The theme this year is “Explore the Possibilities,” which encourages older adults to consider all the ways they can build personal wellness. There are often many more opportunities than we realize!

Touchmark focuses on promoting healthy, active aging throughout the year by incorporating the seven dimensions of wellness into our regular calendar of events and activities.

At the end of this month, we’ll be hosting a week of different events designed to help support this theme and help residents and guests discover the possibilities for active aging right in their own community.

Focus on physical wellness during Healthy Aging Month As we age, there is a misconception that we need to slow down and take it easy—but these sentiments are exactly what can lead to diminished strength and restricted movement. No matter your age, physical activity is essential to maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Staying active and making our physical selves a priority can help sustain physical abilities for longer, allowing us to continue doing the things we love.

Any physical exercise is better than nothing, but for the most effective results, it’s best to incorporate a variety of activities that work on building endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. This varied approach provides more comprehensive benefits and can positively enhance quality of life—from the simplest everyday activities to a reduced risk of serious injury.

• Endurance activities include brisk walking, jogging, or swimming.

• Muscle strengthening may include lifting weights, using resistance bands, or simply using your body’s own resistance for pushups, lunges, and other exercises.

• Balance exercises include tai chi and yoga.

• Increasing flexibility can be as simple as daily stretching to stay limber.

In the spirit of focusing on building healthy aging habits, take the time to consider which physical activities best suit your interests and abilities, and make exercise a priority in your life. The boundless positive results may surprise you!
