Welcome

BUSINESSL O C A L

What a year this has been so far: Jubilee, sporting successbeyond anyone’s ability to imagine and one of the wettestsummers on record. Still as I write this the sun is shining andwho knows perhaps we will have another record breaking sunnyautumn like last year. What does the future hold? If only I had a crystal ball! One thingseems certain though is that there are still tough times ahead, and with small businesses particularly vulnerable I will make theusual request to bear them in mind before you go straight to theinternet for your next purchase. We have been able to get anexcellent deal on one of our office computers by using a localcompany, so it really is worth seeing what they might be able todo for you.Keith - Editor

Local business article

Rose Macfarlane of Adams & Remers

Meet the family – they’ll be familiar to you in one way or another. Sallyand Tom live in the Deans, not far from you, and have been married for11 years. They have a young boy and a girl, and Tom has a teenagedaughter, Katie, from a previous relationship.

Tom works for a multi-national firm in Brighton andmanages a team. Sally opened a small local shop shortlyafter she had the children, and enjoys the contact withher local community and other Mums and Dads at theschool gate. She used to work for the same multi-national as Tom, where they met.

With Katie entering her last year of school, Tom andSally have been thinking about the future. They’re atouch embarrassed to admit that they haven’t preparedWills since their marriage. Tom had a Will before, though this became invalid when he married Sally. Theirestates would therefore be divided under the “IntestacyRules”, which they don’t want.

Their main concern is, of course, who will look after thechildren if both of them were to die – they went to Parison their own for the weekend earlier this year and thatmade them think. Appointing a guardian for Katie will beslightly different than for the other children, and Tom’llneed particular advice about that.

Then there’s making sure that those left behind areprovided for. There are some insurance policies – a jointpolicy to pay-off their current mortgage and one inSally’s sole name on the flat she still owns from her pre-marriage days. Tom also has death-in-service benefitsfrom his firm, and Sally has a pension from heremployment with the same firm, which will pay a lump-sum on her death. So, they’re sorted. Just need acouple of Wills…

When planning your Wills, it’s actually really importantto think about all those policies, not just the house, flatand savings. Of course, the intention is that they’ll payoff the mortgage and provide some needed cash forthose left behind. However, it’s really worth doing more– the potential long-term savings from inheritance taxfor your children or other beneficiaries can be huge ifyou plan ahead how they will receive this money.

Each person may leave up to £325,000 to those otherthan their spouse (or charity) without inheritance taxbeing payable. This means that a married couple or civilpartners may leave up to £650,000 to the nextgeneration without any inheritance tax being due –anything over that will be taxed at 40%. For manycouples, £650K will be plenty, however if a number ofpolicies pay out on your death, this can increase yourspouse’s estate surprisingly quickly! So, on the death ofyour spouse/civil partner, the estate has grown waybeyond the equity in the house and flat.

Careful estate planning, as part of the preparation ofyour Wills, is essential to ensure not just that your Willsleave your money and assets to the right people, butthat they do so in such a way that secures your family’sfuture. By placing some of the policies in trust, themoney paid out won’t get taxed on your spouse’s death, but will be available for her or him and the rest of thefamily when you’re not there. Specialist advice is a goodplace to start, to consider your policies, think about thefamily needs and the best ways to provide for themshould the worst happen. When you seek advice foryour Wills, tell your solicitor about all your assets, including policies, as with some clever planning andforward thinking, you can do more to secure yourfamily’s future.

Rose Macfarlane is a solicitor specialising in wills, trusts andother private clients matters. You can contact her at Adams &Remers LLP on 01273 403294, email [email protected] for a free ten minute chat to see if she can helpwith your estate planning. This article is not intended to be a full summary of the law andadvice should be sought on all issues.

Tony Freeman

I started drawing and painting as a child and have always followed it through. I am a fan of Turner and alsoConstable, and children’s illustrators, but I have never knowingly been influenced by any of the Masters and I havenever had any training as such. I use different media and colours instinctively and create what I feel is right forme. There is no substitute for expensive materials and I only buy the best . As I was an indentured Leaded LightMaker in my working life, I only ever used the best tools for my trade, so when the tradesman knocks at the door, look at his tool kit and it will tell you what kind of job you are going to get.You can see my work on the Newhaven Art Club Site, towhich I belong and I am quite proud of it as I am a realamateur.

