MacGregor Signs Jack Nicklausfor Its Advisory Staff

Jack Nicklaus, possibly the most widely dis-cussed amateur who ever played golf and a prosince early last Nov., recently signed a contractwith the Brunswick Corp. to serve as a Mac-Gregor golf dive staff member. Jack's record inthe last three or four years is familiar to justabout everyone interested in golf. He has twoUSGA Amateur titles to his credit, won the1961 National Intercollegiate Championship, and actually had fewer strokes in the combined1960 and 1961 Opens than any other player al-though he had to settle for the runnerup spotthe former year and for a fourth-place tie lastyear. He also fared well in the last two Mas-ters and probably reached the height of hisyoung career in the World Amateur at Merionin 1960 when he shot a sensational 269.Nicklaus learned a good deal about golf fromJack Grout, former pro at Scioto in Columbus,0., who started tutoring him at the age of II.Young Nichlaus attended Ohio State U. wherehe majored in insurance and has a thriving in-surance business in and around Columbus. Helaunched his pro career in Jan. in the Los An-gles Open and squeezed into the money, but didbetter at San Diego and in the Crosby.

Former Supt. Invents Devicefor Repairing Ball Marks

Mark-A-Way, a device for repairing ballmarks, is being marketed by Mar-Al-Products Co.,1317 Nelson Way,Sunnyvale, Calif. Op-erated from a standingposition, it is 40-ins.high and its two lever-operated forks lift ballmarks by pressing themagainst a flat metalplate. Prototype modelsof Mark-A-Way havebeen used successfullyon two Calif. coursesfor four years. The de-vice was invented byManuel T. Coelho, former supt. at Menlo CC,Redwood City, Calif., who was in the golf busi-ness from 1920 until 1954. Mark-A-Way is de-signed for the maintenance dept. but a smaller, lighter model is being planned for golfers.

Bill Lyons Tells of Successwith Soil-Set Mulch

When Bill Lyons, supt. at Firestone CC,Akron, 0., wanted to expand the club's "front

lawn" for the American Classic last summer hemade a quick combination sodding and plant-ing of Merion blue and then· sprayed with

Bill Lyons and his "front lawn."

Soil-Set, a special latex base mulch, and gotexcellent results. It didn't make the grass growovernight, but the green liquid made it appearthat it did. Soil-Set, produced by Alco Oil& Chemical Corp., Trenton ave. and Williamst., Philadelphia 34, doesn't blow away, butgives a holding action to newly seeded' areasand then decomposes and washes into the soil.A gal. of the product dissolved in 10 gals. ofwater is recommended by Lyons.
