The Current Quarterly aims to be more to the Cape community than a purse-sized fashion magazine.

This is why with every fashion season we host a fashion show in which our advertisers participate, to benefit a local non-profit.

This spring season we asked the Harwich-based nonprofit WE CAN (Women’s Empowerment through Cape Area Networking) if they would like to be the ben-eficiaries of the fashion show's proceeds.

Since 2001, WE CAN has empowered Cape Cod women of all ages to successfully navigate challenging transitions in their lives by providing information and referrals, training and workshops, as well as mentoring and legal advice. Much of what WE CAN does helps to build a woman’s self-worth.

The Current Quarterly can only hope to make the kind of impact in the community that WE CAN has by giving local boutiques a voice, offering fashion tips and tricks that can help boost self-confidence, and of course by continuing to produce a fashion show once a quarter that will support many local non-profits to come.

Help us make that impact by joining us April 4 at Cape Cinema, 6 p.m. sharp, for a fashion show that will feature local women wearing clothing from local bou-tiques, and make a difference in many local women’s lives.

Hemline: Ankle Length PantSlim-cut cropped pants whether they are jeans or trousers can be paired with a blazer, a great blouse or a sim-ple t-shirt. The key is to choose the right shoe. If you are short, wear an ankle length pant with heels, otherwise heels, flats or oxfords work.

Page 9: The Current Quarterly Spring 2013

Neckline: SquareUniversally flattering for a large or small bust, this neckline can be dramatic or classic. Shows off the collarbone making you look longer and leaner. Leave alone or add a necklace; just make sure you define the waist so you don’t look like a block.

Waistline: Drop waistThis lower than normal waistline falls at or just above the natural hips, lengthening the torso. Drop waists may hang loose, which can flatter-ing on a smaller person, or skim over the natu-ral waistline, flattering a larger figure. Dresses or skirts with a drop waistline can be long or short, and are often paired with pleating details.

Print: FloralLarge or small, floral prints are an essential for your spring wardrobe. You can find a floral print in a dress, pant, blouse, tee, romper or short. They are showing in all color pal-ettes from neons to pastels, and style decades from the 1930s to the 1980s and beyond.

Looking back at pictures from summer, that short but magical season just a few months

earlier, we see a vibrant and bronzed version of ourselves that we left behind sometime in late October. But let's face it (no pun intended) when winter draws to a close, we New Englanders that are hearty enough to stick around and brave the cold are a parched, pale and dusty lot.

Soon, the buds on the trees will be vying for the sun's attention and so will we. It's time to shake ourselves out of the winter doldrums and squint our way towards the bright glory of spring. But how do we shed that sallow skin that Jack Frost left behind and return to our natural, summer-ready radiance?

First and foremost, exfoliate regularly and respon-sibly. Too often, people mistreat their skin with abrasive scrubs and/or microdermabrasion. These mechanical exfoliants act like sandpaper and

scratch the skin causing inflammation which leads to further damage. A better way to exfoliate is dai-ly with a non-abrasive, fruit enzyme cleanser that gently dissolves dead skin cells without upsetting healthy skin underneath. One of my favorites is Ar-cona's organic Kiwi Bar which cleans and polishes with each daily use.

For deeper exfoliation, I recommend using a mild glycolic & lactic acid mask once a week. Masks provide more concentrated versions of active in-gredients than products intended for daily use and bring more noticable results. One mask that I use at home and in facial treatments is REN's chemical and synthetic-free Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask. Four effective AHA's go to work removing

dead skin cells while essential fatty acids heal and hydrate. Trick of the trade: apply mask in the shower and let the steam step it up a notch.

The single most important thing you can do for marked improvement in the overall tone and texture of your skin is incorporate a vitamin C serum into your daily regimen. Topical vitamin C repairs as well as

prevents environmental damage on a cellular level while strengthening capillary walls, making skin more resilient against harsh conditions. My skin would not last a day without Skin Ceuticals CE & Ferulic serum. It's definitely an investment but the immediate and dramatic results are worth it.

