UK industry slams reform plan A CONSULTATION period aboutthe UK government’s proposedchanges to consumer protectionin the travel industry has seensignificant opposition to the plansfrom across the travel industry. The revised ATOL (Air TravelOrganiser’s Licensing) deal wouldsee the creation of three separatedivisions - full ATOL, Flight PlusATOL and Flight Only ATOL - andresponses have generallycriticised the added complexity ofthe proposed scheme. The Association of British TravelAgents says the three levels ofprotection would lead to evengreater consumer confusion, andalso has serious concerns aboutthe implementation timetablewhich would see the changesintroduced on 01 Jan. Thomas Cook said the alteredscheme would allow airlines tooffer identical holidays to thoseprovided through tour operators, but without any requirement forprotection.
“It’s a recipe for customerconfusion and distrust of anindustry that is no stranger tobusiness failures,” said ThomasCook director of external affairs,Andy Cooper. “We maintain that the simplestsolution is to protect all air travel, whether flight only or packageholiday,” he added. The Association of ATOLCompanies warned that underthe proposed reforms more thanone million passengers a yearcould lose existing protections. “Far from increasing clarity, thiswill add to consumer confusion,”the Association said.
