National Regent’sMessage

Helene Shepard, National Regent

Dear Catholic Daughters,

I can truly say that I know what itmeans to be on Cloud 9, because I have been there since I returned from the National Convention and certainlywhen I formally became the National Regent on August20th. It has been an exhilarating, yet humbling, experience. I can’t help but share that joy and gratitudewith each of you. Thank you for all the cards and goodwishes and most of all for your prayers and support.

On September 24th, Timothy Cardinal Dolan,National Chaplain, was the principal celebrant at a Massof Thanksgiving held in my home parish. Father JeffreyMaurer, National Clergy Consultant and many priestsfrom the Archdiocese of New York concelebrated. PastNY State Chaplain Msgr. James Cox and Past NationalChaplain Father Matthew Kuhn also participated in theMass. What a tremendous sign of support. I was honoredwith the presence of the National Board, State Officersfrom New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut,Pennsylvania and Oregon. Past National Regents Rayola,Grace, Anne and Shirley were in attendance. Membersof our Office Staff were there along with my immediatefamily, extended family and dear friends who joined inthe celebration. It could not get any better.

It wasn’t long after this that reality set in. TheNational Quarterly had to be done as well as theproofing of Share magazine. After completion, it was off to Indianapolis for the NCCW Convention with Olgaand I had the honor of bringing greetings from all of theCatholic Daughters of the Americas. It was not straighthome. I then went on to the State Conference in Eugene,Oregon, where I was most welcomed and graciouslyreceived. No, it still wasn’t home yet after that because

I went on to Washington, DC, for Vespers at the St. JohnPaul II Center where the Bishops were collaborating forthe Convocation for Catholic Leaders that will takeplace in Orlando in July 2017. There was a presentationand a lovely reception. I stayed at a Franciscan RetreatCenter. The sister that greeted me knew I was from NewYork as soon as I opened my mouth. She was fromOgdensburg, New York and her cousin is Past NationalDirector Rita Devan. It is a small world. Finally, I wasable to return home and try to create a routine. It didn’thappen. A few days later I was off to Santa Barbara, CA,for the 100th Anniversary of Court Santa Barbara #293. It was a first class event. I am still trying to catch mybreath. As I write this message, I am getting ready toattend and speak at the 100th Anniversary of the StateCourt of Massachusetts. These are wonderful milestonesthat we need to celebrate. So, in addition to the emotionalhigh, I have literally been on Cloud 9 via my many hoursin the air.

By now you have received your “Fun”D Calendars.I am sure you will be generous and joyful in participatingin this fundraiser. Just think you may be a winner!Know that your donation will be used for “the least ofMy brethren.” I would like to thank you in advance foryour continued generosity in helping us fulfill ourMission Statement.

Recently many of our CDA sisters have experienceddisasters in their states. Since the term began we havesent almost $20,000 to the following states from ourDisaster Relief Fund: Louisiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, andNorth Carolina. Please pray for these states. You andyour generosity, make this a reality.

Back To WorkFr. Jeffrey Maurer

National Clergy Consultant

Dear Daughters,As Labor Day dies down and

then school buses begin to roll again,we settle into a period of activities and events in parishes and courts

which “kick it up at notch.” We can often, even the best of us, forget the reason

for the work. As Catholic Daughters and friends we canbecome “Marthas” not “Marys.” As the Lord reminds usin the gospel this past summer however, it is Mary whohas chosen the better part.

Perhaps use the beginning of court meetings for 2-5 minutes of silent prayer where we call to our minds, hearts, and Lord for the grace necessary for the work weresume in our parishes and courts. Sometimes this silentprayer creates and awareness of the presence of Godwhich a speedy Our Father can’t.

You and I know how much the world needs thewitness and the work of the Catholic Daughters but let’smake sure that through prayer and purpose we get “backto work” with the activity of a “Martha” but with themind and heart of a “Mary.”

May God continue to guide us and the work whichwe get back to this year and each year as His children.

Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Jeffrey J. Maurer

March for Life January 2017This year marks the 44th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision by the SupremeCourt which legalized abortion. Several members of the National Board will again beattending the Opening Mass of the Vigil for Life at the Basilica of the National Shrineof the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at 6:30pm andparticipating in the March for Life on Friday January 27th in Washington, DC.

The theme of the March this year is The Power of One. Please join us at the Mass and for the March to show your support for the gift of life. The March for Life Rally is scheduled to begin at 12 noon on the National Mall.We will meet at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, located at the intersection of 12th Street NWand Constitution Ave. NW. On the ground floor of the museum, entering from Constitution Ave. near 10th St. NW, youfind the Atrium Cafe. We plan to meet here at 12:30 pm to warm up a bit before we go out for the March at 1pm.

If you cannot attend the March, please watch the EWTN coverage that day (National Regent Helene Shepard andNational Regent Elect Olga Samaniego are scheduled to be interviewed before the March) and keep all March for Lifepilgrims in your prayers.

Our contributions don’t end there. We joyfullyattended the 30th Annual SOAR Benefit in NewYork City and $10,000 was presented in your nameto the retired religious who are presently facing very difficult financial times. At the last full boardmeeting we approved sending $8,000 to Human Life International. This donation will be used for a pro-life advocacy center.

I also attended a Catholic Relief Servicesreception at the Penn Club in New York City atwhich I presented a $10,000 check in your name toDr. Carolyn Woo, CEO. It is important for you torealize that I am only the messenger. It is each of youwho make these gifts possible. What better time tothink of this than the season of Christmas, when theultimate gift of the Son of God was given to us.

May you continue to share this gift with thosearound you and those in our Circle of Love.

I would like to close with the following Gift List:“Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart, To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.” —Oren Arnold

God bless you.In Unity and Charity,

National ChaplainTimothy Cardinal Dolanwishes all members of the

Catholic Daughters of the Americas a happy and

Holy Christmas Seasonand God’s Blessings

throughout the coming year.

Sherry Nilles, First Vice National RegentNational Leadership Chairman

A new year will soon be here and with thatcomes time for New Years’ Resolutions.

Remember the leadership role you have in the Catholic Daughters of theAmericas as resolutions are made. Listed are six suggestions that can beconsidered to improve leadership in our courts.

1. Consider your strong points and build on them. When thinking of making improvements the best leaders stand out because of their greatstrengths. They were memorable because of something done very well.

2. While working with other people, give them the gift of your undividedattention. They should feel that they are important to you and of value.Make them the focus of attention. Maintain good eye contact and actively listen.

3. Improve your vocabulary by adding new words and phrases, thereforebecoming more interesting and exciting to listen to. Remember the tone of your voice and non-verbal communication as well.

4.Women are paying close attention to your behaviors. You will be settingthe line as to what is acceptable and what will not be acceptable. Courtswill be doing as you do regardless of the wording in the bylaws and Toolsof the Trade.

5. Emotions are contagious. So is your energy level. Having a high positiveenergy level will promote stronger interest and increase the works in yourcourt. Involve others who demonstrate positive energy.

6. Lead effectively by demonstrating care and concern for others. Leadershipis a relational skill that depends on how others react and interact with you.Look for opportunities to show that you care.

Trying to make all six changes at one time can be overwhelming, but start withone or two. When those are mastered, add another one.

Wishing you a blessed and outstanding 2017.

Leadership Resolutions for

God, thank you for a new year. May we all be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our

truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Amen

A BOGO! Christmas and New Year!

Olga Samaniego, National Regent-ElectNational Chairman for Membership

and Court Development

It seems like we just started a new CDA year, and now it’s time for Christmas.I know that each court is very busy gathering itsChristmas donations, completing Christmas projects, and planning for the new year. As you prepare yourgifts for God’s people, may I suggest that each memberremember to offer one more gift—a gift for a woman ofyour parish or community. Offer her the gift of becominga woman of service. Offer her the opportunity to use her gifts and talents. There are many women in ourparishes and in our communities who have never hadthe opportunity to experience the joy that comes from service.