Now that your skin is smooth and nourished, it's time to hydrate and that doesn't mean slathering on layer upon layer of heavy cream. I like to get more out of my moisturizer than moisture alone and that is definitely the case with Arcona's Hy-drating Peptide Complex. This lightweight cream/gel is rich with firming peptides and skin strength-ening flavonoids which repair depleted, stressed skin. Trick of the trade: add just a dab of Arcona's Bronze Tinted Self Tanner for a subtle warm glow.

Nighttime is our skin's chance to restore and rejuvenate. REN's Bio-Retinoid Anti-Ageing Concentrate is a synergistic blend of potent 100% natural derivatives of vita-min A which will do just that. This super-charged serum combats the appearance of wrinkles, sun spots and other imperfections leaving your complex-ion visibly younger and brighter in the morning.

Trick of the trade: Place a few drops right into your moisturizer and apply before bed.

So, now you know the secret weapons necessary for turning back the wrath of the elements and transforming your winter skin in a fortnight. The good news is that you don't need to do anything more than follow a well-informed, high-quality skincare regimen at home.

As for me, I will continue to build up my bun-ker of skincare products at Supple Apothecary so you'll have all the remedies you need...winter, spring, summer and fall.

Quality Undergarments

The most significant thing a woman can do to change her silhouette is to wear the

appropriate undergarments for her size, shape and attire. Celebrity stylists recognize the im-portance of this and are sure to always dress their celebrity clients in the bra, underwear and shapewear that will best show off their fashion and their figure. You may not be a celebrity on a red carpet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in undergarments that will enhance your assets and control your problem areas. Take it from a woman who has made the female form her business. Aimee Guthinger from Bedroom I’s Boutique in Osterville offers these tips and tricks for finding the perfect undergarments for your needs:

• A high value woman, meaning a woman who is confident in the value she brings with her wherever she goes knows that investing in her appearance is key. Not every-one can be a super model, but everyone can take pride in their appearance and paying atten-tion to foundations communicates that truth faster than any label or brand identified on sight.• You can be wearing the most expensive outfit in your closet, but if you have the appearance of a third breast or the outline of your underwear showing through you have completely devalued the investment in yourself and your wardrobe.• Keep an open mind! Women tend to gravitate toward undergarments based on their emotional reaction to their appearance

Page 31: The Current Quarterly Spring 2013

on the hanger. Underthings perform a func-tion; they are not supposed to offer hanger appeal in the same way clothing do.• Shapewear always works best when com-bined with a well-fit bra to lift the bust off the midsection and elongate the torso.• Shop for your body type. "Apple" shapes will do best focusing on the top down and "pears" from the bottom up.• Bring the outfit with you shopping and always try on over the foundation.• The size chart on any piece of shapewear, especially Spanx, is only a starting point. The size charts offer a size range to get you started, but you need to try these items on and find what works for you. Size never matters, only fit. The #1 mistake people make with shapewear is to put on a foundation that fits and think they need to go a size down. Shapewear is meant to move with you and when worn too small it will often cause more harm than good. It is very difficult to "spot shape" and when people attempt to address only one area, they tend to push that problem to another area instead of creating their best silhouette.

Molly Avellar is a native Cape Codder whose artistic family has always pushed

her to express her creativity. Molly has been designing jewelry since her days at Nauset High School. She contin-ued to pursue this interest at UMASS Dart-mouth and Mass Art, and then attended a Jewelry Tech Intensive in San Francisco. She says her designs are inspired by her natural surroundings: the beach and the sea. Molly has a presence online at mollyavel-lar.com as well as on Etsy.com, at The Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis, and has partici-pated in local craft shows. Her creations are primarily sterling silver, with unique accents on them. She has become known for her bangle bracelets and

stackable rings, and has recently started add-ing pops of color to her jewelry by incorpo-rating semi-precious stones. At 24, Molly is still evolving her brand. She hopes to expand her local gallery pres-ence and eventually show her entire collection at a nationally recognized trade show. She funds her business by waitressing at Guapo’s in Orleans. The rest of her time is spent working on her craft, and setting goals for expanding her business. Molly seeks to put out a unique and qual-ity prieces, and to be very confident in her product. One's confidence in presenting their product is inherently tied to how they present themselves. Molly Avellar is her brand, and

