February is the month of love. It is a
great time to celebrate our love for children, spouses, old friends and new.
The cold of winter has threatened to
take away the warmth from our lives.
So we stop and remember the love that warms our hearts. We are reminded
that winter will come to an end. Soon
we will be basking in the warm sun. It
may still be cold on the outside but inside there is a fire that continues to
warm our lives.
This year Ash Wednesday falls on
Valentine’s day. On Ash Wednesday we
are reminded of how cold our lives are
without love. The ashes are created
from the palms of Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday we were excited about how
Jesus has entered our lives. He comes
with joy and celebration. But soon we
face the trials similar to the betrayal of that Thursday. Our lives experience
physical, emotional, and spiritual pain.
That Friday there was a moment of
hopelessness that we still must fight
when we face death. And if it were not
for the resurrection, we would be lost.
The darkness of our lives would
overwhelm us. We would simply be dust awaiting a return to dust. So, we
will take the ashes, mark our lives, and
remember that “… God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we
were still sinners, Christ died for
us.” (Romans 5:8)
This is the love that changes us from a
pile of dirt to a people filled with love and hope. We no longer walk in
darkness but now we walk in love.
When others betray us, we respond
with the grace of Jesus. When we are wounded, we offer the forgiveness we
have received. Many will celebrate a
different kind of love this Valentine’s
Day. They will speak of a love that has boundaries. They will love only when
they are loved. The warmth of their love
is often extinguished by the pain of this
world. But for those who share the
ashes, the love of Jesus is an unchang-
ing remedy for the darkness around us.
We can experience the warmth of fellowship in the middle of the winter
for there is always hope, always faith,
and always love.
Come warm up with us on Ash Wednesday and every Sunday!

THE BOARD OF DEACONS
The New Year is off to a good start! The boards are all busy, planning for upcoming events, our Pastor Dave, Barb, and Steffi are beginning to settle in and we look forward to some exciting new happenings at FBC.
The Deacons are at present-Bob Staulters, chair, Lane Jones, Pat Rogers, Keith Sprenger, and Terry van den Heever. We each have a “flock” of people to minister to. If you don't know for sure who your shepherd is, talk to any one of us and we will gladly help out. At present, you may be asked for your picture. We are updating our directory with Family and Friends info. Please speak to Pat Rogers if you have any questions.
There will be a cleaning, rearranging, throwing out of old supplies in the north hallway. These are Diaconate materials, that have just sat for awhile.
Pastor Dave , with the approval of the board, has some changes he would like to implement over the next 4-6 weeks:
1. Worship hour will be more streamlined
2. We will be enjoying more praise music
3. The greeting time will be eliminated
4. Service will be changed up from week to week
5. The announcements each week will have prayer requests/connection card
6. Present Deacons will serve Communion, a deacon will pray over cup and one over bread
There will be an Ash Wednesday service on February 14, that Pastor Dave will plan.
Maundy Thursday will be held as usual, and this year a Good Friday service will be held from noon-12:45 p.m. We will have an Easter sunrise service.
An installation service for Pastor Dave will be held on Sunday, March 4.

CHURCH MOUSE NURSERY SCHOOL
January is always busy with tours and registration for the 2018—2019 school year, Registration is
now open to the public. Enrollment is going very well. Penguin Day, as always, is a big hit. Many parent volunteers attended, helping guide the children through each “penguin themed” center.
In chapel the children will be learning about Jonah and the Whale, and Friendship, with the story of Jesus welcoming the children. We were so happy to have Pastor Dave visit chapel. He was able to meet and greet all of our students. Pastor Dave found out there were some children who expressed an interest in having a Bible. He ordered Bibles, and to date, 20 parents have requested a Bible for their child.
An Open House for prospective students is scheduled for Saturday, February 3 from 10 a.m.—12 noon. If we need to reschedule because of bad weather, we will move the Open House to the following Saturday, February 10. The children
have been working on special projects to decorate their rooms for this special day. If you know of any families with preschool age children, please pass on this information! Word of mouth is by far our best advertisement.
February brings more discussions about winter weather, dental health, and of course Valentine’s Day. The 3 year old classes will have Friendship Feasts, while the 4 year old classes and the Pre K class will have Valentine’s parties.
Terry van den Heever and her coworker Karen, a hygienist from Dr. Esposito’s office will come to teach the children about dental health. They are a great team, and the children always enjoy their visit. The classes will also talk about President’s Day and Groundhog Day.
The Church Mouse will be closed February 19-23 for winter break.
The teachers have already started evaluating each child. An evaluation will be sent home for the 3 year old students in April, and conferences will be held for the 4 year olds and Pre-K students. The staff will have a Curriculum Planning Day on March 22, and conferences will be held on March 23. There are no regular classes on those days.

THE BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Well this week we will be in February! Where did the time go? Looking back at January we had peo-ple meeting on a Friday night to take the rest of the Christmas decorations down and take them all upstairs. A big thank you goes out to the people who took time out to help me get them put away. A special thanks goes out to Keith Wood who helped me for a couple of days taking decorations down, putting them in bags, marking them with what they were and where they needed to go come November. It was a job well done that will make it easier this Christmas.
Looking forward we are starting up Children’s Worship again in February. Anyone wishing to volunteer please contact me or Sherry Hoffman. It is such a Joy to work with our children while planting seeds of faith.
We are working on some special programs for children. We are looking for someone to be in charge and organize VBS this summer. Please if you feel God’s leading please contact me or anyone on the Christian Ed Board or talk to Pastor Dave.
