Happy New Year Everyone! It is 2020 now th

and 20 Anniversary of Red River Region

has now passed (and we can now look th

forward to our 25 !). I think we had an

excellent year in Red River Region (but

I'm a bit biased as you would expect) with

many major events and activities taking th

place. One of our major events for our 20 ,

as everyone knows, was the June trip to the

Rockies (thanks to Dennis and Bev Duncan) where we had

40 cars and lots of driving to Invermere and around the area,

including Banff and some spectacular driving and scenery. In

fact, this event was such a success that we are doing it again

in June 2020, only on a much smaller scale, and inviting just

Red River Region members (if you are interested please

contact Dennis Duncan ASAP as there are limited spaces). thAlso, our 20 anniversary year featured the Concours at the

Gates (again thanks Dennis and Bev) in September with 50

cars registered, our largest Concours to date. A great time

was had by all with a great meal as well! The competition

was fierce and there were a few disappointed people (“darn, I

thought I just might get a trophy this time” says Gord as he

pouts a bit). We also had our fourth annual Garage Tour in

September with over 35 cars (thanks Dallas Ewen) which I

believe was our biggest ever as well. The year's final event

was our Holiday Party at the Manitoba Club in November,

with around 90 people in attendance (close to the biggest

ever turnout for this event). As you can see there is a theme

to these events in that we had some of the biggest turnouts in thRed River's history, all to celebrate our 20 anniversary!

Last time I wrote about ways we can maintain our car enthusiasm over the long winter months. I’d mentioned indoor karting, slot-car racing, and scale models. Well, there was one thing I missed, and I think it’s fun enough to merit a mention in this column.

Boardgames! and in particular, a racing boardgame called Formula De (pronounced “day”). Formula De (the “De” stands for “dice”) is a fun Formula One-style game where players guide their cars around racetrack boards made to replicate real racetracks around the world. Dice are used to determine the number of spaces travelled in a turn - all the way from 4-sided to 30-sided (!). But like real racing, you can’t just go flying through the corners - cars must end their turn within the corner spaces or crash! It requires some clever planning and a bit of luck to navigate the track, as well as strategic use of engine overrev and tires to save yourself from the inevitable miscalculations or bad luck.

There’s another fun component to Formula De as well - making the playing pieces! While the game comes with generic looking plastic cars, miniatures companies make realistic looking scale Formula One cars that can be painted in the iconic liveries of your favourite teams. For Christmas I got a new set of metal cars and I’ve been hard at work painting them as the teams from the 1992 Formula One season. Will Mansell steamroll all comers in his Williams FW14B, or can Alboreto steal victory in the Footwork Arrows FA13? We have all winter to find out!

Behind the Scenesby Kevin Mazur, photos by Lenssen Photo and Nick Busato

Over the past 22 months I have had the humbling opportunity to work with customer teams of Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) at varying levels throughout Canada and the United States. When you are consistently surrounded by superstar drivers and the spaceships that are modern racecars, it is easy to become complacent and lose sight of the excitement and rarity of your surroundings. I am a recent alumnus of the University of Manitoba, graduating with my B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering this past June. As with any self-respecting car nut, my passion for anything with wheels started at a very young age. I distinctly remember waiting to pick up my older sister from kindergarten in my mom's car and passing the time by naming the make and model of every vehicle driving by. Naturally I was smitten with the poster cars of the late 90's and early 2000's: Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Aston Martins etc. Those cars were easy to fall in-love with, with their flashy colours, exotic V12 engines and edgy designs. On the other hand, there was Porsche with their 911. I had always heard about how incredible their vehicles were and it seemed the brand had a cult-like following. I was still skeptical about Porsches though; how could a flat-six rear-engine car ever live up to the hype?

That series was and currently is still run by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). The position was my first experience working in a racing series run by a professional organization. I was still able to live in Winnipeg while working with Speedstar, as I was only required to be present while the car was running on-track during race events and tests. After my first weekend working with a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, I was instantly sold on the Porsche brand and how incredible their vehicles are.