Taking Your Brand to the Next Level

STORYFEATURE

Page 36: The Current Quarterly Spring 2013

how she displays herself has an influence on how people view her jewelry. Molly describes her style as “extremely laid back,” and, like many people, black is go-to color. It is not that she is afraid of brights and prints, she simply sticks to what is “com-fortable.” Feeling good in clothing is so much about fit and dressing your body correctly. No two women have the same shape, and having the expectation that mass-produced clothing can fit so many different body types leads to frus-tration. Molly is smaller on top and more curva-

ceous from the waist down, which means she should emphasize her top half by showing off the collar bone, emphasize the waist and look for jeans with a boot cut. But trying different styles, fits, lengths and fabrics is a must on the way to discover-ing what looks best on your figure, as is step-ping out of your I-only-wear-black comfort zone. When you push past that comfortable edge, your unique style begins to emerge. We started our Molly Avellar mission looking for classic pieces like A-line skirts, blazers cinched at the waist, great dresses for daytime that can be accessorized for a night

Page 37: The Current Quarterly Spring 2013

out, unique tops, and shoes that would elongate the legs. Our first stop was Wicked Thrift in Dennis where we found staple pieces for Avellar’s closet - a brown tweed belted blazer that highlights her nar-row waist, a blue cocktail dress that highlights her eyes and her curves, a classic black Coach shoulder bag, and a pair of gold linen pointy toed heels.

Next up was Shawl, in Dennis Port, which offered unique tops that add flair and fun to any wardrobe. Avel-lar looked the part of an artist in her belted tunic and flowy printed top that can be worn belted, with a blazer, or with leggings and heels. Next we headed down Cape to Whimsy where we found Avellar’s “wow piece” - a silver and blue silk v-neck top that bal-ances her top half with her lower half beautifully. At If The Shoe Fits in Or-leans, we found sophisticated “foundation pieces” - a black blazer and slim fit black pants that can be mixed and matched with almost anything, as well as a pair of leopard print heels.

Page 38: The Current Quarterly Spring 2013

We finished up the shop-ping day at Shift Eco Boutique in Hyannis where Avellar picked up some staples, such black leggings, as well as a distinc-tive top, sweater and cardigan. Hair and makeup are ad-ditional ways you can express your style and creativ-ity. So, we couldn’t let Molly go without finishing her look off by spending time a little time at Inspire Salon in Hyannis. Kristen McCabe gave Molly ideas on how to easily style her hair in a mature, yet play-ful way. Samantha Welch, an esthetician and makeup artist, taught Avellar how to apply subtle makeup to make it last, to emphasize her eyes and lips, and encouraged her to take risks with color. Avellar has great instincts about her busi-

ness and her style, but by adding all of these great pieces to her wardrobe, we have given her the tools to represent her brand in a way that truly reflect its uniqueness and quality.

Armed with a closetful of beautiful looks that reflect her sophisticated brand,

Molly is almost ready to take on her next trade show. One of the most important next steps a small business owner like Molly can take is to develop a strong narrative. Here’s why: telling your story effectively enables you to create relationships and con-nections rather than simply opportunities for transactions. It allows your audience to see your value rather than just your product, compelling them to want to work with you instead of someone else. At its best, your story inspires others. These five steps will put you on the path to telling your story and elevating your brand – whether personal or professional.1. Get real. Effective stories come from a

place of authenticity. Pretend you are tell-ing your most trusted advisor or friend about your business. Tell them about your motivation, your passion, and your hopes. Write that description down.

2. Get focused. Where are you going? Write

What's Your Story?Simple Steps to Elevate Your Brand

by Kate Sheehan

Page 40: The Current Quarterly Spring 2013

a vision – an aspirational statement of where you see yourself or your brand. Why are you going? Set out a mission – a clear statement of purpose to guide your actions.

