Playing it safe is not divine. I tell you simply what I believe. Love is the wildest, choicest door into the Passion. God saved the world not by sitting up in heaven and issuing antiseptic directives but by becoming human and vulnerable, in Jesus. He died, not because he despised the earth but because he loved it as a man loves it—out of all proportion and sense. And when he rose again, He stood up like a man indeed: with glorious scars—and with flesh, bones, and all things appertaining to the perfection of human nature. We can, you see, take it with us. It will be precisely because we loved Jerusalem enough to bear it in our bones that its textures will ascend when we rise; it will be because our eyes have relished the earth that the color of its countries will compel our hearts forever. The bread and the pastry, the cheese, the wine and the songs go into the Supper of the Lamb because we do: It is our love that brings the city home. It is, I grant you, an incautious and extravagant hope. But in such a place as this—in a world that so regularly winds our clocks and breaks our hearts, that laughs at caution and cries from every corner for extravagation—only outlandish hopes can make themselves at home.

• First, please relax and enjoy your time here. Jesus knows that children tend to wiggle and squawk a bit, so please don’t feel embarrassed by it. Your children are welcome at St. John.

• To make it a bit easier on your family, please dare to sit toward the front where your children can easily see the procession, note the colors, hear the bells, smell the fire, watch the pastors, wonder about those heads on the lectern and embrace the action at the altar. What Jesus does here promises to engage them.

• As we go, softly explain the Liturgy to your children, encouraging them to chime in on

their parts: Amen! Lord have mercy! And with your spirit! I believe! Our Father! All of that belongs to them too.

• Be sure to sing and say and pray your parts too as you stand and kneel and sit. Your children learn by following your lead.

• If you and your child must leave, please hurry back. We want your children here so much that we didn’t build a nursery in our new space. Like Jesus, we want your children in the Liturgy, not out.

• If you need a little help, just ask. There are lots of folks here who will lend you a hand.

Please know that while you are caring for your children, the rest of us will be rejoicing in Jesus’ words, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Luke 18:16). We know that your children are a gift to the Church, so we will do our best to welcome, smile, encourage, help and bless you all. Welcome to St. John!

It is the hour of Terce—nine o’clock—and the basilica is crowded with the faithful. The sun is pouring in its brightest beams; and who has not felt the charm of an Easter sun? The pavement is strewn with flowers. Above the glittering mosaics of the apse, the wall is covered with rich tapestry. Festoons hang from the sanctuary arch to the pillars of the nave and aisles. Lamps, fed with the purest oil and suspended from the ciborium (or canopy), are burning around the altar. The paschal candle, which has been ceaselessly burning since last night, stands on its marble pillar; its bright flame attracts every eye, and the perfumes, wherewith its wick is saturated, fill the sacred edifice with a delicious fragrance. But by far the most interesting object is the group of the neophytes, clad in their white garments, like the angels that appeared at the sepulchre. They are the living expression of the mystery of our Lord’s resurrection. Yesterday they were dead, by sin; now they are living, by that new life which is the fruit of Jesus’ victory over death.

The Lord’s Supper is joyfully received here today. At the altar, our Lord Jesus Christ delivers His true body and blood into our mouths. His body and blood forgives our sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. All members of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod have publicly confessed this sacred gift and its blessings, and so are encouraged to commune. Other guests wishing to join our confession and receive this Holy Sacrament are asked to meet with a pastor in the weeks before communing for the first time. Pew PouchesEach Sunday your child may pick up a pew pouch from the top baskets located in the Narthex. Please note each pew pouch design holds a different title book and copies of the Children’s Worship Bulletin designed especially for school-age children. Return the pouch and its contents to the bottom baskets in the Narthex at the end of the service. This way the pouches will be clean and ready for the next Sunday’s services. Please be aware the pew pouches are not age appropriate for children younger than age 3.

NurseryWe have an attended nursery for children birth through age 3 on Sundays during the 10:00 a.m. education hour. “The Ark” is located off The Commons.