The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars are relatively stock vehicles with minimal adjustments available to teams in search of performance gains. Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) takes a significant amount of pride in the services that they provide at the track during race weekends. There was always at least one customer support specialist present at each event to offer advice and diagnose any electronic or engine issues that could not be solved by customers. The series is more focused on driver development, so when combined with the support from PMNA, it was a perfect level for me to gain my initial experience in the professional racing world. Due to the Cup series not having professional drivers, we were often support races for top-tier classes of racing including Formula One in Montreal and IndyCar in Toronto.

Page 5: Racing: An Insider’s View Concours d’Elegance …...Racing: An Insider’s View Concours d’Elegance Holiday Party Report Happy New Year Everyone! It is 2020 now and 20th Anniversary

5

At these races, we would share pit lane space with the top-level teams and have access to spaces and equipment not commonly accessible to the general public. We were even able to use Ferrari's pit wall stand to monitor timing and scoring during our event at the Montréal Grand Prix.

Thankfully I had attended a few events as a spectator prior to working in the racing world, or else the sensory overload of being at the track would have been a massive distraction. In order to succeed in racing, you must be competent at controlling your emotions and maintaining focus. This is no easy task given the near-constant roar and scream of engines that only subside during scheduled lunch breaks for track and safety personnel. Race team members are often unanimous in their agreement that the best sound of every race weekend is the rear gate of the race transport trailer closing after packing up.

After a whirlwind first season working in professional motorsports, I secured a position as a Data Analyst with the Pfaff Motorsports team, competing with a brand-new Porsche 911 GT3 R in the GTD class of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship for the 2019 season. I was further exposed to the pride and professionalism of PMNA customer support at the beginning of December 2018.

The generation of 911 GT3 R that we were to compete with was brand new and we had not yet received our car from Germany. PMNA hosted an instructional day at Daytona with the first chassis to land in North America so customer teams competing in the upcoming Rolex 24 at Daytona could become acquainted with the car. The support from PMNA did not stop there. Every time that our car was running on track during official IMSA series events, at least one PMNA representative would sit with us behind our pit box timing stand. Their role was to supply an additional set of eyes monitoring the telemetry feed of live data from the car and provide instantaneous troubleshooting aid if any problems arose with electronic components which customers do not have access to modify. After each on-track session, a PMNA customer support specialist would obtain a copy of the data from the car to review for themselves. A second PMNA employee who acted as an engineering adviser would then join our engineering team and drivers for our debriefs, providing advice and input on recommended vehicle setup evolutions.

Page 6: Racing: An Insider’s View Concours d’Elegance …...Racing: An Insider’s View Concours d’Elegance Holiday Party Report Happy New Year Everyone! It is 2020 now and 20th Anniversary

6

My role of working as a Data Analyst enabled me to gain insight in the racing world from nearly every possible angle. During on-track sessions I was responsible for monitoring the live telemetry data feed from the car and verifying fuel usage calculations. After each session, I would partake in the driver debriefs, create data reports for drivers and refine sensor calibrations loaded to the data-logging system in the car. These simple responsibilities led me to close working relationships with PMNA customer support engineers and well-known Porsche drivers. One such driver, Lars Kern, is Porsche's go-to expert for crushing Nürburgring track records with the machinery from Weissach. Lars was one of our endurance drivers, joining the Pfaff Motorsports team in January, March, June and October. It was an incredible opportunity to work with him and get to know him on a personal basis. Professional drivers have personal lives too and many, including Lars, are married and have children. Like other celebrities, often these drivers are only known for their on-track exploits and we tend to forget that they have lives away from the track too. As you can imagine, getting to know a Porsche test driver led to the sharing of some tantalizing stories and information that never made official news releases.

Page 7: Racing: An Insider’s View Concours d’Elegance …...Racing: An Insider’s View Concours d’Elegance Holiday Party Report Happy New Year Everyone! It is 2020 now and 20th Anniversary

7

One would assume that a manufacturer such as Porsche would develop a perfectly reliable race vehicle prior to releasing it for customers to compete with. This is a very difficult deliverable to achieve because of the global use of their competition vehicles, and the wide variety of track surfaces and layouts around the world. Once again, Porsche is at the forefront of supporting their customer racing teams, providing free updated parts to replace designs that have been found to fail in newly discovered circumstances. Updates were provided to the team multiple times a month during the 2019 season. The number and frequency of updates are proof that Porsche is committed to ensuring the success of their global customer teams.