3. Filter. Now that you have the “no holds barred” version of your story, underline the most compelling messages about your product or service. Leave out the pieces that might be too much detail, without losing those that make your story real and relatable. Remember that being authentic is what will allow you to build sustainable relationships.

4. Who cares? Or, know your audience(s). Understand what each needs and high-light messages that will apply specifically to them.

5. Test and refine. Take your story on the road. Practice in the mirror until it feels conversational. Test it with friends and family, refine it, and then try it on a client or prospect.

Once you have your story down and your confidence up, take it further. Create a mar-keting and communications plan that uses your key messages to extend your brand more strategically – for example, within your mar-

keting materials and social media platforms or, for individuals, via your bio, resume and LinkedIn profile.

After 12 years with two Fortune 100 companies, Kate Sheehan left her corporate communications job and moved from New York home to Cape Cod, where she founded Telltale Media. Kate specializes in freelance writing (from marketing copy to web content to speeches), communications consulting, brand identity, and PR/media relations. Mother of three, Mozelle Andrulot grew up in Eastham, but has traveled the world as a jazz singer. She currently resides in Eastham with her husband and three children. Mozelle left her two rowdy boys, Zion, 3, and Xavier 4 ½, home the day of the shoot to spend some quality time with her youngest, 11 month-old Winona.

In addition to having fashionable and wearable styles for adults, the Cape’s

shopping scene also offers plenty of locations to find cute yet practical children’s clothes. Three local women and their adorable (and quite well-behaved!) children show us the styles that have come out for spring.

The VenueThe Optimist Café opened in June 2006 and offers breakfasts, brunches, lunches, and high tea. Originally, the Captain Howes House, this historic home was built in 1849 by Captain Fred-erick Howes, and is now listed on the National Historic Register. The photo shoot took place in their upstairs room that is literally colored with murals by local artist Stephen Taylor, and creates a great haven for children to escape to while their parents attend events and socialize with friends.

Ashley Martin has been spending time on Cape Cod her entire life, and put

down fashion roots here when she helped her mother open Shawl Boutique and Con-signment Shop in Dennis Port in 2009. Not only does Shawl enable Ashley to apply her merchandising and buying skills , but it also provides a venue to sell the knitwear she creates for Natick, Mass., design house NIC + ZOE. The label, which started in 2005, has broad appeal and can be found in over 950 boutiques nationwide.

Current Quarterly: When did you start to become interested in fashion?

Ashley Martin: Since I was 13, I knew de-signing would be in my future.

CQ: What is your educational background?

AM: I graduated from RISD in 2008 with my

bachelor's in Apparel Design.

CQ: You helped your mother, Patty Martin, open Shawl. Can you tell us about that?

AM: I am very close with my family. They have always been such a strong support in my life. I was excited to share my experience and ideas with them when the opportunity presented itself. Once we had the property everything else fell into place very smoothly. Initially I helped with concept (boutique and consignment sides) and store layout.

The goal is to create a fun shopping experi-ence where customers can shop a side or mix both new and gently used. The consignment side is because my mom and I like the idea of

'recycling'/finding a new home for clothes. I also wanted to create a beautifully merchan-dised boutique with new emerging trends, brands, concepts and ideas. Fashion is always exciting. Now I am a co-buyer with my mom.

CQ: When did you start to work at NIC + ZOE? What do you do for them?

AM: I interned at NIC+ZOE the summer before my senior year. I knew I found a spe-cial place and eagerly went back after gradu-ation. I started full time July 2008. My title is "knitwear designer." Designing knitwear is a two step process. I first develop the knit 'fabric' and then design silhouette/concept. I mostly design novelty knitwear, prints, skirts and dresses.

CQ: How would you describe your personal style?

AM: I tend to wear timeless staple pieces, mixed with fun styles, that can be worn to work but also out to dinner or during the weekend, yet I'm not afraid to experiment with my wardrobe.
