    Maintenance Checklist

    Critical Points

The life of the bike will be determined by how consistent maintenance is performed.

Wiping down the bike at the end of each class, or at least by the end of each day, will prevent

rust and other forms of corrosion to build up.

Never use abrasive or oil based cleaning liquids when wiping down the bike. Consider

usingSpinTech Polishand other SpinTech products for your maintenance purposes.

Do not wipe down the chain with soap or a towel. Use a cleaning brush to remove any debris

    buildup, if needed.

At the end of each class, students should be encouraged by instructors to release all the

tension from the bike to allow perspiration to evaporate.

If your facility allows members to interchange pedals, it is critical that the pedals are checkedafter each class to prevent damage and possible injury.

Water bottle cages are easily damaged during class when over-sized bottles are forced to fit

within them. Checking and tightening the screws will help prevent damage.

    What to Wipe Down

Using an absorbent cloth, focus on all areas where perspiration can settle. Raise all posts to the

highest setting to expose this moisture.

    Handlebar

    Flywheel

    Front leg assembly

    Back leg assembly

    Chain guard

    Brake knob and bolt assembly

    Pop pins

    Levelling feet

    Inspection

Inspect major moving parts that require constant proper torque and which, if ignored, can cause injury

or result in damage to the bike.

Crank arms: Use a foot pound torque wrench 30 to 35 pounds.

Pedals: Use a pedal wrench. Verify that the pedal is not cross-threaded.

    Water bottle: Tighten assembly screws.

Nothing is more important for prolonging the life of your bike and insuring good performance than

regular maintenance. High performance bikes are like any other racing vehicle. They are fragileand demand frequent preventive maintenance.

Almost all of the costly ($200+) repairs we see at Bikesport are the result of poor or non-existentpreventive maintenance. For every two hours the bike is on the road or trail, you should performa minimum of 15 minutes maintenance.

There are three things you can do to safeguard your bike from serious mechanical problems:

    1. Keep your bike clean by washing it.2. Do not use too much chain lubricant.3. Keep your tires fully inflated.

If you practice these three maintenance operations regularly, you will greatly reduce the amountof serious mechanical problems you have.

    Washing Your Bike.

Scott Parr, former team mechanic for Motorola, once said a pro team bike mechanic is really aglorified bike washer. Washing bicycles is so important to their maintenance it is the first taskpro team mechanics perform at the end of each racing day. In big events like the Tour de France, all the team bikes are washed completely every day.

Bike washing dislodges abrasive residue that can be pulled through a bicycle drive train and intocables. This residue is what causes the parts to wear quickly.

Basically, you wash a bike like you wash a car. Modern bicycles have sealed or semi-sealedbearing surfaces that can resist some water intrusion. They are not waterproof. Do not use powerwashers or direct a high pressure stream of water into any bearing surface such as hubs, bottombracket, headset, or cassette.

A work stand is useful when washing a bike as it enables you to remove the wheels beforewashing. This lets you get into the rear triangle of the bike more easily and do a better job ofgetting the bike clean. If you dont have a workstand you can simply lean it against a wall.

To wash a bike you need the following equipment:

    Bucket

    Sponge

    Towel(s)

    Stiff bristle brush

    Hose

    Chain lube

Simple Green (or other water soluble, bio-degradeable)

Start by rinsing the bike off with a garden hose. This will dislodge the loose foreign matterattached to the bike. Some people are concerned water may damage bearings or cause corrosion. While a valid concern, most modern bikes have adequate seals to prevent water intrusion. Evenwith extremely dirty mountain bikes, it is best to avoid the high-pressure power washer and stickto a garden hose.

Once the rinse is complete apply the Simple Green or other biodegradable degreaser to thedrivetrain. Be sure you get the back of the chainrings and the cogs as well as the chain. It is agood idea to degrease the rear wheel and the rear brake also as these pick up lubricant residuefrom the drivetrain. After you apply the degreaser it is a good idea to let it soak for a few minutesto dissolve lubricant residue.

