Bart Messing, the executive chef at Woodfield Country Club, came away with top honors at the recent Third Annual Country Club Chef Showdown, an event benefitting Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation.

The areas’ top country club chefs went knife-to-knife in the contest using the same main ingredient in each recipe: the Sunchoke.

Messing won the event with a creative medley titled “The Sunchoke Trio,” which was comprised of Sunchoke & Wild Mushroom Pave, Diver Scallop & Sunchoke Puree, and Sunchoke Gnocchi.

“It was a lot of fun coming up with creative recipes using this root vegetable,” said Messing. “Basically, we created three separate appetizers which appealed to the judges. Each chef prepared outstanding recipes and we all look forward to next year’s event.”

The event also had a time element in that the chefs had just 30 minutes to prepare their dishes for the judges.“It was an exciting evening and all of the chefs had a good time exchanging recipes and ideas for how to improve

the dining experiences at our respective clubs,” added Messing. “But more important was being able to participate in an event that raised funds for such an important organization – Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation.”

The premier chef tasting event also included: Glenn Matusik, Delaire Country Club who prepared Spinalis Steak with Sunchoke Gnocchi and Horseradish Foam; Steve Nardiello, Gleneagles Country Club who made Braised Veal Cheek and Sunchoke Gnocchi; and Michael Schenk, The Polo Club of Boca Raton who created Miso Hoison Glazed Chilean Sea Bass.

By Bito David Olympic Heights Community High School students are supporting childhood cancer research in a much more

unique way than donating money – they are shaving their heads.The school recently hosted their 10th annual St Baldrick’s shave-a-thon event. To participate in the head-shaving

extravaganza, students were asked to raise a minimum of $100 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The total raised by Olympic Heights this year exceeded $33,000 by more than 200 volunteers.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives.

“This is an overall great thing,” said senior Ian Wagner. “Raising money to cure childhood cancer is an extremely important cause and seeing high school students raise this much money is an outstanding thing.”

In the past 10 years, Olympic Heights have raised more than $500,000. What’s truly remarkable about that number is the fact that each event has been entirely student run under the guidance of few faculty members, organizers said.

“As a high school student, it’s such a great feeling to be able to make a difference like this,” said junior Gianna Damian. “When you walk into the gymnasium and see a sea of green shirts, wigs, headbands and shoes, you get really excited for what was accomplished. It’s important to spread the word.” See page 3

Thousands Attend 6th Annual Boating, Beach Bashfor People With Disabilities

wheelchairs, on walkers, gripping canes, led by service dogs, or holding onto the arms or hands of loved ones or caregivers.

One by one, children and adults with every conceivable disability pulled into Spanish River Park for the 6th annual Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities on Saturday.

Dubbed the “Miracle on the Intracoastal,” the Bash is the largest free, fun event in the United States for those with physical and/or intellectual challenges. For many it is their most anticipated day of the year. This year’s Bash was sponsored by Unicorn Children’s Foundation, of Boca.

“We reach out across the State of Florida and the nation to invite families

that have a loved one with a disability to enjoy a free day of picnicking, boat rides, live music, and fun and games suited to all abilities, no matter how limited they might be,” said Bash director Jay Van Vechten. “For most of our guests, it is the one event in the nation where they can fully relax and not be judged or stared at for their differences.”

For the thousands who participated in the March 24 event and for the 400 volunteers there to help them, it was one of the most memorable days of their lives.

Started in 2009, the first Bash attracted 350 participants. It has enjoyed double digit growth since then, reaching nearly 6,000 in 2013. Organizers did not have estimates on this year’s attendance at press time.

Everything was free - park admission to a hot BBQ lunch with all

the trimmings, a nonstop concert with multiple performing artists, numerous exhibits and attractions. Perhaps the highlight was the opportunity to ride on about 20 privately owned motor yachts, on loan for the day by members of Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club.

“Clearly we’ve struck a chord in the disability community,” Van Vechten said. “The thing that makes this event work is that it is totally free with no strings attached.”

