‘Paghilom ang maibubungang paglabas ng katotohanan’
Halos isang buwanna ang nakalilipasmula nang naganapang operasyon noongEnero 25 sa Maguin-danao kung saan na-sawi ang teroristangMalaysiano na siZulkifli bin Hir, alias“Marwan.” Ngunit na-sawi rin ang 44 kasa-pi ng elite na Special
Action Force (SAF) samga kamay ng mgarebeldeng Moro Is-
lamic Liberation Front(MILF) at iba pangmga pangkat.
AntonioTrillanes IV kahaponna “[i]t will help if (the President) issues
a statement for those who are open-minded.But at this point intime, there are a lot of skeptics and they’drather get their infor-mation elsewhere.”

“The overall mind-set of the President isto get a complete nar-
rative and the wholetruth that’s why he isready to do what is
needed to achieve thisobjective,” ani Com-munications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.sa mga reporter.
“But we are hope-ful that once the
whole truth is known, once the whole coun-try knows and under-stands what really happened, there
would be a healingprocess,” pagpapatu-
loy ni Coloma.

There wasn’t a dry eye, Mag-no said, when Evangelista, in amajestic Grace Kelly-inspired
wedding gown by Dubai-baseddesigner Ezra Santos, walkeddown the aisle. “She was beam-ing. She paused intermittently to say hello to guests. We wereall crying happy tears for her. Iremember smoke machines andblowers, and petals falling.”
In the background, Mark Bautista sang “How Did YouKnow.”
Evangelista marched to thealtar with neither of her par-ents, Reynaldo and Cecile Ong-pauco, by her side. “She was a
little teary, but she composedherself, and even managed tosmile,” a source from Escudero’scamp said.
The ceremony was witnessedby an estimated 150 guests.Magno told INQUIRER Entertain-ment that the exchange of vows
was “most touching.” She re-counted, “Heart, in tears, toldChiz, ‘Thank you for loving me.Thank you for fighting for thislove.’”
What she remembered mostabout Escudero’s vow, Magnosaid, was him saying, “You gaveme a reason to live and believein love again.”
He still couldn’t believeEvangelista was marrying him,the senator said, then threw ina joke that he was sure of herlove, just the same, since she of-ten said she found him hand-some, a compliment he usually got only from his mother.
Aside from the couple’s closefriends and a few colleagues, the TV executive said, “All the
major malls in the country wererepresented—the Gokongweis, the Ayalas and the Sys werepresent.”
The reception was just asmemorable, Magno said. Evan-gelista sang “Wind Beneath My Wings,” which she dedicated toher sisters, saying they were hersources of strength. One of them earlier read a letter that
their father had written forEvangelista. They all hugged af-ter Evangelista’s song.
The postwedding programconcluded with a five-minutefireworks display. Escudero
would often check on his kids,Magno said, hugging and kiss-ing them.
Among the principal wed-ding sponsors were Felipe L.
Gozon and Gilberto Duavit of GMA 7, Eugenio Lopez III of ABS-CBN; Viva Entertainmenttop honcho Vic del Rosario; ty-coons Fernando Zobel de Ayala,Ramon Ang, Lance Gokongweiand Hans Sy; and prominentcelebs Eddie Garcia, Susan Ro-ces, Jackielou Blanco and Bi-beth Orteza. Sen. Grace Poe
was a secondary sponsor.Evangelista’s bridesmaids in-
cluded some of her friends inthe industry—Jennylyn Merca-do, Lovi Poe, Carla Abellana,Solenn Heussaff and Alessandrade Rossi. The color motif wassalmon blush. Escudero’sgroomsmen were close friendsand lawyer colleagues.
A two-part special about the wedding will be aired on March1 and 8 on GMA 7.
By Marinel R. Cruz and Allan Policarpio
IT LASTED about five seconds; it was “gentle” and“felt by everybody,” said GMA 7 vice president fordrama Redgie Acuña-Magno when asked to de-
scribe the kiss that sealed the wedding of Sen. Francis“Chiz” Escudero, 44, and actress Heart Evangelista,30, on Sunday at the posh Balesin Island Resort off Quezon province.