Following the degreaser, use your stiff bristle brush to scrub the chainrings and cogs. Scrub bothsides of the chain as it passes over the chainring while back-pedaling. If you are using a workstand and have removed the wheels you can simply place a quick release skewer in the reardropouts to hold the chain. We use an old hub (most bike shops have used ones they can giveyou) with a cogset on it for a "dummy hub" to hold your chain in place while you wash. Scrub thedrivetrain thoroughly and pay attention to the back of the chainrings. If you have used wax basedlubricants like White Lightening you may have a difficult time getting the entire residue off.

  • 7/30/2019 Two Wheeler and Car

    5/17

After scrubbing the degreaser off the drivetrain soap the entire bike with a big sponge and a lot ofwarm suds. Wash the handlebar and stem area, getting behind the brake levers and under thestem. Wash under the saddle and wash both rims and tires. Soap the drivetrain to wash off thedegreaser residue.

Following the wash, rinse the bike completely. If you left your wheels on during the whole process,

pedal the bike in the workstand or pick up the rear wheel and pedal to sling the excess water offthe bike. Quickly towel the bike and take it for a ride for about 2-3 blocks to blow the water off.Centrifugal force will shoot most of the water off the rotating parts. After your short ride put thebike back in the stand and towel it off thoroughly.

About every 3-4 washes you should mark your saddle height on the seat post, remove yourseatpost and dry the inside of the seat tube and the outside of the seatpost. If your bike needsgrease between the seatpost and seat tube (not all bikes do, it may cause problems with carbonseat posts or carbon frames and may not be recommended with titanium bikes- see your owner'smanual), put a thin layer of fresh grease there and replace the seatpost to the original height.

Following the complete drying, relube your chain from the bottom, on the inside of the chain'srotation so centrifugal force drives the lube into the chin links, not off onto your bike. Wipe all the

excess chain off by back-pedaling the drivetrain through a rag several times.

If you have a painted bike I recommend waxing it. During the waxing be sure to inspect the framefor cracks as well as bar and stem. Check to be sure your bottle cages are tight and not cracked. This might also be a good time for new handlebar tape.

Once this operation is complete and you have checked your wheel quick releases and aired yourtires the bike as close to new as you can get it by washing and is ready to ride again.

A key component of washing the bike is inspecting it completely for minor problems that couldbecome major. Washing your bike not only makes all components last longer, but forces you tolook it over in great detail.

Keeping the bike clean is the most important step in maintenance and the most frequentlyoverlooked one. Take care of your bike and it will take care of you.

Maximum torque is 18.35 Nm at 6000 rpm

Now available in four shades, blue and yellow has been discontinued

    Hero Karizma ZMR Exterior

The looks of new Karizma ZMR are quite subjective. The bike is unable to convince you instantly. The Y-shapedheadlight is not as smoky as Honda CBR150R and the whole front appearance including its tinted visor, bodycoloured rear view mirrors and edgy mudguard looks way less sporty and attractive than R15. The enginecovering features ZMR written on it and looks nice but doesn't look aerodynamic. Clear lens indicators areintegrated in this fairing. Dark golden colour is finished on its disc plates, silencer and telescopic forks at its front.Side panels are very similar to the regular Karizma. It has single seat with split, body coloured grab rails. The tail

section of the bike is a complete let down. The integrated LED tail light resembles to its cheaper sibling CBZ andwith its slim rear tyre, things get worse. The rear mudguard is not stylish either. Looking at the tough competition,we expected something much better than this from Hero and they could have worked more on its styling.

Main Styling Features of Hero Karizma ZMR

Main styling features of Karizma ZMR are Full Front Fairing, Split Clip On Handle Bars, Body Coloured Split RearGrab Rails, Mirrors Mounted On The Fairing, New Rear Mud Guard, New Headlamp & Tail Lamp, Which Is NowLED, Rear Disc Brakes, Turn Indicators Mounted On Front Fairing, New Stylish Graphics, Slightly ReprofiledBody Work, Body coloured rear view mirrors, New design for silencer and heat shield, Blue back-lit instrument

cluster and ZMR logo on the instrument cluster.

Instrument Console of Hero Karizma ZMR

Hero Karizma ZMR features a fully digital instrument console with LED indicators. The overall designing andappearance of instrument console is quite soothing. It sports a round pod for its digital tachometer with digital fuelgauge just above it. It also has digital speedometer, odometer and trip meter with other digital information .Thisinstrument console comes with blue illumination and certainly looks best in its segment.

