Welcome

BUSINESSL O C A L

Happy New Year everyone!I hope everyone got what they wanted for Christmas, and didn’tover do it too much on the food and drink. Still there are plenty ofadvertisers in this month’s edition who will be able to help you getback to your ideal figure.I think it is fair to say that you don’t get much for £1 these days - Istill find it hard to believe that a packet of crisps can cost 70p!However the Deans Neighbourhood Watch have a bargain on offerin their article on page 43, £1 for Lifetime membership!!! I had toread it twice to make sure I had seen it correctly - the potentialdiscounts on home insurance alone make this worth a fewmoments of anyone’s time, well done to them.

7Saltdean Scribblers

Local authorsbook launch

Our local group of writers the Saltdean Scribblers have just published “Scribblers’ Journey: An Anthology.”As our local author Domenica de Rosa has commented in the forward, ‘I’ve never met a group of writerslike the Saltdean Scribblers’ as she is ‘impressed by their sheer facility with words’ and their ‘generosity’.Any anthology from this group will be varied and challenging at times, sometimes funny but above all agood read. The following provided by Marian Phillips describes the origins of the Scribblers and thebackground to their newly published anthology.

SALTDEAN SCRIBBLERS

Once upon a time, at an open day at SaltdeanCommunity Centre, Dawn, the librarian said wistfully,“What I’d really like is a writers’ group here…..”“Oh, so would I!” I replied. And so that is how, threeyears ago, Saltdean Scribblers was born.

We are a disparate group of would-be writers of allages, backgrounds and talents, who meet once afortnight, thanks to Saltdean Library, to discuss andcritique our efforts. We’ve organised severalsuccessful open evenings to include the localcommunity, where we’ve read some of our poetry, prose, stories and scripts. Two years ago, we printeda small collection of work called “It Was A Dark AndStormy Night”.“Scribblers’ Journey” is our second anthology.

We remain a well-rounded group of writers, areflection perhaps of the diverse local communitythat is Saltdean today. We offer positive criticism of

each other’s efforts and occasional shortcomings! But are always encouraging and friendly. And friendly is the operative word.

The anthology is now available. It is a great read so Ihope you will be lucky enough to get a copy. However, please do contact Saltdean CommunityLibrary for the latest information on availability.

On December 6 2012 the ‘Scribblers’ Journey: Ananthology’ was launched at the Saltdean CommunityLibrary. There were readings from the anthology, with music and an open microphone. Local peopleread out their creative work along with members ofthe Scribblers. It was a special evening for theScribblers and the people of Saltdean - a journey forus all.

9Artist of the month

PHILIP SUGGFrom artist to puppeteer: Work in progress!

My wife Bonni and I moved down from London to Rottingdean a year ago,I had had a varied but interesting career, working in museums and gallery education as teacher, artist, film makerand producer of audio visual displays of all sorts.

I had intended to become an actor , thought better of it,and took my degrees instead as an art historian and fineartist at Nottingham University. Then I went back toBristol Drama department (my original destination) andlearned how to make films and animation. The main part of my work had been done at the NationalMaritime Museum in Greenwich, so I loved the idea ofmoving closer to the sea and to the variety oflandscape here, because drawing landscape andcityscape on the spot underpins many of my projects.I had hoped too, that that there might be other artistsinterested one of my long-standing obsessions. From theearliest age, I had made puppets and miniature theatresbased on Regency plays now associated with the nameof Pollock. Often ,I’d been able to use this interest forexhibitions, including one at Greenwich. But I did wantto create my own productions and fine other like-minded people to help.Rottingdean has proved the ideal place . I have teamedup with artist Amanda Davidson to develop new shows .Our immediate aim is to develop a unique RottingdeanSmugglers puppet show, hopefully involving other localcreative people.Just before Christmas, the Grange put on an exhibitionof work by myself, Amanda and Mick Bensley Here Icould show the largest theatre I’ve made, (withcharacters I performed at the Brunswick Festival lastsummer) and a miniature Theatre sample of how ascene from the Smugglers Play might look. We hopethis will develop next year if we get the help and fundingwe need! So if anyone reads this and is interested , get

in touch with us by asking at the Grange, or theWhiteways Centre or by Facebook.Contact: Phone, 01273 530714EMAIL hubbub5uk @yahoo.com

BUSINESSL O C A L

43Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 11

As the New Year rolls in our attention turns to health and fitness. But it’s not just us humans who can feel sluggish, lethargic and in need of a health kick.

