One of the great things about the St Marns Spirit is that it will give us something to really emphasise to new people coming into our school community, making it very obvious who we are, what we believe, and what we want them to buy into. While the catchy name is new, it is mainly a tool to try to bring this thinking into the forefront of everyone’s mind, and my hope is that when I ask students at the end of the year, what is St Marns Spirit, it will be taooed across their brains and flow out easily. Interim Principal: Mrs Robyn Teakle

A message from the Head of Senior School

I’m sure most of you will have already seen, read or heard something about our all new St Martins Spirit since we

started back at school last week. Hopefully you are aware that it is the name we are giving to the six values we

selected as representing what we think embodies St Martins, after consultation with students, staff and parents

throughout 2017.

While I say our “new” St Martins Spirit, I actually don’t think there is anything new about respect, faith, compassion,

growth, encouragement and hope being the values of our school. I am starting my 21st year at St Martins in 2018,

and I have seen these values lived out within the school from my very first day.

From the first minute I walked into St Martins in 1998, I found that there was something a little bit different about

the place. We’ve never been perfect, and certainly made mistakes over the years, but the community and care was

evident to me straight away, and is one of the main reasons I’m still here twenty years later, and am now sending

my children here to school. I was treated with respect, exposed and brought into the deep faith of so many

members of the school, shown compassion on so many occasions, supported in my growth, encouraged through

numerous highs and lows, and provided with hope for what was in store for me. I have been blessed to be able to

try to do the same for others, students, staff and family and community members.

What we are trying to do with the St Martins Spirit, is summarise how we believe our students (and staff and

community for that matter) should live, act, and treat people. While we aim to educate our students with

knowledge and skills, we want to emphasise that we think it is equally important that they leave St Martins with

values that will make them good people, able to achieve what they want and achieve fulfilment throughout their

life; a big goal, I’m sure you’d agree.

One of the great things about the St Martins Spirit is that it will give us something to really emphasise to new people

coming into our school community, making it very obvious who we are, what we believe, and what we want them to

buy into.

While the catchy name is new, it is mainly a tool to try to bring this thinking into the forefront of everyone’s mind,

and my hope is that when I ask students at the end of the year, what is St Martins Spirit, it will be tattooed across

their brains and flow out easily.

Hello All, I hope your kids have had a good first week back at school. My name is Jasmin Flett, I am the Chairperson of the Parents and Friends for 2018. I have 2 children at St Martins, Tobias in Year 6 and Ava in Year 4, and Ezra at home. Sally Duffett is our Secretary, and Sam Jellesma is our Treasurer. The executive of the P&F is rounded out with a Uniform Rep, unfortunately for personal reasons that person has had to step back from the role, so if anyone is interested in being the parent who gives their opinion on uniform matters to the school, please let me know! P&F support and unite our school community. One of the ways we do this is through fundraising in a variety of ways. We run a BBQ at both the Senior and Junior Schools Sports days. We have run Hot Cross Bun, Honey, Cookie Dough and Meat Pie Drives. We hold Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas stalls where students can come and purchase gifts for their family members. We have held Movie nights at The Oatmill Cinema. This year, St Martins is hosting the SESSSA (South East Interschools Athletics Carnival) and the P&F will be running a BBQ/ Drinks/Lollies stand. The money raised is used in a variety of ways within the school. Last year we purchased a defibrillator which is located in the foyer of the gym. We assisted the HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) team to purchase a new car. The Learning Support department requested funds for OT equipment and the Sports department needed help with school provided sports uniforms. We also purchased sporting equipment for each year level to make use of at recess and lunch times, and we will continue to discuss the remainder of the “wish list” from staff. We also purchased a new BBQ for the school (and us!). Last year, along with the fundraising we started working towards a new role within the school that the P&F will coordinate. The Class Representatives role has three facets: Class Care, focused on being a welcoming force to the families in your class; Strengthen and Maintain Community Engagement, working on creating social opportunities for the families in your class and year level, and; Supporting College Events, by promoting and encouraging others to attend sports days/information nights etc and promoting P&F fundraisers. We are now in the process of appointing Class Reps in Foundation and Year 1 and will continue to roll this out to other year levels over the coming months/years. We are looking forward to seeing this role in action and I am very excited about the benefits this role will bring to our school community. There are many ways that you can support the work of the P&F. 1. Prayer - The first is through prayer, for myself, Sally and Sam in our roles, for those taking on the new role of Class Representatives, for those attending meetings and helping make decisions on our work, and finally for the fundraisers and community events we organise. 2. Community building - Come along to school events & get to know other families you haven’t met. Encourage others to join us in our work for the school community. 3. Meetings - They’re held on the third Wednesday each month at 1.30 in the community room within the library. We’d love to have you along :) This month the date is 21st Feb for the first meeting for 2018. 4. Volunteer - Help with part of a fundraiser - joining with others to put lolly bags together and making/packing gifts for gift stalls, cooking sausages (on the new BBQ) and selling drinks and lollies at BBQ fundraisers. My email address is [email protected] and my mobile number is 0427 590 002. If you need to get in touch with Sally or Sam please use the P&F email address [email protected] There is also a tray in the front office if you have something that you need to get to one of us, just ask the front office staff to put it in the P&F tray. Thank you for supporting the school community. I hope to see you at upcoming events, or simply around the school. If you have any questions about or suggestions for the P&F, please feel free to get in touch. Jasmin Flett

Year 12 can be a challenging year for students, and particularly at the beginning of the year, it can feel very overwhelming and

a long road to travel.

The Retreat aims to assist students to lessen the uncertainty about Year 12, by offering students time away from school to

learn about study techniques, and ways to look after themselves and one another. It is also an opportunity for students to

relax and enjoy the company of their peers, and to hear from recent year 12 graduates about their experiences.

Last Thursday our 40 Year 12 students headed to Robe for retreat. Once again we were blessed with beautiful, sunny weather

and it was a pleasure to spend time with such a polite, helpful and inclusive group of students.

Thank you to Mr John Pocock for his insights and information about study tips, brain function and how to maximise success

with schooling. Thanks also to our Year 12 teachers, Mrs Jayne Fulton, Ms Connie Ferraro and Mr Stephen Owen for their

guidance and support, and to Mr Jason Buckland for his devotional time and insights. A massive thank you to Mrs Liz Beames

who comes along to retreat each year to ensure we are well fed and to offer her genuine care and sense of fun to the

students. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderfully supportive and caring community at St Martins.

I wish all our Year 12 students every blessing for the year ahead.