Last year I went to a tutor for pen& ink wash. Whilst Iwas there, I watched other students’ techniques andapplied these to some of my work, in other media, buton the whole I use a lot of imagination.

I am a very easily motivated person when it comes to mywork as an artist.

I did have a break from art until I fell ill, necessitatingmajor heart surgery and, in recovery, I rekindled mypassion for art as therapy for my recovery. It workedperfectly for me and I am still pursuing my Art on verymuch a daily basis.

I have done paintings of the Lone Twin Boat Project. This boat was built on appeal to schools and to thegeneral public, to donate timber which had to have a history to it. The Project wassponsored by the British Arts Council for the Olympics.

I personally donated timber I found on Kemptown beachwhen Prime minister Heath’s yacht , ‘Morning Cloud’,foundered in a storm . I also collected and donatedtimber from the damaged West Pier. I used to work at Roedean School for Girls . There theywould burn old timber so I rescued and donated that.

I decided to paint a picture of the Yacht on canvas inAcrylics and donated it for auction for the British HeartFoundation, as a thank you.Tony [email protected]

Computer Tips & Advice 35

Safe to Surf?

BUSINESSL O C A L

It has recently been reported that Google is finding almost 10,000 new maliciouswebsites every day. So that’s 10,000 new websites a day that you don't want to clickon, which could appear on the pages that you look at when you type in a search query- that makes online browsing a dangerous activity right?

43Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 11

Well, the good news is that Google is finding these sites - andsetting about getting rid of them so that we are not subjectedto them. The bad news is that they are steadily rising and usingnew methods or bypassing security measures. Proliferation onsocial media sites is proving rather successful for malwaredistribution at the moment.

So do we give up looking online? Of course not. Do we close oursocial media accounts? Good god no! Do we leave it up toGoogle and Facebook to protect us? Unfortunately, for a largenumber of people, the answer here would be yes.

Whilst it is the responsibility of large corporations to do theirbit, this doesn't negate your own, personal responsibility.

5 Ways To Stay Safe Online:

● You need to keep informed about what you can and can'tdo online.

● You need to make sure that you have a decent anti-virus/anti-spam/anti-malware product.

● You need to ensure that all of your updates are, well, upto date.

● You need to listen to yourself - if you have any doubts, don't click!

● You need a backup system covering your, erm, rear, justin case the worst should happen.

Malware is spread in several ways - malicious websites aren'tgoing to disappear anytime soon - scammers and hackers arealmost always one step ahead. Don't leave your online safety tochance - get educated and get protected so that you can enjoyyour time online.

If you have any further worries or need any more informationthen please feel free to get in touch. In the meantime we wishyou, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

A Bird’s Eye View!Successful Letting

Successful Renting 16 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

Here in Rottingdean we have been experiencing an influx of visitors. From our shop in the middle of the High Streetwe have noticed many more people looking at the properties advertised in our window. When they come in tospeak to us we discover more about what these visitors think of the village and what they are looking for; be theylandlords, tenants, sellers or buyers.

Many of these visitors coming from London or from oth-er cities say how much they like the quietness of the ar-ea and its convenience for Brighton & London. Othershave commented on the variety of property, the slowerpace of life, friendly residents, traditional shops, the seaand the beautiful countryside.

This increased interest in the village also has an impacton the surrounding local areas as people look outsidethe immediate vicinity at property to rent or buy.

There is a variety of reasons why people are movinghere and looking for a property to rent. Some are takingup a post at one of the Universities, hospitals, or largecompanies in the area. They may be on contract for a setperiod of time, or renting while they settle in and lookfor a property to buy.

Families are moving here to be near the excellentschools. Many retired people move to be nearer theirfamily and friends. Some are returning from livingabroad, or coming from their own country to work here. And there is a growing trend for people who have soldtheir home renting for a period while they look for an-other property to buy.

Other people tell us they are moving because they aredownsizing or because they need more room; they needa cheaper rent or a property in a better condition; theirlandlord is selling or they are running a business in thearea.

As well as a wide variety of reasons for renting there isalso a wide variety of requirements that people give us:they want to rent short or long term; need furnished orunfurnished; to be near a bus route, or a station; to havea garden or a balcony; a garage or off street parking; orplenty of storage space.

