T ractors are the backbone of most prairie farming operations. All of the manufacturers have deliv-ered new products in the recent past, so this season’s Techs & Specs features more new models
than ever before. In part this has been driven by producer demand for new technology in guidance and implement operation and in part it is due to the need to be in compliance with the evolving engine exhaust emissions standards. From a manufacturer’s point of view, higher commodity prices have improved the producer’s ability to pay for both and as a result many features that might have lan-guished on engineers’ drawing boards have rapidly appeared in these new machines.
The technology that is improving emissions has also delivered improved fuel and diesel exhaust fluid economy, and while not fully offsetting the increase in price related to meeting the EPA Tier 4 interim and final standards, it has softened the blow. With each rise in diesel price the savings with the new technologies is magnified, so the new machines improve the bottom line on the farms’ balance sheets with every acre and hour.
Engineers have been using the latest in computer-assisted design, and in many cases 3D imaging, to produce these new units. The idea that more power, bigger hydraulic flows, improved lighting and guidance systems allow farmers to cover more acres in a day works in theory, provided the operator can sit in the seat that long. But if the cabs’ environments leave the operators fatigued it is hard to get the most out of these large farm investments.
Every aspect of cab comfort and safety is being analyzed in the development of these new field tools. There is technology being adopted from military systems that keep pilots and soldiers strapped into their seats for long hours of intense concentration. Heating and cooling systems are examined using 3D models. CAD programs that integrate simulated humans from five feet and 100 pounds to the biggest of farmer frames are mocked up and run through the their full ranges of motions to ensure the systems work for all.
While prices for these new tools seem substantial, farmers are likely getting more for their dollars than they were a few years ago.

5maintenance costs,” Huber said.
Power generated either from a p.t.o. mounted generator, which is the STW solution, or from more common flywheel mounted generators provides energy through cables to electric motors that drive a variety of functions on equipment.
Deutz-Fahr plans to power balers and other tools with electricity.
Age Krug of Agco Challenger in the Netherlands said his company’s prototype Electrogator, a diesel-over-electric sprayer with electrically powered wheel motors, is destined for production in coming years.
“It is about efficiency and precision,” Krug said.
“We were able to control wheel spin and improve ground contact, use less fuel and improve our application procedures. Our new non-electric sprayer in Europe benefited from what we have seen from the prototype
about wheel spin.”Much of the efficiency is created by the
ability to disconnect machinery from the engine and run the various components at ideal speeds or selectively shut off systems when they are parasitic on the machine.
A fertilizer spreader from Rauch operates its spinners with electric motors, providing variable rate applications and shut offs for an entire side at field edges and overlaps.
Electric motors have other benefits as well.
High torque motors don’t give up power as readily as other drives, can increase and decrease speed more rapidly and are able to compensate for changes in ground speed independently from the motion of the machine.
When Agco debuted its Electrogator sprayer at Ag Connect in Orlando, Florida, last year, it predicted that its new large-square baling system that trailed its combines would eventually be electrically driven rather than depending on long hydraulic feeds from the combine.
Rigitrac offers an electrically driven tractor capable of precision operating speeds and up to 15 percent fuel savings. It won an innovations award at this year’s Agritechnica for the machine.
Marlin One, a senior standards engineer with John Deere, said electric systems aren’t new to agriculture but failed to catch on in an era of low fuel prices and plentiful machinery mechanics.
The Farmall 450 of the 1950s had an IH Electrall option that used an engine-mounted generator that fed motors on farm implements.
Deere now makes a 7530 E in North America and a 6030 in Europe. Electricity

LEFT: The Deutz ZF-Terra+ tractor drew crowds at Agritechnica. The electrical generation on the machine makes power for accessory drives and for machinery operation. Savings up to 10 percent are possible, says Deutz.
TOP: Those aren’t hydraulic valves, they’re for electrically driven implements.

is generated from the crankshaft with an electrically driven cooling system, air conditioning and air brake compressors and power for farm implements. It can also connect to a 110 volt power system so it can act as a emergency or mobile farm power supply.
First at Agritechnica two years ago, Belarus introduced its 3023 tractor with an electrically driven front p.t.o.
The Deutz ZT-Terra+ tractor can add wheel motors to implements to boost stop and start loads as well as p.t.o. driven processes, which reduces engine load when it is least efficient.
The company said the strategy improves fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent. As well, using electric motors in place of crankshaft driven tractor auxiliaries such as cooling and other pumping can produce savings of five percent.
In a recent American Society of Agricultural and Biotechnological Engineers Association publication, the Deere tractor was shown to be 13.8 percent more fuel efficient running a power harrow and 9.3 percent better when pulling a trailer than its 7530 all-diesel sister machine.
Germany’s DLG, which organizes Agritechnica, also tests farm equipment. It found the electrical machine was five percent more efficient.
Huber said the generators will become larger and controllers more sophisticated. However, most of the technology transition will take place with the introduction of implements that can use the new energy source.
“You will still have your p.t.o. and hydraulics, but you will also have some large electrical connectors as well,” he said. ■
HANOVER, Germany — Electricity is coming to a field near you, but it won’t need a mile of extension cord.
The only power on a tractor has traditionally been the 12 volts coming off the alternator.
However, new machinery designs are turning to electricity to deliver energy to operations once the mandate of hydraulics, power take-offs, ground drives and accessory drives.
“Mechanical drives aren’t very
efficient,” said Ulrich Huber of electrical technology company STW. “They are poor at transferring power from one place to another once it is made.”
Huber’s German company brought a 140 kilowatt generator mounted to a Fendt tractor to Germany’s recent Agritechnica farm show in Hanover to show off what it could do with electricity to replace typical p.t.o. and hydraulic systems.
“This is nothing new for mining or other industries, only in agriculture have we
avoided it, until now,” he said.“It is a better way to deliver power: more
efficient and well proven.”STW was not alone in showing off its
diesel engine powered, electric-hybrid tractor.
Deere, Deutz, Rigitrac, Agco and Belarus also brought electrical solutions to Agritechnica. They say it is more than a passing fad.
“It’s a trend that goes hand in glove with precision agriculture, rising fuel prices and

