People’s DesirePERSPECTIVES

Today, the 10th waning day ofTazaungmon, 1371 ME, is the 89th anniversaryof National Day of the Union of Myanmar.

It was on this day 89 years ago that acampaign was launched for the emergence of anew education system compatible with socio-eco-nomic life of Myanmar people. The national cam-paign was born out of Myanmar people’s defi-ance against the colonialists’ oppressive rule overtheir race, language and religion and one-sidedoppression of their patriotism.

It was the very first national movementduring the colonialist occupation of Myanmarand served as a guiding light in our struggle forindependence. This national movement based onnational spirit and patriotism eventually led tothe regaining of independence. Therefore, it ischronicled in the history of Myanmar independ-ence struggle.

The colonialists passed the Yangon Uni-versity Act on 1 December, 1920, with the objectof prolonging their rule. Myanmar patrioticyouths opposed the act as it limited their access tohigher education. Opposition to colonialists anddemand for improved university education sys-tem led to the national movement.

The national movement was not onlyagainst the colonial education system but alsoagainst the oppressive colonial rule. The 10thwaning day of Tazaungmon, 1282 ME, was theday the movement started. Therefore, it was des-ignated as National Day and has been observedevery year.

History has proved that Myanmar peopleregained their country’s independent status andtheir independent life on account of their nationalspirit and patriotism. Therefore, it is necessaryfor all national races to always strive for perpetu-ation of national independence and sovereigntyby further cementing national unity in accord-ance with the essence of National Day.

The center of the ragged storm was expected to cross the coast near Mobile,Alabama, early on Tuesday.

At one time a Category 2 hurricane, Ida’s threat eased as winds dropped to 65miles per hour (100 km per hour). Ida was forecast to weaken quickly as it movedinland, turning east over northern Florida.

A US Coast Guard helicopter plucked two workers from a storm-damaged oilrig south of New Orleans. Ida is blamed for 124 flood and mudslide deaths in ElSalvador.

BOSTON, 10 Nov—USscientists say they’ve dis-covered why cholera out-breaks that occur once ayear in Africa and LatinAmerica occur twice ayear in Bangladesh.

Cholera is an acute di-arrheal disease caused bythe bacterium Vibriocholerae, scientists said.

But they have tried, with-out much success, to deter-mine the cause of theunique dual outbreaks inBangladesh.

Researchers from TuftsUniversity, led by Profes-sor Shafiqul Islam, saythey have found a link be-tween cholera and fluctu-ating water levels in theregion’s three principalrivers — the Ganges,Brahmaputra and Meghna.

“What we are establish-ing is a way to predictcholera outbreaks two tothree months in advance,”Islam said. “It’s not amicrobiological explana-tion. The key is the riverdischarge and regional cli-mate.”

The study’s findings arereported in the 10 Oct is-sue of the journal Geo-physical Research Letters.

TOKYO, 10 Nov—Thedeepening debate over thefuture of a major USMarine base on the south-ern Japanese island ofOkinawa has opened abroad rift in Washington’smost important alliance inAsia ahead of PresidentBarack Obama’s visit tothe region this week.

For decades, it has beena rallying point forOkinawans frustrated bythe realities of sharingtheir tiny island with tensof thousands of Americantroops. So when Tokyoand Washington agreedthree years ago to moveMarine Corps Air Station

Futenma to a lesscrowded place — theproduct of nearly 12 yearsof talks — the deal washailed as a huge break-through.

Then Japan got a newgovernment.

Now, with Obama visi-ting on Friday and Satur-day, Japan’s fledgling lib-eral Prime Minister YukioHatoyama has put theplan on hold — and thedebate about the future ofFutenma and its nearly4,000 Marines is fast be-coming a major test oftheir countries’ alliance.