One significant thing that I learned about endurance racing was the importance of saving fuel as a strategy to gain track position. In the top classes of GT racing, driver talent is nearly equivalent. Unless there is a biased performance advantage given to a certain manufacturer or track conditions are other than dry, it is very difficult for drivers to pass for position or build significant leads. When drivers save fuel while following a car for position on track, less fuel is required during the next pit stop. This equates to a shorter fill time and increased likelihood of passing your competitors in pit lane.

There is a running joke that working in racing is much like working in a traveling circus. Teams roll into town in a convoy of transporters, put up their tents, bring out their toys to put on a show, then pack it all up and move on to the next town just to do it all over again. Friends, family and fans alike often express their jealousy of my working in such an exciting industry, but I learned very quickly that working in the racing world is not for everyone. The first race weekend that I worked with the Speedstar Motorsport team was in Sebring, FL. We had an early start on our first day, arriving at the track by 6:30am, followed by a full day of on-track sessions while simultaneously setting up our paddock area, which resulted in not leaving the track until 3am the next morning. That was our first day of the race weekend and there were still 3 more to follow. An additional example is how the infamous 24 hours of Daytona is more like the 36 hours of Daytona for any crew members involved. The race starts at 2:35pm on Saturday, but team personnel arrive at the track that same morning around 6:30am. Once the race is finished on Sunday, pitlane and garage setups need to be torn down and packed into the race transporter, which is required to be completed by 6:30pm on Sunday. I have spoken to a few fans who do not believe that crew members stay awake for the entirety of the 24-hour race. I can assure you that at a minimum, all engineering and strategy staff are awake for the whole race.

Unfortunately, my time working with Porsches in a racing capacity has been paused for now. I was recently offered a position with an IndyCar team and could not refuse the opportunity to expand my experience and knowledge. My exposure to the Porsche brand and culture through the company's motorsport division made it evident that Porsche is the leader in developing quality vehicles, whether they are destined for the racing or the general consumer.

Our Holiday Banquet this year was an especially significant event, as 2019 marked our club's 20th anniversary! What better place to spend our evening celebrating the holidays, than the Manitoba Club. The staircase to the dining room was adorned with pine boughs and white lights, giving it a magical holiday sensation. Nearly 100 guests enjoyed an elegant dinner in the magnificent club dining room, sheathed with panels of stained oak.

The food, as usual, was of the highest quality and flavor, and prepared with artful precision. The Manitoba Club put together a three course meal that was amazing. Choices included Filet Mignon with Shiitake Mushrooms and Green Peppercorn Sauce, Atlantic Salmon with Pesto and Orange Saffron Fennel Sauce, Chorizo & Manchego Stuffed Chicken Supreme with Smoked Red Pepper Sauce, and Spinach & Goat Cheese Strudel with Tomato Ragu and Steamed Vegetables.

Our major draw prize this year was an all-expenses paid trip to the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta including airfare for two and a night’s hotel accommodation, won by Gale and Murray Enns. The Porsche Experience Center Atlanta is a $100 million, 27.7-acre complex featuring a 1.6 mile track for driving instruction. We raised a record amount of money selling draw tickets at the dinner, with all proceeds being donated to Art Space. The prize was donated by Porsche Centre Winnipeg, whom we wish to thank for this very generous donation. Next time you are at the dealership getting your car serviced (or buying a new one), please take the time to personally thank Anderson Le for his dealership's generosity.

Porsche Centre Winnipeg staff also attended our dinner, bringing with them a copious amount of Porsche coffee mugs, key lanyards and posters, which were given away to guests throughout the evening.

After dinner, we were entertained by the Luminous String Quartet, which played a variety of music including traditional classical, Broadway musicals, jazz, and even the Hockey Night in Canada theme.