Life is hectic. Many women have lives that are filledwith work that is stressful and draining. Additionally, if a woman no longer has children at home, or elderlyfamily members for whom she is responsible, she may not be experiencing the type of work that feeds her soul orallows her to interact with God’s people. It is also possiblethat a woman may be a woman of individual service—maybe she is a lector or a Eucharistic minister, but she stillmay be looking for a community of women who share herhopes and values. Offer her the gift of sisterhood. I trulybelieve that if you reach out in friendship and invite awoman to your meeting, she will want to be a part of theexciting work that you are doing.

On August 1, we began new BOGO! contest—BringOne; Gain One! If every member would bring in one newmember for the new year, our membership would jump to140,000 by the end of January. It is absolutely possible.Several courts doubled their membership last term, and Idon’t think they did anything extraordinary. What theydid was invite women to see how the court was feeding

the hungry, clothing thepoor; andcomforting thosewho werehurting. Whowouldn’t want tobe a part of that?Invite women to make a difference with you!

I also encourage each state to actively seek outpossibilities for new courts. If you need any courtdevelopment supplies such as priests’ packets, pleasecontact me. We will again have prizes for the states thatinstitute the most courts. And don’t forget—we will againbe awarding the Saint Faustina Court DevelopmentAward to those women who are instrumental ininstituting new courts.

I encourage each court to be active—spend time inprayer and then listen to God together. Let Him directyour actions; I guarantee you—God will keep you busy.Your court will be a court that women will want to join. I also encourage every member to step out in faith and tobe bold. Talk about your work in CDA. Share your joy!Share your excitement, and invite others to share yourexcitement. Your court will be enriched with newmembers, and together you will continue to do greatthings because women listening to God and workingtogether Can Do Anything!

The Biennial State and Territorial Officers’ Workshop will be held July 13-16, 2017, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois.

All State and Territorial Officers: Mark your calendars and save these dates for a vitalevent in the life of the State Court—pray, plan and bond with those that will be workingtogether in the following two years. It is important to come together to learn, share andnetwork with leaders in our organization. Anyone intending to run for a state office shouldalso mark down these dates in their calendar. It is money and time that is well spent.

Save the DateJuly 13 to July 16, 2017

As all members who attended the 56thBiennial National Convention inPittsburgh know, many bylaws wereproposed to be amended. The newrevised bylaws can be purchased fromthe National Office for $3.50, just logon to catholicdaughters.org and clickon the “store” tab or order by mailwith payment in full.

The 2014-2016 National Boardconducted a pilot program for thepurpose of studying the plausibility ofDual Membership.

It was created for members who livedoutside their state for part of the yearand who wanted to be an activemember of a court in the area wherethey were temporarily living. Somemembers who live in the north butwho winter in the south suggested thistrial program. The trial worked verywell, and the ladies were happy beingable to attend activities and vote whenliving outside their court area.

The Bylaw Committee proposed a new bylaw to give the option, inspecial circumstances, for all memberswho would like to be Dual Members. The 2016 Bylaws state, in Article III,Section 2, E (page 3), that “Membersmay hold Dual Membership in two (2)different states; two (2) different citiesin one state; or two (2) courts in onecity if a new court is instituted in theirarea or when a member moves.”

However, there have still been some questions on who can be a Dual Member.

Dual Membership is not designed formembers to join another court in theirarea to influence what is happening inthat court or in order to keep it fromdropping below 15 members. DualMembership will be denied if it is usedfor this purpose.

The purpose for this classification ofmembership was to give members theflexibility to be an active CDA member(in good standing) when living awayfrom their court because they arewinter residents or have moved acrosstown in a big city.

Dual Membership also enablesmembers who have belonged to acourt for many years to maintainmembership in their old court, buthave the convenience of being active ina court much closer to their home. Forexample: a member of a court fortwenty-five years that moves toanother area of the city and lives muchcloser to where another court meetsmay not want to give up her long timeconnection to her old court. As a DualMember, she may maintain membershipin her old court and still join the othercourt closer to home.

Dual Membership requires paymentof dues to both local courts that themember joins. State and National

dues must be paid for them in bothlocal courts.