It’s almost certain thatHatoyama and Obama

To project unity, thetwo leaders will likely re-affirm the importance oftheir alliance, andHatoyama will highlightnew aid for Afghanistan, given as his governmentplans to end a navalrefueling mission in theIndian Ocean to supportUS-led forces. Vinegars apossible risk to kids

CHARLOTTESVILLE, 10 Nov — The EnvironmentalHealth Sciences organization said on Monday that USchildren could be at risk by consuming certain vin-egars containing lead. The journalism organization saidon its Environmental Health News Web site that, ac-cording to a new analysis, lead found in balsamic andother red wine vinegars could significantly increase achild’s lead level.

Levels of the potent neurotoxin in a child couldbe raised by more than 30 percent if the child con-sumes a tablespoon daily of those vinegars, Environ-mental Health Sciences said. Unidentified vinegar in-dustry representatives insist their products are safe toconsume, pointing out that lead can be found in a va-riety of food products.

Scientific studies indicate that a child can experi-ence learning disorders or a diminished IQ from hav-ing low levels of lead in the body. Increased lead lev-els in adults have been known to impact individuals’cardiovascular and immune systems, along with theirkidneys. Environmental Health Services said a list ofvinegars with lower lead levels is available onenvironmentalhealthnews.org.—Internet

SALINAS, 10 Nov —Bottlenose dolphins arelikely responsible for thegrowing number of deadporpoises appearing onCalifornia beaches, ma-rine biologists said.

“We saw severe beat-ings,” Maldini said. “Itwas a mob of dolphins.”

The severity of thewildlife attack would ex-plain the broken bonesand internal bleedingsuffered by other deadporpoises found on the

GENEVA, 10 Nov—The World Health Organization(WHO) called for girls’ and women’s healthcare re-form on Monday in Geneva.

A WHO report titled “Women and health: today’sevidence tomorrow’s agenda” used current data totrack the disparities in female health from newbornsto adults over 60 years of age.

“If women are denied a chance to develop their fullhuman potential, including their potential to leadhealthier and at least somewhat happier lives, is soci-ety as a whole really healthy?” asked WHO Director-general Dr Margaret Chan.

The report states that while women compose thebulk of health care providers, their own health needsoften go unmet in the areas of sexual violence, cervi-cal cancer screening and mental health. In addition, lower socio-economic status, which translates to lackof access to education, decision-making and income, limits women’s ability to protect their own health, thestudy said.

“We will not see significant progress as long aswomen are regarded as second-class citizens in somany parts of the world,” Dr Chan said, adding that“these unequal power relations translate into unequalaccess to health care and unequal control over healthresources.”—Xinhua

MELBOURNE, 10 Nov—US scientists say they havedetermined why coralsspawn for just a few nightsin some locations, but else-where the spawning con-tinues for several months.

It’s long been knowncorals synchronize theirrelease of eggs and sperminto the water, but scien-tists were unsure how andwhy they did so.

Florida Institute of Tech-nology Professor Robert

van Woesik says he’s de-termined corals spawnwhen regional wind fieldsare light. When it is calmthe eggs and sperm havethe best chance to unitebefore they are dispersed.

Corals off the coast ofKenya have months oflight winds so they can re-produce for much of theyear, Woesik said. On theGreat Barrier Reef in Aus-tralia, calm weather isshort-lived and the coral

reproductive season isbrief.

Woesik said his findingsare critically important foreffective reef conserva-tion.

“Coral reproduction is avery local event,” Woesiksaid. “This means localconservation efforts willmaximize reproductivesuccess and give reef sys-tems a chance to adapt toglobal climate change.”

Cameroon Lions roar back underFrench magician

JOHANNESBURG, 10 Nov—Cameroon football supporters were con-templating the unthinkable just two months ago - a second consecu-tive World Cup without their national team.

The country that had qualified a record five times from Africa werebottom of Group 1 in the final elimination phase for the 2010 tourna-ment in South Africa.

Minnows Gabon had six points after two rounds, shock 2006 quali-fiers Togo four and Morocco and Cameroon one each with the ‘In-domitable Lions’ last on goals scored.

A 1-0 away defeat by Togo was bad enough, but being held goal-less by serial poor travellers Morocco before 50,000 Camerooniansin Yaounde was hard to stomach and veteran German coach Otto Pfisterquit soon after.