Volunteer Wendy Friswell said the special needs population tends to live restricted lives and therefore the Bash was a welcome treat for them.

“Most of the folks attending the Bash are unlikely to visit the mall, the local movies or even hang out at a fast food restaurant with friends,” she said. “The majority have never been on a boat or even enjoyed a picnic in the park with their family and friends, but they get to do that each year at the Bash.”

Several attendees were impressed by the cordiality that existed.

Sharon Alexander, executive director of Unicorn Children’s Foundation, said what made the event so special was that every attendee was treated like a VIP from the moment guests arrive at the park. Volunteers greeted them upon arrival and they were there to wave goodbye as they drove away, she added.

“Even those who have no verbal skills still smile at the kindness that surrounded them at this miraculous event,” Alexander said.

One special celebrity appearance

was Chris P. Bacon, the Ocala pot-bellied pig born without the use of his back legs and uses a dog wheelchair. Accompanied by two FAU story tellers who read stories, Chris was an inspiration to many kids with disabilities.

Chris, who is approaching 2 years old, was set to be euthanized when local veterinarian Len Lucero stepped in. He saved Chris and changed the animal’s fate by making the wheelchair. He has since had four wheelchairs.

“When you look around and see so many people in wheelchairs and to see a pig sharing this experience with them, it must be an exciting time for them,” said Susie Newman, who brought her wheelchair-bound son Josh down from Jupiter. “How often do you see something like this? This is inspiring.”

Organizers hope to replicate the Bash in other communities that have direct access to yacht clubs and open water. They point to similar events that are held in Boston, Chicago Philadelphia, New Orleans, Seattle and other West Coast markets.

“We’re here to help make that happen and hope other towns will contact us for support and guidance,” Van Vechten said.

At the event, 60 students shaved their heads, including 12 female students.

Senior Elizabeth Siegel is a four-year veteran of the head-shaving process. When asked why she shaves her head, Siegel responded, “It’s really important for girls to shave their hair. It makes such an impact in these kids’ lives, and it makes them feel like they don’t have to go through it alone. They have someone who knows what

it feels like to not have any hair on their heads.”

Lauren Benedeky, a stage IV neuroblastoma survivor and St. Baldrick’s national ambassador speaking at the assembly, told the crowd that 36 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. “That is 36 families every day in turmoil and grief,” she said.

It is truly spectacular the amount of money that has been raised for this fantastic cause. This proves that at no matter what age, people can make a difference. As Elizabeth Siegel acutely expressed, “It’s only hair. It will grow back.”

A Lesson in GivingThere is a really strong presence

of genuine philanthropy in South Palm Beach County as evidenced at two activities I was privy to attend this past week in our local communities, in fact, right here in Boca Raton.

On Thursday, I attended KOP Mentoring Network’s Salute to Excellence Dinner at Bogart’s of Boca Raton and on Saturday the 6th Annual Boca Beach & Boating Bash at Spanish River Park.

For full disclosure, I am the founder of KOP Mentoring Network and I also provided some consulting to the Beach Bash.

Each year for more than 10 years, KOP Mentoring Network has honored five stellar role models as Men of Distinction around Father’s Day weekend. But this year, we altered that tradition by giving our heroes their flowers earlier - on March 20.

The intent was to showcase those who have given selflessly of themselves while reminding the community that the insight for and the creation of programs such as KOPMN, infrastructure, and improvements frequently comes

from board members and supporters such as our honoree, Burt Rapoport, who have given back for years, often over the course of many decades.

Rapoport is the well-known entrepreneur who has brought so many successful and well-loved restaurants, such as Deck 84, Henry’s and Burt and Max’s into our communities. He has danced for the George Snow Scholarship Fund, given generously of his resources and time for the education of our disadvantaged young people, and he is do doing it again as I write!

KOPMN has been providing the tutoring and mentoring needs of thousands of at-risk children since 1991. Through these efforts, children who might have ended up on the streets, on drugs or in gangs have been deterred from that fate, and instead have gone on to finish high school, enlist in the armed forces, enroll in college and many now have productive lives.