Bagong imports
lalaro sa PBA‘Kume’ Cup
SaludMUKHANG maraming hindinaniniwala sa dahilang ipina-hayag ni PBA CommissionerChito Salud when he recently announced his resignationfrom his post.
According to Salud, he justgave himself five years on the
job, after this he will step downto give way to a new commis-sioner who has fresh ideas ,more vigor and enthusiasm.
That’s what the outgoingcommissioner said in hisfarewell speech, pero bakitkaya patuloy ang bulong-bu-longan at spekulasyon sasinasabing tunay na dahilansa kanyang pagbibitiw?
Maraming naghahangad sa
coveted post of PBA Commis-
sioner. The Commis-sioner gets to travel extensive-ly both around the country and abroad.
So hindi maintindihan ngbasketball community why Salud gave up the job.
Isip ng marami, siguro he
was pressured to give up the job. Maraming spekulasyon. Ang usap-usapan sa loob ngPBA office e madalas atmalakas daw mag-casino siKume, bukod pa sa malakingginagastos nito sa out-of town/country trips nito wherehe probably brings his show-biz gang over his sorties.
‘‘Overspending, yan angdahilan,” sabi ng isang PBA insider.
Sabi naman ng isang gov-ernor, nakasuhan siya ngisang PBA team of cheating infavor of another team duringthe last rookie draft.
Sayang, marami pa na-mang magandang nangyari
during his tenure.

Ali signs commercial deal to cement legacy
Boxing website Bleacher Re-port has these to say about thedeal:
‘‘In what may come as a sur-prising move, Under Armourannounced a marketing partner-ship deal with legendary boxerMuhammad Ali on Wednesday.’’
‘‘He's an iconic hero from thepast and a true innovator,” saidGlenn Silbert, vice president of men’s, outdoors and teamsports for Under Armour.
It appears the companies arehoping the new deal will notonly appeal to the nostalgia of
older customers but also helpintroduce a new generation tothe storied fighter. The former
heavyweight champion and so-cial icon, 73, is one of the mostbeloved athletes in history andone of the most important pub-lic figures of the 20th century.
You may find people whodidn’t like Ali for his bravado orfighting style, but you’d behard-pressed to find many whodon’t respect him for the impacthe had on his sport and on thiscountry.
Personally, I think Ali have in
his mind the benefit his human-itarian Foundation could derivefrom the dea.
For all his years as boxing’sfirst true cross-over superstar,
Ali had resisted the temptationof entering into commercial en-dorsement contracts, not thelong-term deals specifically, that
would use his immense popu-larity to boost the marketability of certain consumer productsfor his own financial benefit.
While the images of Ameri-can star baseball players had for years during his heydays beenadorning cartons of certain milk or cereal brands in the USA, Alirefused to be part of it.
It could be because of histhen newly-adopted religion of Islam which teaches simplicity or he would rather use his greatmass appeal for a larger andnobler cause such as for the
Afro-American’s fight for socio-
political equality, for Americancivil liberty and for the end of
American involvement in an im-moral war it could never win infar-off Indochina.
Indeed, Ali became moreknown for his social and politi-cal advocacies but unlike fellowblack American sports greats asJoe Louis and Jessie Owens be-fore him who were more identi-fied with the Establishment.
His political and social
stands placed him in the cross-hairs of the Establishment andcost him his boxing license andhis world heavyweight champi-onship in 1967.
But in the end, he was vindi-cated by the US Supreme Court,no less. He went on to resumehis boxing career in 1970 andregain his title in 1974 by smashing KO 8 win over themuch-feared George Foreman inthe Rumble in the Jungle in
Kinshasha, Zaire. In 1975, he went to the
Philippines and defended hiscrown by beating arch rival JoeFrazier by TKO 14 in anothertimeless classic, the Thrilla inManila.
Before that fight, he accededto a request for him to open anewly-completed shopping mallin Cubao, Quezon City whichbears his name to this day---the
Ali Mall. I was there and was
lucky enough to have personally seen him and shake with hishuge right hand--his main battle
weapon.Little did he knew that it was
the greatest commercial en-dorsement that he ever did forthe Filipino people who stillfondly remember him to thisday and who will be remindedof him because of that mall, now a complex that carries hisillustrious name.
By Teo Medina Reynoso
A FTER years and decade of refusing to lend hisname and image to endorse or advertise con-sumer products, boxing greatest Muhammad
Ali finally signs a marketing deal with a company spe-cializing in training apparel, footwear and accessoriesbut not for the money but more for perpetuating hislegacy in sport in general.
