TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 1, 2019

Today’s readings praise the virtue of humility and offer concrete ways for us to become more humble. The Book of Sirach suggests a practical reason for acting with humility: humble people are more likeable than the arrogant. Even God “finds favor” with those who humble themselves. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus provides real-world suggestions for growing in humility and teaches us never to assume we are better than others. His words change our outward behavior and expand our hearts and minds to care about people we might have dismissed before. This practical, almost “folksy” wisdom about humility helps us behave better in daily life and makes our lofty goal of eternal life more accessible. Our reading from Hebrews affirms that heaven is indeed approachable. The personal love and sacrifice of Jesus have opened “the city of the living God” to us. Humility prepares us for paradise.

GOD IS ENOUGH

Many outstanding thinkers in the Church have devoted themselves to the study of humility. Saints such as Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Teresa of Ávila have helped us appreciate the essence of humility. Basically, humility accepts the simple truth that God creates everything—and provides all that we creatures require. Humility, then, is faith applied to daily life. If I am created in God’s very image, and if my life’s goal is to unite with God in paradise, then God desires only paradise for me. Practically speaking, that means all day, every day, God will provide just exactly what I need to grow in holiness. Furthermore, God does this for me just as much as for every other creature on earth. All the gifts and talents that we have come from God, and everything we see as failure or weakness could never lie beyond God’s powerful redemption.

Today’s Readings: Sir 3:17–18, 20, 28–29; Ps 68:4–5, 6–7, 10–11; Heb 12:18–19, 22–24a; Lk 14:1, 7–14(Worship Pgs.1174).