Top 5 Tips for getting your IT fit for 2013!1. Batteries: if you have a laptop, a tablet, or a mo-

bile phone, you should let the battery dischargebefore plugging it in, and make sure that you un-plug it once you’re back to full power. Keepingthese points in mind should help you increase thelife of your batteries.

2. Updates: yes it’s a pain when you keep gettingthose pop up messages saying that your softwareneeds to upgrade, and if you are just jumping on-line to send an email you may not have the time tolet your computer set there and do all its upgrades. But these are not time wasters – if any glitches arefound the software manufacturers will send outupdates which need installing to keep your systemssafe.

3. Protection: do we keep going on about this? If wedo it’s only because all too often we see the conse-

quences of no protection. What do we mean? Wemean a quality antivirus and backup. The antiviruswill help keep the nasties away, and the backupwill mean you never lose your precious data.

4. Memory: many computers and laptops slow downbecause of the memory capacity – and many canhave more memory added which, as you mightsuspect, will get them running faster again. If youwould like to know if this applies to your machinethen please feel free to ask us.

5. Housekeeping: there are ways and means of bothphysically cleaning up your computers i.e. the key-board, screen and casing, and of “cleansing” thedata you have. Again, we are more than happy toadvise you further on the safe way to do both.

We would like to wish you all a fantastic 2013 and arehere if you need any further help or advice.

Local History - Part 10Mike Laslett

The Ocean Hotel, Saltdean

Local history Part 10 17

This Art Deco gem featured in the 1993 Hercule Poirot episode: “Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan.” Thehotel was designed by R H Jones for the Saltdean Estate. He was also architect of the Lido and the seafront flats:Marine View, Curzon House and Teynham House.

The Hotel opened in 1938 with 344 bedrooms and adining hall seating 300. The main block housed 130rooms while others were in rear blocks which could beclosed during winter.

However as early as December 1939 the hotel wasrequisitioned for war purposes; first for the ATS, thenfrom 1941 as a National Fire Services Training College.

Post-war the hotel was on the market for £500,000. Itwas reopened in 1953 by Billy Butlin, who paid only£250,000. He always got a bargain! It soon became ahoneymooners’ favourite with Redcoat entertainment, ballroom dancing and an open pool air which was laterenclosed.

Redcoats who worked at the Ocean Hotel included DesO`Connor and Jimmy Tarbuck.

Jimmy Noon is another name worthy of mention. Jimmywas resident organist at the Ocean Hotel for almostforty years. He was considered a true gentleman and avery talented musician, with an extensive repertoire. When he died in 2004 he was buried in Rottingdeanchurchyard. The simple inscription on his gravestonereads ‘Jimmy Noon Musician 1915 – 2004 Rememberedwith Love’.

In 1999 the hotel was sold to the Grand Hotel group butthe heyday could never be revived.

Plans for a reception centre for asylum seekers wereproposed without success. So between 2005 and 2010 itwas redeveloped as Grand Ocean apartments, comprising almost 300 flats and 2 doctors’ surgeries.

Do you have any memories of the Hotel you would liketo share with readers? Please e-mail me [email protected]

BUSINESSL O C A L

Hi, with a long standing history in IT (over 20 years), Iwas made redundant from American Express, andchose to follow a career path that was of personalinterest to me. Hence Angel Computers was born!

I know there are many computer repair services outthere, I have no intention of just adding to the numbers,I intend to offer something more!Personally I find it so frustrating when you go in a shopand they look down their nose at you, making theassumption that you know nothing, and in reality theyprobably know little more than what the product doesand how much it costs.

I offer what a customer deserves, a personal service, tailored to your needs, where I listen to what you want, and actually give it to you! For example a customer theother day identified that their network port didn’t workon their laptop, I could have just fixed it and charged forthe fix. However in identifying the needs of thecustomer correctly, it became clear that this was the

symptom, not the real issue, if the wireless network inthe house covered the full range of the house, he wouldrather use wireless as there are no cables, and whywould you tether a laptop, doesn’t that defeat the ideaof a laptop?