Rapoport joined us this year to bring awareness and support to this mission.

The award was not created to recognize mainstream leaders who are the bedrock in the community.

Many of them get enough attention, most of which is very well deserved.

But people like Rapoport and Jay Van Vechten, the founder and director of the Bash, tend to fly under the radar.

Van Vechten started the event, in its current form, six years ago to create a fun day or a big party for those among us with physical and/or intellectual challenges. Miracles were performed on the Intracoastal as people on wheelchairs and anyone who wished, were allowed to board any of 20 boats and take a sail down the waterway.

And Van Vechten loves a challenge. The long-time public relations guru, created what is today, undoubtedly the biggest, free, fun-day event in the nation for people with disabilities. Last year, more than 6,000 people attended and they are still trying to determine this year’s attendance.

Someone hinted to me that next year, organizers hope to have a contest where more than 250 people in wheelchairs will do the same dance for five minutes. It might be a good idea to start practicing your Electric Slide now for that contest.

The Man of the Year program is to showcase unsung heroes in the community, people who make a difference away from a bright spotlight.

Professional athletes, skiers and skaters aspire for championship rings and Olympic gold medals. Oscar dreams inspire actors, directors and others in the film industry.

But if local folks do what they do in hopes of winning a Man of the Year recognition, they probably aren’t the ideal candidates.

When the recipients were told that they are being awarded the distinction, they typically are more humbled than excited. That’s when you know someone is worthy.

And as Rapoport came forward to accept his honor recently, the sincerity and humility was quite evident.

As I shared with the audience, Rapoport is a saint on loan from heaven, and as for Van Vechten, I think then there must be a green room in heaven awaiting him.

Unveiling Your True Identity!A person, most often, develops

a relationship with another on the basis of what each knows, and comes to like, about the other. This is true in neighborhoods, at the work place, in social clubs, in religious institutions, among fellow students, and in many additional settings where people operate.

Many of these will never surpass a mere wave of the hand each time they pass one another, maybe an actual handshake, besides an occasional brief exchange of words of limited significance. Such can easily happen even among people who

had never met before, but which came to find sufficient reason to share some words based on a common experience at a particular moment.

There are others who go a bit deeper, and may even engage in conversation each time they pass each other. Perhaps a world or national event of some significance may cause comments to be made and even a dialogue to unfold.

Yet, at these two levels just described, chances are that nothing extra will occur unless there is a deliberate effort, and a corresponding response, which

enables ties to be established between two or more individuals. That may depend on how much of one’s personal identity is honestly, gradually, and mutually disclosed; when some form of trust is established among the parties!

A person’s looks, speech, and many other factors can be partially helpful, just as they can also be totally deceptive. That’s why I often recommend to individuals and audiences I address: Be sure your identity is manifested far more by who you are, rather than merely by things you possess!

It’s quite sad, albeit true, that

far too many people today prefer to operate more on the basis of appearance than reality. Many talk quite well and too much, yet never adding the ingredients that truthfully point to who they actually are as a person!

Nevertheless, you can develop a set of easy questions which can be posed to an individual you become interested in knowing better and developing mutual trust. Then, together, you can impact other lives with the values of integrity and solid attitudes you can model through all you do! In all you are and do, just be real; and make that as contagious as you can!

Need For An Enduring, Unchanging WorldviewMany universities and

corporate trainers teach business ethics from a perspective sometimes referred to as “moral relativism.” This basically means they do not believe in objective truth; to them, truth is in the eye of the beholder. As a result, according to this way of thinking, whatever an individual regards as right is good enough.

Personally, I disagree with this philosophy. If truth is something we can mold and shape according to our desires and preference, then the person that conducts business in an unscrupulous, predatory manner is as “ethical” as the individual that seeks to uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity.

The Bible describes this type of belief system when it states, “everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). Even thousands of years ago,

people rejected the existence of objective truth. This is not a “modern,” 21stcentury concept.

As an employer, even if we do not subscribe to moral relativism, it is important to remember everyone has their own worldview, and they live and act according to it.