    Engine and Gearbox

Hero has added fuel injection to the same 223cc air-cooled engine of regular Karizma. This 4-stroke singlecylinder engine now generates a maximum power output of17.6 bhp at 7000 rpm with a modest torque

production of18.35 Nm accessible at 6000 rpm. This engine is served with a five speed manual gearbox withone gear down and four up-shift pattern.

    Acceleration and Performance

Undoubtedly, its a very refined engine which never complains even if pushed hard. This engine generates agood amount of torque and thats also available very early which helps this bike to move effortlessly. Gear ratiosare also very short and thats why you never run short of power but once you take this bike on long runs then youwill come across its disabilities. The mid-range is very effective but after 6000rpm there is nothing much left inthis bike and from here on, its nowhere near to its other competitors which easily go all the way to 10000rpm.The heavy amount of torque enables this bike to complete 0-60km/hour in 3.7 seconds, which is quiterespectable but its heavy weight and lack of sixth gear restricts this bike to a top speed of 126km/hour which isnot possible with a pillion rider. The high end performance is disappointing. However gear transitions are very

smooth and gear ratios also feel well matched. Once you are in bigger gears than you can notice the slowresponse of its throttle in comparison to others. If you talk about refinement then this engine is fine but if its aboutpower and performance then ZMR loses to its rivals.

    Hero Karizma ZMR Mileage

The fuel efficiency of ZMR is less than the regular Karizma due to its additional weight. You can expect anythingaround 30-35km/ltr in city conditions and on long runs it can give you a mileage of around 35-40km/ltr.

Comfort while Driving Hero Karizma ZMR

Hero Karizma ZMR features a wide and comfortable seat which is very helpful on long journeys. The clips onhandle bar are quite big in size and are easily reachable as you dont have to bend forward. One can easily holdthem with a perfect grip. Unlike its competitors, foot pegs are placed much before which takes away the sportyfeeling but feels much convenient.

    Safety Features and Storage Space

The bike has under seat storage space and comes with standard safety features.

    Suspension and Brakes

Hero has equipped this bike with telescopic forks at its front with 5-step adjustable shockers at its back. Thissuspension system is quite adequate and easily carries the heavy weight of this bike. Its perfect braking systemkeeps this hefty machine under control. It sports a disc brake of 276mm at its front with a rear disc brake of

    240mm.

  • 7/30/2019 Two Wheeler and Car

    8/17

    Ride and Handling

The bike is certainly not good in this department. The heavy weight of this bike is quite evident in its handling. Itsnot an easy bike to drive in city traffic. Even on highways, the bike lacks stability and fails to remain grounded.Things get worse around corners as its skinny tyres are unable to hold the road properly and it may scare you atsharp corners. Its only itswheelbase of 1350mm which keeps it alive on roads and confirms you a satisfactory

ride. Bumps and potholes are not a major issue but its low ground clearance of 159mm is a matter of concern. You may find it hard to cross many obstructions on our Indian roads. Wider tyres and high ground clearancewould have made things better.

Shades Available in Hero Karizma ZMR

Karizma ZMR is available in four shades: Spot Light White, Panther Black Metallic, Candy Blazing Red andVibrant Orange (New Shade). The company has discontinued Yellow and Blue shade which were available in2010 model.

    Verdict

Hero Karizma ZMR is priced at INR 98.5K (ex-showroom, Delhi, may vary). At this price, ZMR becomes the

cheapest bike in India to sport a full fairing. Despite being the cheapest in its segment, we still feel itsoverpriced. Only a fairing is not enough for this bike to beat its competitors. Bikes of this segment are known fortheir incredible performance, speed, enjoyable ride and handling and unfortunately ZMR lacks all thesecharacteristics. Its certainly not a complete value for money bike but can be considered for its acceptable looks, performance and features. If you find R15 and CBR150R out of your budget then you can opt for this bike.

Yamaha has added a limited edition series of its FZ-S and Fazer models, which would be

available in a new shade of battle green along with re-worked graphics

With the festival season around the cornerYamahahas launched a special edition series of its

most successful offering for our market, the FZ-S and Fazer. The Japanese two-wheeler

manufacturer has given the bikes a cool cosmetic makeover by offering them in a new shade of

battle green color which is a mattish shade of green. Along with the new colour the limited edition

bike would also feature all new graphics to add to the bikes overall exterior appeal.

