How to get caught in the “Pilot Trap”:

Management pushing for more users and PBX replacement

Users complaining

about quality

Page 20: Three Steps Towards Lync Nirvana - AudioCodes€¦ · Lync Nirvana Diane Myers Principal Analyst, VoIP, UC and IMS Nimrod Borovsky VP Unified Communications, AudioCodes. Defining

The Problem

Increased use of converged voice and data applications introduces new challenges to

enterprise data networks

Most networks were designed with data SLA’s in mind, not accounting for the real-time

nature of high quality VoIP

VoIP traffic consists of many small packets and can result in increased traffic up to six times

more demanding than most other types of data traffic

Router and firewall have been provisioned for data, not voice

Too often, network analysis is performed as a post-mortem activity, only after something

is not working properly

70%(!) of escalations during initial rollout were caused by network issues

BOTTOM LINE: Inadequate planning results in increased post-deployment

costs and poor user experience

Page 21: Three Steps Towards Lync Nirvana - AudioCodes€¦ · Lync Nirvana Diane Myers Principal Analyst, VoIP, UC and IMS Nimrod Borovsky VP Unified Communications, AudioCodes. Defining

The Solution

Proactive, pre-deployment analysis of the network

readiness for VoIP during the planning phase of rolling out a

VoIP-based application

Perform a voice quality analysis on your existing network

Test network capacity limits for voice traffic (e.g. peak hours)

Test voice traffic affect on data traffic

Test voice quality across both LAN and WAN (multiple sites and remote users)

Determine whether your network is ready for voice or whether

changes/upgrades are required prior to rollout

Page 22: Three Steps Towards Lync Nirvana - AudioCodes€¦ · Lync Nirvana Diane Myers Principal Analyst, VoIP, UC and IMS Nimrod Borovsky VP Unified Communications, AudioCodes. Defining

The Benefits

Gain confidence that including voice traffic on the existing data network

provides the required voice quality

Verify the data network readiness to carry the anticipated peak-hour call

volume

Ensure that the include of voice traffic will not adversely affect data delivery

Trust that the inclusion of voice traffic across multiple sites and remote users

can provide the required voice quality

Minimize total cost and risk by determining the best approach prior to rollout

of voice within your data network

Guarantee your organization goals are met

Page 23: Three Steps Towards Lync Nirvana - AudioCodes€¦ · Lync Nirvana Diane Myers Principal Analyst, VoIP, UC and IMS Nimrod Borovsky VP Unified Communications, AudioCodes. Defining

The Process

1. Plan the analysis with the IT organization

• Set the process and expectations

• Document the network architecture

• Call structure (Codecs, capacity,

durations, BHCA)

• Plan the touch points

2. Install and configure the test equipment

• Real VoIP equipment emulating real-life scenarios

3. Perform the tests

• Consider IT usage patterns

4. Gather, Analyze and generate report

5. Plan needed remedies

Page 24: Three Steps Towards Lync Nirvana - AudioCodes€¦ · Lync Nirvana Diane Myers Principal Analyst, VoIP, UC and IMS Nimrod Borovsky VP Unified Communications, AudioCodes. Defining

The Process

Assessment duration is dependent on the number of sites, network size,

and complexity – ranges from 1 – 4 weeks

No need to touch the network!

Testing does not require integration to external networks/cloud

Work is performed on-site and/or remote

Minimal to non interference with local IT conduct

Analysis results and report belong to the

customer

Customer able to retain equipment or

continue service after initial

assessment for repeat tests or

deployment monitoring

The AudioCodes Advantages

Partner with and being used by Genesys for its Network Readiness

Assessment (NRA) – now becoming mandatory

Consulted to and complies with Microsoft Network Readiness

Workshop (NRW) – now highly recommended for Lync rollouts

AudioCodes uses its own products as Voice Traffic Generators, Probes,

and Analysis Tools to perform the Network Assessment

Simulates real life scenarios

AudioCodes equipment being used for Network Assessment can

later be used for the VoIP Application Deployment – even later for

continuous voice quality monitoring

Capable of generating and testing traffic for thousands of calls

Consultants with at least 10 – 15 years of VoIP experience

Able to test high-definition VoIP (e.g. RTA-WB, G.722.2)