To find out more about renting in our area come andtalk to us……..we really do have tenants (and properties)waiting……….PS We also do Sales!

If you would like to have a chat with Denise about rent-ing out your property or if you are a tenant looking torent in the area, visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rotting-dean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to:[email protected].

Carpal TunnelSyndrome

Symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness or muscle wasting in the hand can be due to a condition called carpal tunnelsyndrome. However, if you have been suffering from this kind of problem for a while it’s a good idea to consult a health carepractitioner to find out what’s going on and rule out other causes.

The carpal tunnel is a small hollow at the front of the wristcovered by a tendon. One of the main nerves in the hand, themedian nerve, passes through this very narrow space. Becausethere is little room for expansion, when it becomes pinched itcan get inflamed, giving pain and other symptoms which caninterfere with normal daily activities and even disrupt sleep.Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome are varied but include using acomputer keyboard for long periods of time, playing racquetsports, assembly line work, painting, writing, driving and playingsome musical instruments.Women tend to be affected more than men and its onset canbe associated with wrist arthritis, being overweight or havingdiabetes. There are a variety of treatments that can help, including gentlemanipulation and stretching of the bones and muscles of thehand and wrist. At Pain Solutions we can also give specialistadvice about your computer set-up, showing you how to

reduce strain on your hands, arms and back when working atthe keyboard.Using a hand night splint is also an excellent way of preventingyour wrist bending when sleeping, which can help to reducepain and other symptoms.Anti-inflammatory medication may be useful but it is importantto look at the underlying cause rather than just treat thesymptoms. Most cases of carpal tunnel eventually settle butoccasionally steroid injections or even surgery is necessary. If you have any concerns about your hands or arms pleasecontact us at Pain Solutions and we can check things over foryou.

Local History with Mike Laslett

Mike Laslett

Local History - Part 7St Dunstan’s, Ovingdean Gap.

5331

On 21 February this year, St Dunstan's became the charity Blind Veterans UK. This happened almost a century after Sir ArthurPearson, the owner of the Evening Standard and founder of the Daily Express, established a charity to help those who had losttheir vision in the First World War. It was named The Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Care Committee. For the duration of the war, an American banker, Otto Kahn, lent his house and grounds at St Dunstan's Lodge in London'sRegent's Park for this rehabilitation work. Other centres aroundthe country such as West House, Brighton (later known asPearson House) were soon established. The Regent’s Parkproperty became dilapidated and was vacated in 1921. It wasdemolished and replaced by Winfield House, home of BarbaraHutton, the Woolworth heiress (remember the Winfield brandat Woolies!) Today it is home to the American Ambassador. Abrand new building at Ovingdean Gap opened as aconvalescent and holiday home, just before the Second WorldWar broke out.

The building in Ovingdean, known locally as “St. Dunstan’s,” isactually called Ian Fraser House after a former chairman. It wasconstructed from 1937-39 in the International Modern style tothe designs of architect Francis Lorne. The seven-storey brickand glass block is said to resemble a bi-plane. A sculpted figureholding the St. Dunstan’s badge stands over the chapel. A newsouth wing containing a swimming pool was added in 1975.

One of St Dunstan’s most celebrated residents was veteranHenry Allingham. He lived independently until a month beforehis 110th birthday, when failing eyesight prompted his move toSt Dunstan's. He died in his sleep on the morning of 18 July2009 at St Dunstan's, aged 113 years and 42 days.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)A fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance found in blood, organs and membranes. Since its primary function in every cell in the body isin generating energy, the highest concentration is found on the inner membrane of the mitochondria, the power houses inside thecell.

Discovery and historyDiscovered 1957, 1972 a deficiency was demonstrated in hu-man heart disease and 1978 Peter Mitchell received a Nobelprize. Numerous studies worldwide since 1980s in relation tovarious diseases including cardiovascular diseases and cancer;its antioxidant role as a free radical scavenger was widely stud-ied.

Deficiency is either due to decreased production (biosynthesis)or increased need in the body. Biosynthesis can be affected bygenetic factors. Chronic disease conditions (cancer, heart dis-ease, etc.) are thought to reduce the biosynthesis and increasethe demand for CoQ10 in the body, but there is no definite datato support these claims.

