Look out for our annual FilmFestival which runs from 15 –28 January. This year wefeature some extraordinaryfilms, many of which reflectsome of the problems we faceas part of a global community.

We also continue with ourever-expanding popularprogramme of live broadcastevents and, we feature all themajor new cinema releases foryou to enjoy, with some greattitles to see as the Awardsseason approaches too.

AMY STERLY THE SOUND OF READINGAmy Sterly is currently exploring theworld of books and reading; what itmeans to move away from thosebeautiful and physical objects, fromthe visual beauty to the sounds, thesmells and the textures that are lost:“The tactile nature of books creates asensual response that surpassesreactions to digital equivalents”.

This exhibition will include aninstallation that considers theseideas, alongside a series of printsand a performance of the 'SoundBook Project' at the opening event.

Opening event 16:00 on Saturday 30January, join us for a freeperformance – all are welcome!

This delightful Frederick Ashtondouble bill opens with his setting ofRachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on aTheme of Paganini, using the music’sdark turbulence and brilliance toinspire some of his most thrillingchoreography. Witty, impassionedand sublime this ballet was thepinnacle of Ashton’s romantic style.

The second half of the programmefeatures Ashton’s delicate, deceptivelycomic The Two Pigeons - a work rarelyperformed and a real treat for balletfans everywhere.

La traviata is regarded as one ofVerdi’s finest operas, and RichardEyre’s traditional staging, is one ofThe Royal Opera’s most popularproductions. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesanVioletta Valéry, one of opera’sgreatest heroines, based on the reallife courtesan Marie Duplessis, whodied in 1847 aged just 23. In thisrevival, Violetta is sung by Russiansoprano Venera Gimadieva in herdebut with The Royal Opera, followingher successful appearance as Violettaat the Glyndebourne Festival.

Twelfth Day are fiddle player CatrionaPrice and harpist Esther Swift fromOrkney and the Scottish Borders. Theyboth sing, often in unison, creating a newvoice that is neither one nor the other.They have recently released an EP calledShell Story which is a sister record to lastyear’s album The Devil Makes Three.