A member who spends winters orsummers in a location without a CDAcourt is asked to consider starting acourt in that area. As a Dual Member, they can maintain membership in theirhome court while helping to spreadCDA to a new area.

What is Dual Membership?Carolyn Bachmann, National Bylaw Chairman

There are 3 reasons for amember to maintain Dual

Membership:

If a member resides in a differentpart of her state, or resides in adifferent state, for part of the year, she may belong to the courtwhere she permanently residesand also to a court where shetemporarily resides.

If a member belongs to a courtoutside of her parish and a newcourt is instituted in her parish, she may maintain her originalmembership while becoming activein the newly established court.

If a member changes residencewithin in a large city and there is a court in the new area, she may maintain her originalmembership while becoming active in the court now moreconveniently located to her.

Serving theCommunityUnconditionally

Essie Walker National Chairman of Family

Spiritual wellness is most important in anyfamily. Spirituality is a force that helps one to reachbeyond one self to become part of something larger. Asa family unit, taking the time to Pray together deepenstheir interpersonal relationships with other familymembers. A family sharing prayer time enables them toexpress what they are thankful for and to pray for theless fortunate. It can also create family cohesiveness andstrengthen the bond between family members.

Families are spending more quality time togetherto pray and plan family activities. Spending timetogether as a family helps to build a strong familystructure. Within this structure, the families see howmuch they have to be thankful for and look outside of

their family to see what they can do for others. Familiesworking together can accomplish great things.

Due to the devastation in this world today, families are coming to the aid of those in thecommunity and around the world. Families are trulyblessed when they can support programs, withmonetary donations or with their time and talent, tofeed the hungry, clothe the poor and assist those in thecommunity in need of healing and help. Families aremotivated by compassion and love and strive to reflectGod’s unconditional love.

As a family, we need to continue to pray for Godto give us power to do for others in the communityand around the world.

All members should have received our “Fun”D Calendar in the mail during the month of October.

This is a major fundraiser for our organization.

A $20 donation gives you a chance at over 200 drawings throughout the next year.

Please consider participating in this endeavor.

The entry form and donation for this needs to be sent to the Raleigh, NC, PO Box indicated in the mailing.

As always, thank you for your support of CDA.

Then the angel said to her,

“Do not be afraid, Mary, for

you have found favor with God.

Behold, you will conceive in

your womb and bear a son,

and you shall name him Jesus.”

Pope Speaks on Gender andReproductionIn the Joy of Love issuedlast year, Pope Francisprovided clear guidelineson gender ideology andreproductive technologies.As Pope Francis said, somegender ideologyproponents even want to dictate educationalprograms and how children are raised. Be prepared forlegislation on these topics.

“Yet another challenge is posed by the various forms ofan ideology of gender that ‘denies the difference andreciprocity in nature of a man and a woman andenvisages a society without sexual differences, therebyeliminating the anthropological basis of the family. Thisideology leads to educational programs and legislativeenactments that promote a personal identity andemotional intimacy radically separated from thebiological difference between male and female.Consequently, human identity becomes the choice ofthe individual, one which can also change over time.’It is a source of concern that some ideologies of thissort, which seek to respond to what are at timesunderstandable aspirations, manage to assertthemselves as absolute and unquestionable, evendictating how children should be raised. It needs to beemphasized that ‘biological sex and the socio-culturalrole of sex (gender) can be distinguished but notseparated.’ On the other hand, ‘the technologicalrevolution in the field of human procreation hasintroduced the ability to manipulate the reproductiveact, making it independent of the sexual relationshipbetween a man and a woman. In this way, human lifeand parenthood have become modular andseparable realities, subject mainly to the wishes ofindividuals or couples.’ It is one thing to beunderstanding of human weakness and thecomplexities of life, and another to accept ideologiesthat attempt to sunder what are inseparable aspects ofreality. Let us not fall into the sin of trying to replace theCreator. We are creatures, and not omnipotent.Creation is prior to us and must be received as a gift. Atthe same time, we are called to protect our humanity,and this means, in the first place, accepting it andrespecting it as it was created.” (Paragraph 56)

Quick Reflection from theMarriage Reality Movement: Why the term Marriage Reality? Some people ask: Why use the term “marriage reality”?We often struggle with how to distinguish the truth about marriage from the way it is beingchanged in law.