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — John Deere’s solution to emissions involves a solution of urea.
Geoff Stigler of John Deere announced his company’s EPA Tier 4 final emissions solution during the Commodity Classic farm show in Nashville.
For the larger diesels, the company will combine its current-cooled exhaust gas recirculation and filtration with selective catalytic reduction by introducing diesel exhaust fluid to the exhaust stream.
Deere was the last of the big three implement manufacturers to confirm its plans for high horsepower agricultural and industrial engines.
Agco announced at the Agritechnica show in Germany last fall that its Finnish made Sisu engines, which are found in larger tractors and combines, would be using a limited amount of cooled exhaust gas recirculation to meet the Tier 4
final, European Union Stage 4 final standards. In Nashville, Bill Preller, director of
specialty business for Case IH, said his company plans to tweak its SCR system to meet the regulations.
“We don’t plan to add filtration,” he said.
“Our relationship with (Fiat Powertrain Technologies) and the engines that we are using now to meet Tier 4 requirements will meet the 2014 requirements with just a little more work.”
Deere’s system will be based on the Powertech engine platform that meets the Tier 4 Interim, EU Stage 3B regulations.
The larger engines will use the current EGR system with a diesel oxidation catalyst, a diesel particulate filter and a SCR system.
The company said the engines will run higher fuel injection pressure to obtain better quality
fuel atomization and combustion in the cylinders.
Stigler says the engines will be running higher fuel injection pressure to obtain a better quality fuel atomization and combustion in the
cylinders.“We feel our approach will let
us use less diesel exhaust fluid than
the competition to meet the regulations. That means our tanks can be smaller. They will need filling less often and it will mean we should have longer service intervals on our DEF filters,” Stigler said.
“We are taking the approach that this will be about total fluid efficiency, not just fuel, but the whole package.”
The company said it learned a lot from the highway truck industry, which has had to conform to the new rules ahead of the off-road business.
Deere, along with the other manufacturers, will keep building Tier 2 and 3 powered machinery for India, China, Africa and South America, where emission rules don’t apply.
Stigler said there will likely be a cost associated with meeting the final emissions standard, but it would be competitive with other farm machinery companies.
The new engines will be rated for biodiesel blends up to B20.
The first of the Tier 4 final, ultra low emissions engines will be included in farm equipment in mid-2013 and 2014. ■

Doug Chorney pre-booked his spring fertilizer but didn’t lock in a price because he thought it was too high at the time.
Last week he got a call from his anhydrous ammonia supplier.
“They thought this was the time to price it,” said the farmer from East Selkirk, Man.
Chorney locked in a price of $1,050 per tonne delivered to the farm, which is down from $1,100 before Christmas.
“Although I’m not thrilled with that price, it is a little better,” he said.
David Asbridge, president of NPK Fertilizer Advisory Service, thinks Chorney made a prudent decision.
“We think we’re probably pretty close to the bottom of these markets,” said the U.S. analyst.
The average wholesale price for urea in the U.S. Midwest for the first half of February was $440 per short ton, which is up slightly from a year ago but down sharply from the aver-age of $537 in September 2011.
Asbridge believes the freefall is nearly over and prices will start head-ing back up in the next two to four weeks as spring approaches.
“(Farmers) probably should go ahead and start thinking about buy-ing some of their fertilizer.”

Food imports face far less rigorous inspection than Canadian food exports and the result is a Canadian population at risk, says the president of the union representing federal food inspectors.
Bob Kingston, president of the agri-culture union of the Public Service Alli-ance of Canada, also accused a senior
Canadian Food Inspection Agency official Feb. 15 of misleading MPs about the level of import inspection.
Two days earlier, CFIA associate vice-president Paul Mayers told MPs that there is a common perception that imports are not as thoroughly inspected as exports or products destined for the Canadian market.
“First, let me assure the committee that there is only one set of rules,” he said Feb. 13.
“Those rules apply to imports the same way they apply to products mov-ing domestically. Indeed in the context of products that are exported, if there are additional considerations, those are not CFIA requirements.”
Kingston said that is not true.“I hate to say this, but you’ve been
seriously misinformed on a number of very important issues,” he told MPs.