For instance, if they are self-absorbed, they will likely make decisions and act according to what benefits them most. If they make decisions based on family values they have learned, that could be good – or it could be bad. What if you discover too late that they were raised by mobsters, swindlers or criminals? You might not like those “family values” being brought into your company!

Although you cannot change or modify the worldviews of individual employees, you can seek to clearly communicate the

“worldview” by which you want your business or department to be run. This is where mission statements, vision statements and value statements are extremely useful. They put on paper the standards, policies, overall goals and objectives the company desires to achieve and maintain.

These statements express your beliefs, the foundational principles that govern your practices, offer the “big picture” of what you hope to accomplish, and verbalize truth as your company perceives it.

A big question facing many of us in the business and professional world today is one that was raised by Pontius Pilate, who served as judge at the trial of Jesus before His crucifixion. Pilate asked, “What is truth?” (John 18:38). He was suggesting truth – and the “right” worldview – is whatever one wants it to be.

However, my experience has taught me that if everything is true, then nothingis true. I have learned the only objective truth that is time-tested and will help you in standardizing and solidifying your company values is the Bible. Psalm 119:152 teaches, “Long ago I learned from your statutes that you established them to last forever.” Many other verses in that Psalm also affirm the enduring, unchanging truths, precepts and principles established in the Word of God.

If you desire to oversee or be part of an ethical workplace, I recommend you establish a worldview that lasts forever, one that does not change according to the need of the moment or shifting whims of society. The Scriptures provide the only source for that. They worked well in the 1st century – and they are good for the 21st century as well.

Woman’s purse snatchedoutside Publix

On Monday, March 24 at about 7:45 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a report of a purse snatching outside of Publix, 1001 South Federal Highway.

The victim told officers that she and her daughter had just parked

their car in the parking aisle on the north side of the lot and were walking towards the front of the store. Before they reached the entrance, an unknown male came up behind them and grabbed the victim’s purse from her hand. The suspect ran west on Camino Real then crossed the roadway to the Dixie Mobil, where the victim lost sight of him.

The victim went behind the Dixie Mobil and found her purse lying on the ground, with all of the contents dumped out. Her iPhone, cash, and credit cards were missing.

The victim was not injured.If anyone has information about

this crime, they are asked to call Detective Cruz at (561) 338-1320 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.

Man Robbed After MeetingProstitute

On Sunday, March 23 at 12:55 p.m., Boca Raton Police officers responded to a robbery at the Quality Inn, 2899 North Federal Highway.

Officers met with the 80 year old victim who said he arranged to meet an escort whom he found on a website. The victim arrived at the hotel at the appointed time. He went to the room and was let in by “Amy.” Once inside the room, the victim felt something wasn’t right and told “Amy” he needed to leave. When he stepped outside the room he was accosted by a male who took his cellphone from his pants pocket.

The victim waited in the lobby for police to arrive and while he was waiting, he saw the suspect walk through the lobby and then leave in an unknown direction. The victim was not injured.

Detectives investigating the crime made contact with “Amy”; who is actually “Frank”. He told officers he only knows the suspect as “Chief.”

If anyone has information about this crime or can identify the suspect, they are asked to call Detective Jeff Stepp at (561) 620-6196 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.

Timeless Beauty Catherine Deneuve is “On My Way”

movie stars, Catherine Deneuve has been one of the fairest of all for more than half a century.

At age 70 Deneuve is still quite beautiful. In her latest film, “On My Way,” she almost seems to be playing herself.

Bettie (Deneuve) is a former Miss Brittany who missed the Miss France finals because of a car accident. Widowed by a man she never really loved, Bettie has settled in the routine of running her family restaurant. The rather dull routine is spiced up by an ongoing affair with a married man her age. As we meet

Bettie she has just learned her lover has jilted her for a 25-year-old chick.

Bettie lives with her crabby, domineering mother (Claude Gensac). Things are going none too well at the restaurant. Bills are piling up and creditors are threatening.

When Bettie’s estranged daughter Muriel (singer Camille) calls with an urgent request that would entail a road trip, Bettie figures what does she have to lose?

