September marks the beginning of

the harvest season. Well, it started

sooner and won’t get underway for

many things until later. But using

today’s popular phrase, September is

the “tipping point.”

Dove season opens Labor Day, with

a bag limit of 12. If you really

get into them, you’ll need a lot more

than a dozen shotgun shells to get

your limit. They are a difficult target,

sometimes called dry land ducks.

Speaking of ducks, the new seasons

are official now. Most of Traveler

Country is in the Middle Zone with a

season of Nov. 1-Dec. 30. It is once

again a six-duck bag limit with lower

limits on some species. The six can

include no more than four mallards,

and only two of them can be hens.

New this year, you can include three

wood ducks in your bag. It had

been a limit of two for many years.

Also new this year is a bag limit

of three for mottled ducks.

Mottled ducks? Never heard of

them? They’re a close relative to the

mallard and they used to think they

never migrated away from Florida.

Apparently, however, they get around

some and might show up here.

Season for canvasbacks is closed

this year. Other duck limits include

black ducks, 1; pintails, 1; scoup, 1;

redheads, 2, hooded mergansers, 2.

Other ducks, such as teal and shovel-

ers, can be taken to total six.

The early teal season has been con-

firmed as running Sept. 6-21 with

a daily bag limit of four. Teal migrate

much earlier than most other ducks—

you could begin to see these travelers

on area lakes and rivers in August.

The open season for “local” geese

is Sept. 27-Oct. 5 with a bag limit of

three Canada geese. This season is

set to control local geese populations

— very few migrating geese will be

around yet. Season for snow geese opens Oct.

25 and the regular season for Canadas

and white fronts opens Nov. 22.

Goose seasons nowadays are state-

wide. Duck seasons are zoned.

Basically north of the Missouri River,

duck season opens a week earlier. In

much of the Bootheel and southwest-

ern Missouri, it opens Nov. 27.Gigging

The season for gigging non-game

fish opens Sept. 15. You can take

20 fish, generally, but only five hog

suckers on Current River. The opening

night is a Monday this year, so Friday

and Saturday, 19th and 20th, will

probably be the two biggest nights,

complete with gravel bar fish fries.

Deer

The archery season for deer opens

Sept. 15. Then there’s an urban

season in 11 counties, Oct. 3-6. Regu-

lar firearms season is Nov. 15-25, fol-

lowed by muzzleloader season Nov.

28-Dec. 7 and an antlerless hunt in 73

coun ties, Dec. 13-21.

There are youth seasons Nov. 1-2

and Jan. 3-4. There are youth

seasons for waterfowl hunting too as

well as pheasants and quail.

Archery season for turkeys runs

with archery deer hunting. Firearms

season for turkeys is the month of

October. Squirrels were already in season.

Rabbits come in Oct.1. Quail and

north Missouri pheasants, Nov. 1,

woodcock and grouse, Oct. 15.

Some less-well-known seasons in-

clude snipe, Sept. 1; sora and Virginia

rails, Sept. 1; crow, Nov. 1. Coyote

and groundhogs are already in season.

We may have passed the tipping

point between hunting and fishing,

but there’s lots of fine fishing to be

had in September. It can be fast or

it can be pretty slow, but the cooler

temperatures defiintely make it more

comfortble for humans to pursue the

sport. Almost everything is in season for

fishermen in September. Next

thing to close will be the trout parks at

the end of October.
