A Fairy Tale “Pop-Up” MuseumIn 1885, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen be-came the first production automobile. The entire history of the automobile spans only 134 years since then. Compare that abbrevi-ated period of time with the millennia that we have been collecting art, architecture, furni-ture and jewelry.

At a concours, take a moment to reflect on the technological evolution that is on display before your eyes. Automobiles went from having central tillers and transmission brakes to today’s complicated dashboards and switch-filled steering wheels.

It’s easy to take these things for granted. But you shouldn’t. Let your time at a concours be an opportunity to reflect on progress. Think of the thousands of engineers and designers who spent their lives improving the cars we use on a daily basis.

A concours is like a fairy-tale “pop-up” museum, and this guide, our sixth, is an introduc-tion to the many instant one-day automotive museums that you will find around the country.

As you walk the field, allow yourselves to take a step back and appreciate just how far the automobile has come, in such a very short time.

There will be representatives from SCM and ACC at nearly every event. Introduce your-selves; they are there to help you make the most of your concours day. — Keith Martin, Publisher, Sports Car Market ■

Why Show at a Concours? You’ll meet great people — fellow owners and enthusiasts. You’ll probably learn something new, tooBy simon Kidston

ready to drive or show.” We’ve all read the familiar sales patter, but an outsider would probably ask themselves what it actually meant. Aren’t cars built for driving? Well, yes, or at least they used to be. But times have changed, just as the buyers, and the prices they pay, have evolved out of all recognition.

Imagine telling the salesman at your local Ferrari or Mercedes-Benz dealer back in 1955 that you didn’t actually intend to drive the car, just to mothball it, trailer it to events and hope that one day it would turn out to be “a good investment.” Sad or foresight?

Probably both. People who buy cars to squirrel away for largely financial gain, or show them off in the hope of enhancing their value with trophies, aren’t the playboys of auction catalog legend or ideal dinner-party neighbors, but we all love buying cars from them. “Mint and boxed,” as the expression goes, “delivery mileage” and “concours condition” are all code for “expensive” when the time comes to turn the car into cash.

Pampered and polishedThe concours d’elegance presents

an interesting dynamic. Owners — predominantly white, male and middle-aged — will usually employ a transport firm to deliver their pride and joy, polished to within an inch of its life, directly to the show field. If the owner drives himself, it won’t be very far or in adverse conditions.

If you think pedigree show dogs are pampered, look how many handlers surround a zillion-dollar concours entrant (car and owner). Once unloaded, there’s more polishing, straightening of wheels, laying out of books (unread) and tools (unused), and finally setting up of deckchairs for the owner to relax upon as he watches other people watching his car. Freud would have a field day.

What’s it all for? Does it have to have a practical purpose anyway? Hell no, but if you’re asking, camaraderie, curiosity, self-fulfillment, nostalgia, gratitude (to your restorer) and ego, at least speaking personally. You’ll meet great people — fellow or previous owners, historians,

Getting to the awards podium can be a tension-filled exercise, then it becomes a blur...

journalists and just good old-fashioned enthusiasts — as they stroll over to ask about your car, which in itself is flattering. You’ll probably learn something new, too.Show time

Of course, if you’re really lucky, at the end of the day someone wearing a blazer will call your name out with instructions to “be ready.”

This usually means hoping your car really will start, fluffing it the first time because of butterflies, finding a last-minute passenger if you hadn’t brought one, and endless waiting before they’re actually ready with your prize. While you’re waiting, your water-temperature gauge climbs inexorably toward the red, your co-driver sits blissfully unaware, and the crowd closes in to take endless cellphone photos like a slow-motion rally stage.

Finally, the “Go!” signal. Drive onto ramp, try to listen as the emcee tells the public who you are and what you’re driving, smile, receive trophy from pretty hostess or Mr. Blazer, and then hand to passenger before driving off ramp without running anyone over. Back to your spot on the grass and look for your restorer to buy him a drink. Or in my case, stop the engine to chat to the emcee, fail to restart it and get pushed off. “Wally,” we say in England.Primed presentation

What tips can I give you? As a judge at Pebble Beach and the Cartier Concours in India, I’d recommend being able to give a polished 60-second summary of your car’s history and restoration to the judging team. They normally have 10–15 minutes to inspect each car, so time is precious.

Prepare a file with period documents such as the original sales invoice, a chronology of owners, any races and especially proof that any unusual features are original. Books and tools count in some concours, but not all: The Ferrari crowd tends to value them more highly than others, to the extent that you can actually rent them. I’ve watched the same tool set being passed down a row of cars being judged...

Remember that this is your car’s Big Day. Everything has to be right, as you won’t get a second chance here. Condition

is usually the biggest points-scorer, followed by style and history.

As we can’t all own Bugatti Atlantics, make sure your challenger is at least spotlessly clean above and beneath, and that everything, down to the clock and radio, works. Driving it to the show (that doesn’t mean from the gate) may earn you extra points in the event of a tie.

And even if you are bringing a unicorn, try to show it yourself. Judges appreciate owners who participate rather than sending “their man.”

As emcee at Villa d’Este, I’d add that a few bullet points for the presenter are always useful: Anecdotes work better than geeky tech details, especially if they’re funny.

That leads to my last point. Choose a car that has a story, always prioritize long-term originality (including colors) over a short-term trophy, and above all, don’t stress. There’s always another concours. ■

the Pebble Beach Concours shifted its focus to collector cars in 1955 — and other concours followed suit. It has also taken the lead by including racing greats and offering featured marques and special classes as early as 1953, introducing displays of dream cars and concepts in the 1980s, and instituting driving events and emphasizing the importance of preservation in the 1990s. Guided by — and often driving — the interests of enthusiasts the world over, this concours continues to set the bar for all others.