I don’t do things without asking first, so if yourPC/Laptop comes to me and there is something elserequired, or an opportunity is there to improve theperformance, I will call you and make sure you arehappy, I won’t just fit it and charge you for the extrawhen it is returned to you, giving you the peace of mindthat I care as much as you do about your PC/Laptop.Anyway, I have an advert, here, in The Deans Magazine, and you can see there is not much I cannot do, fromsimple upgrades to web page design, from individual tomedium size businesses, so feel free to get in touch.

You will be taughtto understand your body and build up your core strength, andimprove your joint health and mobility and your general bodyhealth and flexibility. There is no competitive element at all, alllevels of fitness and all ages are welcome. I’ve been teachingsince 2001 and have a very broad range of business and healthissues from my own experiences and therefore I canunderstand and share these with you and help you on your ownjourney of better fitness and health.

Today’s lifestyles invariably involve excess amounts of timesitting using a computer, watching the TV and driving and manyother limited body movement activities. The current coldweather invariably makes all these problems worse via evenmore tension stored in the muscles, stress and ongoing limitedmovement patterns. These issues are causing more people tohave problems at all ages with lack of mobility and issues ofpain like back problems. Using therapies like Bowen Techniqueto help the process and then following this up with goodmovement practices in pilates classes is the best way to takecharge of your body problems and manage them yourself.

I was first introduced to pilates by my physiotherapist in 1999as part of my rehab from a range of health problems to includea chronic back problem and I was so impressed with it after acouple of terms that I decided to train to be a teacher and I’venever looked back. It’s how I manage my own back problemsnow. So don’t wait until it gets worse …..come and see me, callme or text me and we can start to work out the best wayforward for you.

I sincerely hope that I get to meet you soon and I can teachand treat you too!

Successful Letting

Successful Renting 17 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

Theories, models, jargon, stuck in a rut, can’t see the wood for the trees-why not?Bombarded with information on what we should do, how we should do it, what other people do, what could hap-pen if we don’t do it, tales of gloom and doom…., can’t decide what to do for the best, where to start, where to gofrom here…… I don’t worry about all those things, or rather I make an effort not to! I listen to other people’s opin-ions but I like to find out for myself, and I have my own way of doing things……

One of the things I tend to do is go back to the sameclothes shop or restaurant time and time again, becausethey offer an experience that is great.

My idea of good service is that the staff are approacha-ble, friendly, not pushy, or judgemental; not expectingme to spend lots of money if I don’t want to (although Imay do so in the end!); happy to serve me a coffee andtoast, and not try to persuade me to have a full Englishbreakfast when I don’t want one ; not to persuade me Ilook good in a jacket that I can see doesn’t do anythingfor me at all.

They offer options and alternatives , they tell me whatgoes into the making of the clothes or meal-the ingredi-ents if you like. They are experienced .They make mefeel special, they consider my needs, what I like, theyfind out about me and provide things that suit me as anindividual. Their attention is in the detail.

If for any reason the experience becomes not so great Iwill talk to the staff about it and see if there is a way toget back to the good time. Something may have hap-pened that is a temporary ‘blip’ and I will be happy inthe knowledge that things will be returning to ‘normal’ .

At Lets Go we aim to provide the type of service we liketo receive ourselves.: we specialise in doing a good job,and looking after our customers. And working to highstandards doesn’t have to be expensive: accepting lowerstandards can turn out to be more costly in the long run.It can be the difference between a series of ‘quick fixes’and a more satisfactory solution.Attention to detail pays off-thorough preparation helpsto produce a better result. And being specialists in let-tings means we concentrate on what we are good at.

If you would like to find out more about our range oflettings services visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rot-

tingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or emailto: [email protected].

