A message from the Head of Primary School

One of the wonderful things about being a teacher in a school for a number of years is that you get to see children enter the

school in Reception/Foundation and grow up and leave in Year 12. After 18 years I’ve seen quite a few. And every now and then

I hear about what they have gotten up to after school and the life they have forged for themselves in the real world. It’s

amazing how these little people develop into young adults. They start small and become big. But their growth in size is nothing

compared to how much they grow and change in their knowledge and understanding of themselves and their world. These little

beings who are full of curiosity, enthusiasm and wonder, who are hungry to know things and learn something new every

minute, are growing constantly in their journey through school. They pick up new knowledge, skills and abilities, develop their

passions and begin to see how they fit into the global community they are becoming part of. It amazes me that the students

who are in our early years now are going to be the leaders of the community in the future and doing things that we never even

dreamt were possible.

As well as their growth in size, knowledge and understanding is their growth in identity. At St Martins Lutheran College we are

dedicated to seeing our students develop in every area of their being. Sure, we teach them academically and physically, add

some social and emotional guidance as well and want them to grow in all these areas, but we also provide them with

opportunities to grow spiritually, develop character and see their value and purpose in the world.

Obviously I’m talking about our School Spirit Value of GROWTH. There are many ways to grow and many aspects of growth. Our

value of Growth focuses on the attitude that there is always more that we can grow into and that we are all lifelong learners –

growth is a mindset, a challenge, a journey and a reward in itself.

The largest trees in the world – as tall as they are – keep growing and maturing – new leaves come every season and often fruit

as well. Our hope is that as our students grow bigger, older and wiser that they will also grow in ways that reflect a deeper

understanding of who they are and how the world needs them to be the best them they can be and how their being in the

world makes the world a better place to be - that the world is richer because they are in it. When our children value growth and

embrace it then we can be assured our future is bright.

And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ

[right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.

CAREER CORNER

What’s STEM and STEM careers all about?

We hear a lot about the importance of young people developing STEM skills, but do we really know what that means?

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are subject areas that young people of all ages have access to at school. When we talk about STEM careers, we mean work that includes any or all of those disciplines. When the experts talk about STEM skills, they could be talking about one of two things – either the skills and knowledge you obtain from STEM specific subjects OR the generic skills and attributes employers look for in the workplace. The latter are sometimes referred to as employability skills or transferable skills and include things like:

Problem Solving

Critical and Creative Thinking

Interpersonal Skills

Team work

Communication

Knowing how to learn

The good news is that we can all learn and apply these generic skills to work, regardless of our occupation or career direction – they are not solely the domain of people in STEM fields – and they are in demand.

If however you do have a young person at home who is interested in STEM careers, the following websites are good places to start for useful information:

The STARportal - https://starportal.edu.au/

Careers with STEM - https://careerswithstem.com/

Long Distance Run Finals Congratulations to all students who made the Long Distance Run finals and competed on Wednesday of week 3. We had some very close finishes and placings will be announced at the Primary Sports Day in week 6. All students who participated in PE lessons and in the finals have earnt points for their house. Great work!! Year 3,4,5 Term 1 T-Ball School T-Ball for Year 3/4/5 students has kicked off to a positive start this year. We have 2 St Martins teams playing in the competition. Well done to the students who are participating and representing our school proudly. Trainings are on Monday afternoons on the school oval between 3:30 and 4:15pm. Good luck to both teams as they progress through their season. District SAPSASA Athletics Carnival Throughout this week myself and class teachers have been speaking to students about nominating for the District SAPSASA Athletics Carnival. Selecting the St Martins Athletics team is challenging as students compete in year of birth age groups. So I can be comparing results across three school year levels. There are also limited places in each event and age group. If your child is interested in being involved please make their class teachers aware. SAPSASA Softball Good luck to students in Years 5, 6 and 7 who attended tryouts for SAPSASA Softball earlier this week. If successful they will compete in a carnival in Adelaide later this term. SAPSASA Swimming Carnival Well done to the Year 4-7 students who participated in

the LSE SAPSASA swimming trials held at the Mount

Gambier Aquatic Centre this week. Successful students

will be invited to compete in Adelaide in week 8 this

term.