The assignment is to take her surly grandson, Muriel’s son Charly (Nemo Schiffman), to his grandfather’s so Muriel can interview for an internship that could turn her life around.

Bettie hasn’t seen Charly in several years, and he is not too keen on travelling with his grandmother. The relationship is rocky at first. At one point Charly tries to run away, but eventually a mutual bond develops, and it is sealed when Bettie

decides to attend a reunion event of former Miss France candidates at a lakeside resort.

Director Emmanuelle Bercot was born three years after Deneuve shot to stardom in “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” in 1964, but she is keenly in sync with the prospect of a woman whose life has been built upon her physical appearance facing the inevitable aging process.

There is an underlying melancholia to “On My Way,” adapted from a screenplay written expressly for Deneuve by Jerome Tonnerre, but it is never defeatist. It is often funny and yes, sexy. Bettie never gives in to self-pity or forces that would dominate her. Catherine Deneuve is a poster girl for women facing old age without fear or regret.

Jason Bateman: No More Mr. Nice Guy

Mr. Nice Guy reputation with “Bad Words,” his directorial debut.

With his hair shorn in an angry buzz cut, Bateman plays the thoroughly reprehensible Guy Trilbey, a 40-year-old sore loser. How sore? Because he did not win a spelling bee back in the eighth grade, thanks to a convenient loophole he has decided to sabotage the system and compete again as an adult against 12 and 13-year-olds.

“Bad Words” is rated R for the

bad words that regularly issue from the lips of Guy Trilbey, who has contempt for just about everybody.

B a t e m a n himself says that the script

by Andrew Dodge does for spelling bees what “Bad Santa” did for Christmas.

The problem is it’s pretty much a one-joke idea except for Guy Trilbey’s inappropriate behavior toward everyone. Guy heaps his distain on the journalist who is following him and likes him well enough that she is seduced by him.

Kathryn Hahn plays the journalist, Jenny Wigeon, who apparently feels bad sex is better than no sex at all.

Guy despises the Golden Quill

National Spelling Bee director, Dr. Bernice Deagan, played by Allison Janney in condescending schoolmarm mode.

The biggest heap of contempt and blind hatred is heaped up the spelling bee’s founder Dr. Bowman, played by Philip Baker Hall. It would be a spoiler to reveal why Guy hates Dr. Bowman so strongly, so we’ll say no more.

The only person Guy seems to like, other than himself, is Chaitanya Chopra, a pint-sized, very bright 1 2 - ye a r -old boy of Indian parentage. Chaitanya is played by Rohan C h a n d , a very appealing y o u n g

actor with huge brown eyes and a ready smile.

Yep, there is a moral to the story after all, and that what gives this otherwise vulgar movie “redeeming social value.” Yes it is quite funny, but there are as many groans as there are laughs. Jason Bateman is probably better off playing the good guy he seems to be.

The Mad Fantasies of Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson lives in some kind of parallel, crazy, beautiful universe.

His latest fantasy is “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and it is his grandest vision to date.

Even more than “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,” Anderson’s surrealistic take on Jacques Cousteau, “Grand Budapest Hotel” is a strange and wonderful creation, filled with one-off characters that seem vaguely familiar yet distinctly artificial.

The pink wedding cake hotel of the title is obviously not real, but enchanting just the same. It is set in 1932 in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, not Hungary, in mountains that look vaguely like the Alps.

At the center of the story, inspired by Viennese author Stefan Zweig and fleshed out by writer-director Wes Anderson, is a prissy, fastidious and somewhat androgynous concierge named M. Gustave H.

This role is perfect for Ralph Fiennes, a delicate-featured actor who can be effeminate, manly, refined and sexy all in the same character.

Gustave, a “most liberally perfumed man,” is a by-the-books perfectionist at the complete service of his oddball guests- especially the wealthy older women he often seduces.

Gustave’s boy Friday is a novice Lobby Boy named Zero (wide-eyed newcomer Tony Revolori). Zero has zero education and zero family, but he is eager to please.

