    Introduction

    Withthenumeroustomatovarietiesavailablefromlocalnurseries,retailers,andseedcompany

    catalogues,itcanbechallengingforahomegardenertoselectavarietythatissuitedtothelocal

    climate,andwillfittheirneedsforenduse.AlthoughmanytomatoesvarietieswillgrowineastIdaho,

    littlewasknownabouttheiractualproduction.Inanefforttoprovidecurrentinformationabouttomato

    varieties

    suitable

    for

    east

    Idaho,

    a

    variety

    field

    trial

    was

    conducted

    at

    the

    University

    of

    Idaho

    Aberdeen

    ResearchandExtensionCenter.

    Procedures

    TwentyseventomatovarietieswereevaluatedinafieldtrialattheUniversityofIdahoAberdeen

    ResearchandExtensionCenterin2007. Selectionofvarietiestestedwasbasedonretailerclaimsof

    earliness,recommendationsfrommarketgardeners,andhomeownerpreferencesasindicatedthrough

    arecentsurvey.

    Thetrialconsistedofthreereplicationswithfourplantsperplots. Plantswerespaced2feetapartin

    rows

    spaced

    3

    feet

    covered

    with

    black

    plastic.

    Transplants

    were

    produced

    on

    contract

    by

    Dale

    and

    Pat

    Palmer,localgreenhouseproducers. PlantsweretransplantedtotheplotsthelastweekofMay.

    Plotswerefertilizedusingapproximately80lb/AofNjustpriortoplanting. Thiswastheonlyfertilizer

    theplotsreceivedallseason. Plotswereusuallyirrigatedtwiceaweekwithabout0.7to0.9inches

    watereachtime.

    Thefirstharvestofeachplotbeganwhenapproximately10fruitwereripeineachofthethree

    replicatedplots. Subsequentharvestsweremadeweeklyuntilthetrialwaskilledbyahardfrostthelast

    weekofSeptember. Atharvest,fruitwerepicked,separatedintomarketableandunmarketable

    categories,counted,andweighed. InlateAugust,allvarietiesproducingripefruitwereenteredintoan

    informalpreference

    taste

    test.

    Informationpresentedforeachvarietyisbasedontheneedsofhomegardenersandsmallmarket

    gardeners. Emphasisisplacedonprovidinginformationaboutripeningpattern,growthhabit,

    appearance,andculinaryquality. Marketableyield,measuredinpounds producedperplant,isalso

    reported.

    ResultsofEvaluation

    Trialresults

    are

    presented

    in

    two

    forms.

    The

    first

    is

    agraph

    that

    summarizes

    the

    harvest

    patterns

    for

    the27varieties(Figure1). TheearliestvarietieswerereadytoharvestthefirstweekofAugust.Alight

    frostthatdidnotterminateplantgrowthoccurredduringthesecondweekofSeptember,whichwas

    followedbyasecondlightfrostafewdayslater.AhardfrostonSeptember24killedtheplantsinthe

    trial,afterwhichonefinalpickingwascompleted.

    Thesecondpartofthisreportistheharvestdatawithadescriptionandapictureofeachvariety. The

    dataisalsosummarizedinTable1attheendofthisreport.Notallpictureswerefromtheactualtrial.

    Thosewiththefruitsittingonabluesurfacearefromthetrial. Thedatapresentedincludethe

    Thisvalueistheproductivityofthevarietyandisreportedinpoundsperplant. Onlyripefruitthatwere

    freeofdefectsandsuitableforsaleinthemarketplacewereincludedinthiscategory. Itisasumofall

    fruitharvestedforallharvestdatesforeachvariety. Unripefruitremainedontheplantattheendof

    theseasonandaroughestimatewasmadeofthepercentageoftotalproductionwasnotpicked.

    Thisvaluewasobtainedfrom16panelistswhotastedeachvarietyandratedthemforflavorona1to10

    scale,where

    flavorful.

    varieties

    were

    available

    for

    testing

    at

    the

    same

    time,

    so

    somevarietieswerenotevaluated.Weconsideredevaluationoftheearlyvarietiesasbeingmost

    importantsosomeofthelatevarietiesthatdidnothaveripefruitwerenotincludedinthetastetest.

    GrowthHabit

    Growthhabitisanindicationofplantsizeandvigor. Thevarietiesweredividedintofourcategories

    usingdescriptionsthatarecommonfortomatovarieties. Theyare:

    andsometimesearlyplantdeath.
