves.

Truth, classically defined, is when the mind corresponds with reality. But the mind will never correspond with reality as long as it remains chained to its assumptions, expectations, ideologies, and desires. A biblical scholar and religious sister named Sandra Schneider writes, “There is no such thing as presuppositionless understanding. It is not only the

Contemplative Space

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. – Matthew 11:28 – 29 Jesus would often withdraw into a deserted place to commune with God in silence. For Lent, we offer opportunities to join Jesus in contemplative silence. Contemplative space is a time of silence and stillness set aside for meditation and contemplation. Come to the church any of the times listed below to pray in silence. Stay the whole time or for as long as you want. Mondays: 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Tuesdays: 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Wednesdays: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. & 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. — Starts March 9; Ends April 1; in the Church

Learning is fun at SJB in 1st and 2nd grade. Our 1st grade students have been learning about timelines in social studies. Students worked with timelines to connect important dates to events that happened in the past. After learning about how a timeline is created, the class practiced by drawing a mini-timeline based on their life and filling in dates that went with important events. The 2nd grade also did some digging into the past by working on biographies. Learning about prominent African Americans during Black History Month has been a wonderful learning experience. Each student gathered facts about a historical figure. Over the morning announcements, students took turns giving clues to the student body about who they researched. Next up is another round of "Who Am I?" with iconic women in honor of Women's History Month.