Plot is the least important part of “Grand Budapest Hotel,” but the main device is the theft of a priceless painting called “Boy with Apple.”

The painting had been owned by dowager and hotel guest Madame D (Tilda Swinton), who expires with a hotly-contested will.

The large cast of characters is familiar to Wes Anderson fans, because most of them have been in his previous seven films. F. Murray Abraham is the mysterious hotel owner Mr. Moustafa. Adrien Brody is the weasely Dmitri. Willem Dafoe is the violent, dangerous Jopling. Jeff Goldblum is the officious Deputy Kovacs. With shaved head Harvey Keitel is a tattooed inmate known as Kovacs. Edward Norton is Police Inspector Henckls and Bill Murray makes the most of a brief appearance as M. Ivan.

New to the Anderson ensemble is Saoirse Ronan, baker of the delectable pastries that figure prominently in the plot and love prospect for Zero.

There is a little bit of everything: a tense stalking scene, an intricate prison break, chases, a runaway sled, a crowded, noisy gunfight and a funicular that provides the only transportation to the hotel, yet looks like a child’s toy.

“Grand Budapest Hotel” is heavy with nostalgia and movies of the 1930s. It had a special resonance for me, because much of the first seven years of my life was spent in grand hotels and resorts not unlike the Budapest. Seeing “Grand Hotel Budapest” was like awaking to a dream sad and sweet, accompanied by an indescribable sense of loss.

Flood Insurance Bill: Changes for Buyers and SellersHomeowners get relief from

skyrocketing Flood Insurance Rates. President Obama signed a Flood Insurance Bill called H.R. 3370 on March 21, 2014. Like Obama Care, this Flood Insurance Bill (H.R 3370) can be very confusing. After doing some research, I was able to summarize what this means for you.

Overall, this is considered short term relief from the overwhelming premium increases as seen in the past. There are 3 general areas which will be discussed in reference to how this Flood Insurance

Bill will impact your bottom line: Changes for Real Estate Buyers and Sellers, Changes for Homeowners, and for Homeowners Whom Have Already Paid.

Changes for Buyers and Sellers:

Before the Bill was Signed:The amount of money paid

for Flood Insurance Coverage would readjust at the time of sale thus causing a buyer to pay hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars more in rates. This has an impact on the price a buyer would pay for a home due to affordability of these payments.

Under the New Bill:Flood Insurance prices have

continuity which means if you purchase a property, the price of the insurance is treated the same as the price of the previous property owner. The prices may go up. But according to the new rules within the new bill, prices will not increase any more than if the previous homeowner owned the property.

It is going to take time for these changes to be seen. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) still has to study the bill and then certain specifics must be implemented.

It will take time for the mortgage companies to be notified and a number of other changes to be made from software adjustments to people enforcing them. I wish I had an answer for the time frame in which you will see an impact but it is very unclear. Once a time frame is implemented, I will keep you posted.

Next week, I will go over what changes will affect homeowners and what this means if you are a homeowner which has overpaid for Flood Insurance.

Financial SuicideAs a matrimonial attorney I

cannot envision suggesting to a hard working, high earning, and professional husband that the way to defeat the wife in the divorce game was to surreptitiously spend all of your money so there would be none left to divide with the wife.

That type of process will have a number of bad results. It will clearly create legal fees to the wife, and her family who will often come to the wife’s aid, virtually spending the wife’s inheritance.

While the husband must believe that he can regain his financial position quickly and the wife cannot that is like betting on you in marathon. It might work out, but maybe not.

Florida statutory and appellate law has ways to stop the nonsense. A review by the wife’s lawyer and forensic accountant, if she can afford that luxury, will investigate the finances of the husband over time and come up with

the husband’s plan. Proof of the husband’s

intent will usually be apparent as his spending habits will have reduced his liquidity through bizarre purchases, money spend on his new lady friend(s). Cash will be leaking directly to the husband with no rational purpose other than stuffing the greenbacks into virtual pillow cases all over the neighborhood and further.

