MAY 29, 2016 FED BY THE LORD

Jesus’ words “This is my body” and “This cup is the new

covenant in my blood” were only part of his table bless-

ing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in remembrance of me” (1

Corinthians 11:24, 25).

This is the good news of today’s solemnity. Like

the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord.

This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until

the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is

food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek

did when he brought bread and wine to the returning

Abraham.

As children of God’s reign, we are blessed to be

able to receive and share God’s gift. And we do so in the

way most appropriate to our state in life—as parents,

children, husbands, wives, or religious.

May 29 is my 12th anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. I would like to take this short written opportunity to offer a brief reflection about priestly ministry. In all reality the ministry of the Ordained priesthood is all about be-ing a good host at a good meal. It is about making sure all the food is prepared, cooked, flavored, so that it can be savored. It is about ironing and folding the linens, setting the plates, polishing the silver, and chilling and pouring the wine. It is all about good conversation, and support, and healing. It is about walking with, and sometimes carry-ing, and other times being carried. This Sunday is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is one of the great feasts of our Church year. We celebrate the great gift of Jesus Christ, his gift of His Body and Blood. It is the great reason for the life of the Priest to invite all to enter into the Feast, the heavenly wedding banquet. It is a good life. I am sure that I could have performed a million other careers and found success and fulfillment. Maybe I could have found someone and married and raised a family. I am sure I would have found happiness and lived a life of faith. It is funny that is how a vocation works. As much as it is gift, it is a gift that must be chosen. In order to be free to say “Yes!” to a vocation, we must be able to say, “No!” to all the other possibilities. In the midst of serv-ing prime rib, you can’t wonder if you still have time to serve roast chicken. A Christian vocation fully lived is always the most amazing gift received and returned to the Lord our God. With much prayer, discernment, study, and a ton of support I am fortunate to have discovered and been given the opportunity to live mine. I pray and hope the same for all who read these words.

LIVING FAITH - Daily Catholic Devotions booklets for July-August-September will be placed in the church entries in June for you to pick up at $2 request for each one.