Some use the term natural marriage, but this impliesthere is "unnatural marriage." It is often interpretedas being particularly offensive by some, leads toconflict, and ends dialogue.

The term “traditional marriage” has its problems toobecause it implies that marriage is simply a matter of human tradition—something created by humans.We know that’s not true from Scripture and theCatechism. It also contributes to the confusion byimplying that marriage between a man and awoman should be restored just because it hasalways been that way through history. Thatundermines the argument and conflicts with ourunderstanding of marriage.

After a lot of thought and discussion with ourgrassroots marriage leaders, we settled on the term“marriage reality,” (not to be confused with“marriage equality”). It more accurately expresseshow the Catechism describes marriage. God himselfis the author of marriage; it’s integral to his plan forcreation, and creation is reality.

Using the term marriage reality provokes. People askwhat’s "”marriage reality?” Who says it’s reality?

Marriage unites a man and a woman with eachother and any children born from their union. That iswhat marriage does and that’s what it is. It’s a factthat can only be recognized and never changed.

The phrase “any children born from their unionrecognizes not all married men and women havechildren, but every child has a mother and a father. In reality marriage is the only institution that uniteschildren with their moms and dads

Christ is all AroundUs

A Christmas Prayer ServiceMaterials: A small table on which to place the symbols—may be decorated with a small crecheor a small Christmas tree—soft Christmas music to play in the background, a poinsettia, a candle,a bell, a sprig of mistletoe, a sprig of holly, a small basket of fruit. (Materials may be artificial.)

Member 1: I bring the music of Christmas. (Begin to playmusic softly.) The carols tell the important story ofChristmas. We sing as the angels sang that night long ago toannounce the Good News that Jesus Christ is born!

Member 2: I bring a poinsettia. The legend of the poinsettiatells of a girl who was too poor to provide a gift for thecelebration of Jesus' birthday and who was inspired by anangel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them infront of the church altar. Crimson blossoms sprouted fromthe weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. The star-shaped leaf pattern symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, andthe red color represents the blood sacrifice of thecrucifixion.

Member 3: I bring a Christmas candle. The candle and allthe lights of Christmas remind us of Christ who says, "I amthe light of the world. No follower of mine shall ever walk indarkness; no, he shall possess the light of life." (John 8:12) Weimitate Him by being light to others and by showing themthe way to Christ.

Member 4: I bring a Christmas bell. Bells represent the joyof Christmas. The bells ring out from each church steeplecalling us to worship the Son of God! The bell alsosymbolizes how the Lord gently calls the lost back to Himand guides us toward our everlasting home.

Member 5: I bring mistletoe. Mistletoe cannot live apartfrom the tree that supports it. It is totally dependent. Itreminds us that the love of God sustains us and that apartfrom Him we cannot survive.

Member 6: I bring a sprig of holly. Holly representsimmortality. Immortality is a gift God has granted to eachhuman soul. We strive to live now so as to live with Himeternally.

Member 7: I bring a fruit basket. Fruit symbolizes the workof the Holy Spirit in our lives. The activities of our court arethe fruit of listening to the Spirit of God and of doing whatHe calls us to do.

Leader: We give thanks that we are together to celebrate this beautiful Christmas season. Even during this holy time ofthe year, we can be unaware of the messages with which the Lord surrounds us. We can be so caught up in preparingand decorating for Christmas that we can miss all that the decorations of Christmas represent. Let us take time tonight toremember together.

All: Lord, help us not to get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas. Never let us look at the decorations ofChristmas and not see you. Let us not become complacent or jaded about Christmas. Let us remember you in everydecoration that we place. Let us look at the lights and decorations with joy and the excitement that we had as children.Father, we are grateful for the greatest gift of Christmas—the gift of your Son! Let us proclaim with joy on Christmasmorning and every day of our lives that Jesus Christ is born! Amen
