As previous owners of The Mail Box Store, we would like to thank you for the support you have given to us over the last seven and a half years. It has been a pleasure to get to know so many of you and share some of your ups and downs. We have rejoiced in your happy times and hope that we were able to be of some comfort when times were not so good.

It was a very hard decision for us to sell the store, but opportunities that became available made it seem the right time to do it. By now, we hope you have had the chance to come in and meet the new owner, Catherine Allen. She is doing a great job and is there to continue providing service to you. Her associate in the store is Paige Hamlin.

Again, thank you for all the good memories that we are taking with us as we start another chapter in our lives. We wish you good health and much happiness! ~ Barbara Heckel and Joey Sandlin

A Major Honor Flight

On May 7th, Major Roger Zwieg (Freedom Plaza), USAF, veteran of the Korean War, joined Veterans from across the country on Honor Flight Mission 37 to Washington DC. He was escorted by his grandson, Brian Kleinschmidt. When the plane landed in Baltimore they were surprised by grandson, Andy Kleinschmidt, and great grand daughter, Gracie, who joined the entourage. Honor Flight is dedicated to trans-porting United States military veterans to Washington, DC to visit all of the memorials and monuments. On the flight home, Veterans were surprised by Mail Call, a special delivery of letters and cards from family, friends, neighbors and well-wishers from around the country expressing their appreciation and thanks to the Veterans for their service to our country.

Major Zwieg reported that the highlights of his day, in addition to spending time in our Nation’s Capitol with his grandsons and great-grand daughter, were Mail Call and the sur-prise celebration by hundreds of people who welcomed their heroes home. Roger (former resident of Fairway Palms) was met at the airport by daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Kevin Kleinschmidt (La Paloma), and Roger’s wife, Ginny. It was a very long day, but one that Major Roger Zwieg will never forget!

Major Roger Zwieg flanked by the Bomber Girls

Major Roger Zwieg, and his escort, Grandson, Brian Kleinschmidt, were met by Roger’s family (wife Ginny; daughter, Ellen; and

son-in-law, Kevin, upon arrival back home.

From your neighbors ~

Just a quick reminder that individuals under the age of 14 are not allowed to drive golf carts. Granted, it’s a ton of fun for the kiddies, but it’s really not safe, and according to State law, it’s illegal.

Farewell A final goodbye to residents.

Carol Couture, a former resident of LaPaloma, and, most recently, of Fairway Palms, passed away peace-fully, surrounded by loved ones in March. Carol was the favorite hairdresser for a number of residents, a loving and caring person and will be missed.

Glen Dappen (LaPaloma) had been very sick and passed away in May. Glen will be missed and is survived by his dear wife, Judy, six children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our heartfelt condolences to the entire Dappen and family.

And, also in May, Gib Larson (LaPaloma), passed away after battling cancer. He was an avid golfer and loved to fish. Gib will be missed by many. Our sincere condolences to his dear wife, Sande, and family.

May our dear neighbor friends rest in His Love and Eternal Peace

The antiquated sprinkler system on Cypress Village Boulevard is now a thing of the past ~ the system is now completely updated with the newest technology available, on one controller, to be more effi-cient with improvement in water usage. In 2018-2019, many of the islands on Cypress Village Boulevard and all of the islands on Upper Creek Drive have been replenished with sod and new plants. Remaining islands will soon be replen-ished as well. New LED lighting and fixtures illuminating all trees on both sides of the front entrance at Cypress Village Boulevard/SR674 and the monument area is planned. This project has begun with the monument being repainted.

Community Security Committee Update We are happy to report that all is quiet, EXCEPT: In the month of May, the Sheriff’s Office informed us that two reports were taken for unlocked vehicle burglaries. Both burglaries occurred on the same night/morning: one was in Ventana and one was in Villa d’Este. Disconcerting that not only were the vehicle doors unlocked, but that the firearms in the unlocked vehicles were stolen. Deputy Jeff Merry and the Security Committee’s only message at this time is a REMINDER to all residents: Please lock your vehicle(s) doors and please do not leave valuables in the vehicles.

Meeting held on May 9th was the second workshop in this process. Here is a summary:

Presentation Outline Project Status Community Input FDOT Coordination Recommended Mobility Improvements Next Steps Project Status/Community Input The tasks that have been completed with community input were reviewed (see Winter 2019 NewsLink). Hillsborough County/FDOT Coordination Resurfacing Sun City Center Boulevard from Commercial Center Drive to US301: under construction 2018-2020, in-cludes high-visibility crosswalks and a 5-foot sidewalk on northside of SR674. Coordination on recommended improve-ments: golf cart crossings and multi-use paths. Recommended/Proposed Mobility Improvements Pertaining to our immediate community area:

Cypress Village Boulevard: A dedicated golf cart lane for north and south on the Boulevard from Upper Creek Drive to 19

th Avenue NE, thus reduc-

ing two-car lane northbound and southbound to one-lane car lane and one-lane golf cart lane; and on the Boulevard from the Home Depot plaza to Upper Creek Drive, a shared use lane (“Share the Road” signage). Speed limit would be re-quired to be reduced from 35MPH to 30MPH. Pedestrian crosswalks at Upper Creek Drive, Cypress Creek Golf Club and Ventana Drive with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), crosswalk warning signage and lighting. “No Golf Carts” signage at intersection of SR 674 and Cypress Village Boulevard/33

rd Street.