Speaking on the occasion, Roy Kurian, Vice President Sales and Marketing,YamahaMotor

India Sales Pvt. Ltd. said, Our strategic intent is to provide customers with stylish new variants

of the FZ series to match his personal style. These bikes have been instrumental in catapulting

our sales to an all new level. We have kept the essence of FZ series bikes intact while altering

the aesthetics to exemplify the masculine feeling these tough machines are known for. We are

confident that these variants too will be an instant hit among the biking enthusiasts.

The changes on the limited edition are only cosmetic and no changes have been made on the

mechanicals. The bikes are powered by the same 153cc, air cooled, 4-stroke mill producing

14.2PS @ 7,500 rpm and maximum torque of 13.6 Nm at 6000 rpm and are mated to a 5-speed

transmission. This isnt the first time thatYamahahas launched a special edition of the FZ-S and

Fazer and this seems an attempt to boost its sales figure with the 'limited edition' moniker, adding

that little bit of exclusivity to a tried and tested product from time to time. The limited edition FZ-S

has been priced at Rs. 74,385

Preventive maintenance carAirfilter Check it every month. Replace it when it

becomes dirty or as part of a tune -up. It is easy

to reach, right under the big metal 'lid', in a

carbureted engine; or in a rectangular box at theforward end of the air in a duct hose assembly.

Battery Extreme caution should be taken while handling a battery since it can produce

explosive gases. It is advisable not to smoke, create a spark or light a match near

a battery. Always wear protective glasses and gloves.

Belts Inspect belts and hoses smoothly. Replace glazed, worn or frayed belts. Replace

bulging, rotten or brittle hoses and tighten clamps. If a hose looks bad, or feels too

soft or too hard, it should be replaced.

Brake Fluid Check the brake fluid monthly. First wipe dirt from the brake master cylinder

reservoir lid. Pry off the retainer clip and remove the lid or unscrew the plastic lid,

depending on which type your vehicle has. If you need fluid, add the improved

type and check for possible leaks throughout the system. Do not overfill.

Engine Oil Check the oil after every fill up. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean. Insert it fully

and remove it again. If it is low, add oil. To maintain peak performance, the oil

should be changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Replace

the oil filter with every oil change.

Exhaust Look underneath for loose or broken exhaust clamps and supports. Check for

holes in muffler or pipes. Replace the rusted or damaged parts. Have the emissionchecked at once per year for compliance with local laws.

Hoses Inspect the hoses and belts monthly. If a hose looks bad, or feels too soft or too

    hard, it should be replaced.

Lights Make sure that all your lights are clean and working, including the brake lights,

turn signals and emergency flashers. Keep spare bulbs and fuses in your vehicle.

Oil Filter To maintain peak performance, change oil every 3 months or 3,000 kms

whichever comes first. Replace oil filter with every oil change.

    Power

    Steering Fluid

Check the power steering fluid level once per month. Check it by removing the

reservoir dipstick. If the level is down, add fluid and inspect the pump and hosesfor leaks.

    Shock

    Absorbers

Look for signs of oil seepage on shock absorbers, test shock action by bouncing

the car up and down. The car should stop bouncing when you step back. Worn or

leaking shocks should be replaced. Always replace shock absorbers in pairs.

Tyres Keep tyres inflated to recommended pressure. Check for cuts, bulges and

excessive tread wear. Uneven wear indicates tyres are misaligned or out of

    balance.

    Transmission

    Fluid

Check transmission fluid monthly with engine warm and running, and the parking

brake on. Shift to drive, then to park. Remove dipstick, wipe dry, insert it and

remove it again. Add the approved type fluid, if needed. Never overfill.

Washer Fluid Keep the windshield washer fluid reservoir full. Use some of it to clean off the

    wiper blades.

Wiper Blades Inspect the windscreen wiper blades whenever you clean your windshield. Do not

wait until the rubber is worn or brittle to replace them. They should be replaced at

least once per year, and more often if smearing occurs.