This type of activity is often masked by the husband’s accusations of the wife’s infidelity, while he has been a long term hound dog. These types, however, seem to want to have their cake and eat it too and often; after accusing the wife of infidelity he talks her back into bed which, technically, defeats any claim he has made against her for adultery.

This syndrome is more popular than it should be and not likely to succeed, but the cost that will result to both parties financially and emotionally will not be worth it.

How Do You Approach the Start of a New Day?

When you awaken to prepare for another workday – especially a Monday – what is your typical attitude? Are you filled with enthusiasm and anticipation, looking forward to opportunities and challenges the day will present? Or do you experience feelings of frustration or even dread, wishing you could get back into bed, pull up the covers, and forget about going to work?

If you fall on the negative side of this equation, there could be many reasons: Deadlines you face might seem overwhelming; you could be facing serious conflict with superiors or coworkers; you may not be a good match for the work you are asked to perform; or the job you have held for a long time could have grown tedious and routine, causing you to feel bored and uninspired rather than eager and energized.

Other reasons for disliking work might come to mind, but your mind itself could be a primary factor: the attitude you allow yourself to have toward your work and your workplace. Even though we cannot always change our circumstances, we can choose our attitudes toward our circumstances.

I am not a “power of positive thinking” person – but I am a person who ascribes to positive believing. This is why I like to start each day – sometimes before I get out of bed – by silently repeating a favorite verse from the Bible: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). If I truly believe that, that God has seen fit to give me a new day, filled with opportunity, new experiences and unexpected encounters, I can approach it with optimism and expectation.

Most days never turn out exactly

as I have anticipated. A friend I did not expect to hear from gives me a call or sends an email, leading to meaningful interaction. Out of the blue someone contacts me and asks if I would be interested in a new writing or editing project; something totally off my planning grid. I start working on one task but must shift my focus onto something else, and then I realize the original task was not as urgent as I had thought, so I could postpone it for another day.

Nearly six years ago, after successfully coming through open-heart surgery, I determined to regard each new day as a “gift.” Not one of us has tomorrow guaranteed, but surviving a major event like that has a way of impressing that reality on you. So while I recognize not every day will be enjoyable or easy, if God has given it to me, there must be a good reason – and I can look forward to whatever the day presents.

Here are principles from the Scriptures to consider when embarking on a new day:

Regard each day as an opportunity, not an imposition. As the saying goes, “our days are numbered.” So we should appreciate what we have and make good, wise use of the time give to us. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

Redeem the day before it is lost. The one commodity we all have in common is time. And we cannot save it for use on another day. Once an hour has passed, it is gone forever, so we should consider how to use it for greatest advantage.“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, making the best use of the time, for the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16).

Strikers sign German Bundesliga veteran forward Marius Ebbers

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the signing of German Forward Marius Ebbers for the 2014 Spring season. The 36 year old Ebbers, born in Essen, West Germany, played for several clubs in both the first and second divisions of the German Bundesliga, including FC St. Pauli, where he played for 5 seasons.

“We are excited to be able to have a player of Ebbers’ quality join the Strikers,” said Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. “Ebbers is a goal scorer and was the team captain for St. Pauli. The fans there loved him and I’m sure our fans will enjoy watching him play as well.”

Ebbers scored 122 goals in Germany, including 46 for FC St. Pauli. Ebbers joins the Strikers as

the only player in the NASL to have scored on Strikers and longtime Eintrach Frankfurt goalkeeper Oka Nikolov. The two met in Frankfurt in 2002 while Ebbers was playing for MSV Duisburg.

Ebbers is well known for his fair play, when during a match with St. Pauli, the forward scored a goal with his hand. The referee and linesman didn’t see the handball clearly and gave St. Pauli the goal. Ebbers, however, went up to the officials and came clean about the infringement and asked them to disallow the goal, which they did. St. Pauli went on to win that match in injury time.

Marius Ebbers is the sixth new player to join the Strikers for 2014. The club has also re-signed 14 players from last season’s roster.