Studies have shown benefits in●Heart Health: Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Chronic

Heart failure (CHF).●Statins and Beta Blockers can lower CoQ10 levels in some

people with certain genetic factors, causing muscular pain.

An Anti-oxidant against Oxidative stressCoQ10 is used in treatment of a variety of disorders primarilyrelated to suboptimal cellular energy metabolism and oxidativeinjury.●Diabetes and obesity are metabolic disorders induced by

excessive dietary intake of fat, usually related to inflamma-tion and oxidative stress. CoQ10 was found beneficial intreating high fat induced hyperlipidemia in rats, though ithad no direct impact on diabetes.

●Anti-aging: protection from accelerated aging resultingfrom oxygen free-radical damage and inflammation.

●Fibromyalgia: particularly related to oxidative stress andheadaches.

●Alzheimer's: mice showed benefit related to oxidativestress and their behaviour improved.

Studies that have shown benefit and need further investiga-tion●Neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases have low-

ered CoQ10.●Parkinsons: daily living was improved in early and mid

stage.●Migraine and cyclical vomiting, particularly in combination

with magnesium citrate and riboflavin (B2); benefits foradults, children and in pregnancy.

●High blood pressure decreased without significant side ef-fects.

●Cancer: some benefit in the cardiotoxicity from somechemotherapies.

SourcesMeat and fish are the richest dietary sources. Vegetable oils arequite rich sources. Parsley is the richest vegetable source, broc-coli, grape, and cauliflower are modest sources. PCSO IVAN TICKNER - PCSOFOR EAST SALTDEAN

Hello, my name is Ivan Tickner and I am the new Police Community Support Officer for East Saltdean and I thought I would like toshare with you my introduction into the role.

On the 23 of January 2012 I had my first day of training atLewes Head Quarters; this is where I would spend the nextseven weeks. The intense training was mainly classroom basedwith a small amount of role play. The time spent trainingseemed to go very quickly and I couldn’t wait to put intopractice everything that I had learnt.

My first day in Peacehaven was a very nerve racking day as Ididn't know exactly what to expect! I was very lucky as I hadalready met my tutor/mentor PCSO Chris Marchant. At first mytime was spent shadowing him and absorbing all of his veryuseful information and guidance. Before working inPeacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean I didn’t reallyknow the area very well but I soon picked that up.

I worked with Chris Marchant for roughly two months and thenI began independent patrol which means I am now trained andcapable to work alone. During my time in the area I have met

many different people from all walks of life and engaged withas many members of the community as possible. I feel thingshave gone very well so far and I have enjoyed playing my partin preventing and dealing with low level crimes and anti-socialbehaviour and am looking forward, with enthusiasm, to thefuture.

Please stop me and say hello when you see me out and aboutand do not hesitate to contact me on Tel: 101 Extension 62055/mobile 07826921132 / email [email protected] I can be of any help.

ROTTINGDEAN CAMERACLUB NEWS

We have had a very successful 2011/12 season with some fascinating guest speakers showing us spectacularexamples of their work and giving us tips about their techniques along the way.

We have had our regular programme of competitionsand some of our new members have had impressivewins. And it hasn't always been the photographer withthe most expensive equipment who has won.

During the summer we have had photo shoots on theWey and Arun Canal, and been guests at a local brewerywhere photos and samples were dually taken.

We are looking forward to next season, which begins onMonday Oct 1st. 7.30pm at the Rottingdean WhitewayCentre.

Beginners and experts alike are most welcome. Pleasejoin us to share our knowledge and skills in a friendlyand informative atmosphere. We aim to have fun alongthe way too.

Our website at http://www.rottcc.co.uk/ carriesinformation about the Club and a selection of some ofthe member’s photographs. And our Secretary, BrianKnight is always pleased to talk to prospective memberson 302605.

Thanks to a generous grant from the National Lottery, the Club has an excellent high definition digital projectorwhich shows our (and perhaps your?) photographs attheir very best on our huge screen.

Not sure? Well come along to one of our meetings andmeet us. I'd like to think that the Club has turned mefrom a snapper into a photographer. Perhaps we can dothe same for you.