Lido Event - review 41

Rat Pack night atthe Lido review30th November & 1st December

Saltdean Community Centre hosted two nights of big band swing with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and MarilynMonroe tributesThe publicity poster billed it as “ an evening of music, laughter and hard liquor!” and this marvellous show didexactly what it said on the tin. The little Art Decoballroom was taken back to it’s sixties heyday and playedhost to three quite splendid tributes of Frank Sinatra,Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe. If you have ever beenin this main room during the day for a meeting or maybe aZumba class it gives the impression of needing of a littlebit of TLC, but something miraculous happens duringthese big nights. The candlelit tables, clever staging andlighting and a packed audience of 200 take you too anentirely different place.Sinatra (Neil Gordon) took to the stage first to the tune ofCome Fly With Me . The program notes indicated NeilGordon has portrayed ‘ol’ blue eyes’ around the world andon the West End stage and it’s not hard to see why. Withthe look, voice and cool gravitas of Sinatra in his midforties Gordon is clearly the consummate professional ,easing the audience nicely into the feel of the night. It wasn’t long before “ Deano” (Chris Madison) took to themic . With the tall, dark Italian looks and ever so slightlypickled demeanour , the drinking and women gags camethick and fast. However the biggest laugh of the night wasa gag at the expense of Saltdean beach! Madison’s deep, smooth baritone singing voice sat perfectly with crowdpleasers such as Sway, That’s Amore and Everybody LovesSomebody Sometime.Marilyn (Laura Nixon) was next up, tottering onto thestage all “lips and hips” with a physical similarity that wasalmost unnerving . Within seconds she had the audience

eating out of her hand. Someone near me was crying withlaughter. It has to be said that a lot of her humour is adultand not for the prudish. In my book this is just fine so longas it’s funny, and Miss Nixon is a very, very funny girl. The icing on the cake was a kicking 9 piece band completewith 5 piece horn section and three close harmonybacking singers called The DooWop Dolls who were quitebrilliant in their own right. The show lasted over two hours. My Friday night ticketcost £13.50 and this included canapés and mince pies. Thetalk on my table was that you could have spent a fortunetravelling to London to watch a West End show and notsee better than this. The rumour is that the show willreturn next year. If you missed it this time , that isunfortunate. To miss it a second time would be just plainsilly.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:Kickstarting healthy eating resolutions

The media suggests that Christmas is a happy, peaceful time spent with loving families, though in reality there can be added stresses andstrains with excesses of food, alcohol and television as well as limited routine, exercise and healthy food. 1 January brings a new im-pulse with resolutions to clean up, sober up, shape up and lose weight. For resolutions to stand the test of time, the basis of them needsto be sound.Denial Doesn't WorkThe brain (and subconscious) has no sense of humour and does notunderstand words like "NOT" and "DON'T". "I must NOT eat choco-late" becomes a mantra of "I must eat chocolate". Sound familiar?Be aware of what you say repeatedly to yourself and others.

Make Positive Choices - Add Good ThingsIt is generally easier to add something rather than exclude some-thing from your diet. Rather than just focusing on avoiding, e.g.sweets or puddings, rather focus on eating a healthier diet andyour body will not crave so much of the "bad" stuff. "MetabolicProgramming" is when your body gets used to eating healthierfood and develops a preference for that; sadly the more junk youeat the more junk you crave.

Start With A Decision And Make Specific ChoicesThe first step is to make a decision to improve your health. Thenchoose something simple and specific that you can manage to im-plement, maintain and measure, e.g.

· Drink a glass of water on rising / half hour before meals /with coffee / alternately with alcohol

· Add green leafy vegetables to stew or pasta in the last min-utes of cooking

· Substitute one of your less healthy foods with a healthierchoice, e.g.o boiled potatoes instead of chipso poach, steam, grill rather than fryo overripe bananas are sugar, almost ripe are carbohy-

drateo fruit instead of sugary puddings

· Increase your fruit and vegetable intake one piece at a time,to at least 5 a day according to 1970's figures, more if youwant optimum health

· Regularly eat a vegetable that you have not tried before

Be Gentle with Yourself - Be RealisticFalling off the healthier eating wagon is not a reason to give up.Give yourself a day off occasionally, then get back to it.

Observe and Change Your Habits - Be Honest With YourselfKeep making positive decisions and healthier choices all year. Takecontrol of your own health and stack the odds of good health inyour favour. Many serious illnesses can brew for years before be-ing felt or diagnosed. NOW is the time for prevention and aimingto be around to enjoy your life and families.