SR 674: A multi-use path on northside from Kings Boulevard to Commercial Center Drive/Cypress Village Boulevard. Seasonal signal timing adjustments.

Cortaro Drive: Golf cart traffic crossing at SR 674 and Cortaro Drive intersection (lower the speed on Cortaro Drive from 35MPH to 30MHP to accommodate requirement for golf cart traffic).

19th Avenue NE:

Multi-use path on 19th Avenue NE.

Upper Creek Drive: Improvements made to golf cart paths on Upper Creek Drive. All above proposals require further studies by County/FDOT, including golf-cart-legal roads in LaPaloma, Montero and Ventana. As Villa d’Este and Fairway Palms roads are private, they are already golf-cart-legal.

Outcome of Recommended Implementation “Reduced conflict and risk reduction between vehicles, pedestrians and golf carts. Enhanced mobility alternatives on new and existing facilities. Improved multi-use network connections to residences, businesses and recreation”. Next Steps Mobility Study: Final mobility concepts late June 2019 Mobility plan report July 2019

Concept Implementation: Agency coordination Fall 2019 Concept design and construction 2020-2023

Hurricane Season officially started on June 1st

Please see suggested Hurricane Survival Kit List on next page

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season in review: The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season will be remembered most for hurricanes Florence and Michael, which caused significant damage in the southeastern United States (Florida’s panhandle). In total, the season pro-duced 15 named storms, including 8 hurricanes of which 2 were “major” (Category 3, 4 or 5). An average season has 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. For the 4th consecutive year, hurricane activity began prior to the official June 1 st start of the season, with Tropical Storm Alberto forming on May 25 th. Alberto made landfall in northern Florida and traveled as far north as the Great Lakes as a tropical depression. A record 7 named storms (Alberto, Beryl, Debby, Ernesto, Joyce, Leslie and Oscar) were classified as sub-tropical at some point. The previous record of 5 subtropical storms occurred in 1969. A subtropical storm is a named storm that has tropical and non-tropical characteristics. All subtropical storms this season eventually transitioned into a tropical storm, with 3 (Beryl, Leslie and Oscar) eventually becoming hurricanes. The 2018 hurricane season was the 1 st since 2008 to have 4 named storms active at the same time (Florence, Helene, Isaac and Joyce). Hurricane Florence caused catastrophic flooding in portions of North and South Carolina. Several river forecast locations in the Carolinas approached or broke their record flood level in the days and weeks following the hurricane. It took 2 to 3 weeks for many river locations to fall below flood stage, and the final river crested 1 month after Florence made landfall. Hurricane Michael, at a Category 5 intensity, was the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Florida panhandle. It was the 3 rd most intense hurricane to make landfall in the continental United States on record in terms of central pressure (919 mb) and the 4th strongest in terms of maximum sustained winds (155 mph). For 2019, NOAA predicts a likely range of 9 to 15 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 4 to 8 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with 70% confidence. An average hurri-cane season produces 12 named storms, of which 6 become hurricanes, including 3 major hurricanes. “Preparing ahead of a disaster is the responsibility of all levels of government, the private sector, and the public," said Daniel Kaniewski, Ph.D., FEMA deputy administrator for resilience. “It only takes one event to devastate a community, so now is the time to prepare! Do you have cash on hand? Do you have adequate insurance, including flood insurance? Does your family have communication and evacu-ation plans? Stay tuned to your local news and download the FEMA app to get alerts, and make sure you heed any warnings issued by local officials.”

Building a hurricane survival kit is a lot like packing for a wilderness camping trip. Worst case scenario, you may need to be able to survive for several days on your own without any outside assistance.

Store your supplies and gear in a large plastic tote, something that is durable and easily transportable. A cooler with wheels is another good option. Once you unpack your supplies, you have a place to store fresh food if you are lucky enough to find some ice.

You can live for weeks without food, but only a few days without water, so store at least a gallon a day per person. In an emergency, it could take several days to get help, so plan accordingly. Water purification tablets and/or a water filter, will help extend your supply. Electrolyte solution and/or powdered sports drink take up little space and can be a life- saver in hot, humid conditions.

Pack freeze-dried or canned food, enough for three days. Dense, high-calorie items are the best choice. A camp stove with extra propane will extend your menu options. Don’t forget a manual can opener. A mess kit, plastic eating utensils and a lightweight camp cook set are great if you have them.

Communication is key in any emergency situation, so pack a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. If possible, get one with a NOAA Weather Radio option. Make sure you have extra batteries. Get a waterproof case for your cell phone and a solar charger. Standard camping equipment, including a flashlight and/or lantern, a signal whistle and mirror, a first aid kit and water-proof matches are also critical. If you take prescription medicine, have an extra month’s supply, at least. You’ll also need insect repellent and sunscreen. Common household items, such as moist wipes and hand sanitizer, will help with personal hygiene. Paper towels and toilet paper will also prove useful. Other items, including plastic garbage bags, drop cloths, mosquito netting, duct tape and light line and rope can be used to make an emergency shelter if the need arises. Make sure you place changes of clothes in a sealed, plastic bag. Include rain gear, and something warm, such as a hood-ed sweatshirt, in case you find yourself in an air-conditioned shelter. An inflatable mattress, lightweight blankets and/or a sleeping bag and a pillow will make your stay more comfortable. Bring along a small day pack in case you find your-self walking for supplies.