The Club paid a special tribute to one of its founding members, Malcolm Hinds. Malcolm started our club in November 1999, and had kept every single piece of paper related to its founding, which he presented to President Gord Favelle. Throughout the years, due largely to the unwavering dedication of Malcolm, our club grew from 25 initial member to over 250 members. Many of our current club members were personally recruited by Malcolm. Standing on the shoulders of our founding members, our club continues to provide its members with interesting and innovative events, while respecting the tradition and prestige of the Porsche brand. We thank Malcolm for all he has done for our club.Members wishing to obtain photos from the Holiday Party

Concours d’Elegance

The fourth Red River Region Concours d'Elegance was held on thSunday Sept. 8 at the Gates on Roblin. Concours judging began

at 3:00 p.m. and was completed by 5:00 p.m. A record number of cars were entered in Concours this year (50) with a total of 89 club members attending the formal sit-down dinner. We were once again blessed with a beautiful autumn day with clear blue skies and a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius.

14

15

Registering 50 cars for the Concours was no easy task but thanks to the great teamwork of Helmut and Gwen Waedt, the Concours registration and check-in went off without a hitch.

Judges for this year's Concours were long-time Red River Region club member Jim Drummond and Paul (Willy) Williamson, columnist with the Winnipeg Free Press and author of the popular “Willy's Garage” column. The cars entered at Concours were divided into six categories: Air-cooled, 996/997, 991/992, Boxster/Cayman, Four-door, and Front-engine. A “People's Choice” award would also be given to the car voted best in show by attendees. Although the judging at the Concours was not as detailed as it is at Porsche Parade, it still proved to be a difficult task for the judges as every car entered in the competition was immaculate and in mint condition.

Cooperation from “Mother Nature” allowed for an afternoon of admiring beautiful Porsches, visiting with old friends and the making of new friends as we had a large number of new members attending Concours this year.

After an afternoon of viewing beautiful Porsches the Concours attendees proceeded to the Gates Ballroom where they enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a formal sit-down dinner. In attendance at Concours this year was our PCA Zone 10 representative Julie Bailey. Julie briefly addressed the room with well wishes and congratulated the Red River Region on its accomplishments over the past 20 years. Also in attendance at the Concours were two founding Red River executive members Gordon Luy and Malcolm Hinds.

Porsche and Lucasfilm Unveil New Star Wars Starship Design After six weeks of collaboration, a team of Lucasfilm and Porsche designers unveiled a new Star Wars spaceship, the Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter, which combines elements from the Porsche Taycan EV sedan and 911 sports car with traditional spaceship design language from the Star Wars cinematic universe.

“The basic shape of the cabin, which tapers towards the rear, and a highly distinctive topography from the cockpit flyline to the turbines establish visual parallels with the iconic design of the 911 and the Taycan,” says Vice President of Porsche Style Michael Mauer. Though we think it's a stretch to say the Tri-Wing resembles anything Porsche has made in the past, it is low, wide, and looks faster than most other Star Wars starfighters — perhaps with the exception of the J-type 327 Naboo Royal Starship that served as Queen Amidala's transportation in The Phantom Menace.

Though the shape of the ship looks more Star Wars than Porsche, there are select design elements that seem to have come straight from two Porsche cars: The center taillights from the 992-generation 911 appear in two separate locations at the rear, the 992's grille is located behind the droid, and the Taycan's four-point headlights are mounted up from between two laser cannons. Another interesting point made in the video is that in the course of the initial design sketches, the team found that the closer to the center the engines were mounted, the sportier the ship looked.

Inside, the pilot sits in the center of the cockpit, with two passenger seats behind and to the left and right, much like a McLaren F1. Porsche notes that the instrument cluster is located directly in front of the pilot, just like in a Porsche.

On , a video that documents The Designer Alliance websitethe design process from start to finish cites the X-Wing, Y-Wing, and U-Wing starfighters from previous Star Wars films as inspirational starting points for the new Tri-Wing.

“This collaboration is an amazing opportunity to merge the design aesthetics of Porsche and Star Wars. I found it to be creatively challenging and extremely inspiring,” says Doug Chiang, Vice President and Executive Creative Director for Lucasfilm.

Those who are lucky enough to attend the premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in Los Angeles in December will be treated to a five-foot-long scaled model of the Tri-Wing.