Lynn Lacrosse falls 11-0to Saint Leo

Lynn University’s lacrosse team (1-6) fell to Saint Leo (6-3), 11-0, in Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Knights fall to 0-2 in SSC play while the Lions advance to 2-0. Taylor Ferrino made 18 saves in goal for the Blue & White.

Ferrino made seven saves in the first quarter, despite allowing six goals to slide through. The Lions defense held Lynn to just five shots in the opening 15 minutes of play. SLU added three more goals in the second quarter to lead 9-0 at half.

The Blue & White’s defense held Saint Leo’s offense back for the third quarter only allowing just one goal,

by Matt Weller with 1:40 to play, for the Lions to extend their lead to 11-0. In the fourth quarter Lynn took a game-high 10 shots but was unable to find the back of the net. The Lions scored their final goal with 7:36 remaining in regulation when Ryan McCarthy notched his second goal of the contest.

Chris D’Angelo won 9-of-14 face offs for the Fighting Knights while grabbing a team-high eight ground balls. The Lions offense was led by Matt Obermeyer who had four goals on five shots and Dylan Yonts who had a hat trick and dished out an assist.

Danielle Aromashodu claimed victory in the 400 meter hurdles to conclude the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, Florida Atlantic University’s first outdoor track meet of the 2014 season. The senior crossed the finish line in 59.65, to rank first in Conference USA and 10th in the nation.

Aromashodu’s finish marks her fastest opening of the outdoor season since joining the Owls as a freshman. Teammate Sitia Martinez also competed in the event in her collegiate outdoor season debut finishing fifth with a final time of 1:02.99. Martinez is ranked fifth in the conference, the top ranking by a freshman for the 400 hurdles.

“It’s a great beginning to the outdoor season after having a couple of weeks to recover from indoors, it really looks like we opened up with a bang” said Head Coach Alex Smolka.

In the 100 meter dash, Regina Wilkerson recorded the Owls’ top finish coming in fifth with a final time of 12.00. Wilkerson’s time puts the freshman 10th on FAU’s all-time top-

times list and sixth in the conference. Deja Jones followed finishing sixth in 12.03 and ninth in the conference with a personal record. Amanda Worley also recorded a new personal record for the event with a final time of 12.71.

Worley then competed in the 200 meter dash taking FAU’s top finish with a final time of 25.76 for 16th-place. Elana Ainsley followed in 17th-place crossing the finish line in 25.89. Ashley Stewart, Mar’rhe Everheart, Nicole Poole also ran in the 200 meter. All of FAU’s competitors in the event set new personal records.

For the distance events, Chloe Sell was the Owls’ top finisher earning third-place and setting a personal record in the 1500 meter run with a final time of 4:53.32. Tara Cripe finished fifth in 4:53.51 also setting a new personal record.

FAU will continue its outdoor season on Saturday, March 29, returning back to the University of Miami for the UM Invitational.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers ExtendGunther Kronsteiner

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced that they have extended the contract of Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner through the 2014 Season. Coach Kronsteiner signed as head coach for the Strikers right before the 2013 Fall Season. He is also the Sports Director for the Strikers. As per club policy, terms were not disclosed.

“Gunter brings total professionalism to our team both on and off the field,” said Strikers President Tom Mulroy. “His level of football experience is top notch. I truly believe Gunter can take the Strikers to the next level.”

“I’m very pleased to be here,” said

Kronsteiner. “I’ve already established a special relationship with the fans, it’s more of a family atmosphere than I’ve had on other teams, there’s a lot of interaction with the fans, and I like this, it’s a really good atmosphere.”

After only two wins in twelve matches in the Spring

of 2013, the Strikers decided to move in a new direction and relieved Head Coach Daryl Shore of his duties. The team brought in Coach Kronsteiner just a few weeks before the Fall Season opener, and he immediately had an impact on the team. After losing the first two closely contested matches to start the Fall Season, the team managed to put together a string of five unbeaten games.

This year the team brought back 14 players from last year’s squad, and has also added 5 key players including 19 year German Bundesliga veteran goalkeeper Oka Nikolov, who signed for the Spring Season.
