Head of Sport and Activities—Mr Dave Capra

The Term 4 sporting season got off to a great start over the past week with Swimming, Water polo, Cricket,

Sevens Rugby, Canoe Polo, Triathlon, Basketball, Rec Canoeing, Athletics and the very first of our Tuesday

Trail sessions. Regardless of the sport, the boys threw themselves into the action with enthusiasm and

good natured competitiveness.

Across the different activities we saw boys enjoying the opportunity to participate in the sports they love

with their school mates. In particular it was great to see the new students to our community who are set

to join us in 2016 and beyond getting involved in cricket and representing the College for the first time. The

carnival atmosphere on Brothers Oval with 8 of our Under 10 teams playing throughout the morning was

enjoyed by all. As always the energy that our youngest students bring to our community is in itself

’energising’ and we look forward to seeing more of this as the season progresses. I hope that all new mem-

bers of our community felt very welcome and enjoyed their first official ATC Sporting Experience.

Tuesday Trails

On Tuesday morning we held the first of our trail running sessions with 22 boys from Year 4 – 8 coming

along to run together. For our first session we did a 2km warm up followed by a 2km time trial and then a

2km warm down. A great first effort. The idea of the time trials is to group runners together so that when

we do our extended trail runs, we will be running at a similar pace. Tuesday Trails are open to all students,

staff and families and it was great to see a group of parents come along and join in our first session. I have

been contacted by some mums who suggested a walking group next week which is a great idea—all are

welcome, we leave the bottom car park at 6.45am. Bring a towel along for a dip in the pool before class.

Jazz by the River

This weekend our community is really pleased to be hosting our first ever Jazz by the River event. On be-

half of the sporting community I would like to wish all of our musicians, music staff and the dedicated

group of staff and parents who have worked hard to bring this event together, the very best of luck for

what promise to be an outstanding community event.

ATC AFL Breakfast

Congratulations to Fiona Kearney and the group of dedicated and passionate AFL parents who put together

an outstanding awards breakfast on Sunday morning. This was a great way to finish off a big season of

footy. The award recipients were presented with their trophies by Brisbane Lions player Pearce Hanley and

the boys were given a year book compiled by parent Suzanne Rosolen which will provide many great mem-

ories for years to come. Congratulations to all award recipients and to all involved in putting together such

a great event.

Yours in sport

Sport News – Cricket— After a long period of preparation (or short, depending on how you look at it), 24 ATC

teams stepped out in College colours on Saturday for the first day of Term 4 junior club cricket in the various Brisbane North competitions. Judging by the happy, smiling faces, everyone enjoyed themselves and the boys playing cricket did too.

Eight ATC U10 teams played matches on the Brothers Ovals whilst two ATC U11 teams played Valleys teams on the Jack Bowers Ovals. The canteen was pumping out the bacon and egg burgers and cold drinks, the coffee van was doing a steady business and the sun was shining. It was real carnival atmosphere at the College. The matches were closely contested and I was amazed that the Year 3 boys, not even at the College as yet, were able to belt out the war cry at the end of their matches. Well done to every-one. Notable performances were Lochlan Rutch with the first Michelle of the season (5/18 v St Patrick’s Red U13) and Seth Cheadle taking his first wicket in his first ever game of cricket (1/25 v Valley Green U13).

U10 teams play Round 2 this Saturday whilst U11-14 complete their Round 1 matches.

Whilst the College will provide ample cricket gear for boys to use at team training sessions and matches, it is strongly recommended that boys have their own batting gloves and protector for hygiene reasons. In fact, this recommenda-tion appears in the Brisbane North rules 2.2 (c). These items can be purchased from any sports or cricket store and I will have stock available for purchase at team training sessions over the next couple of weeks.

The Cricket Intensives program, led by Mr Gary Jones, has resumed and is conducted 3:15pm-4:45pm Monday after-noons at Jack Bowers Oval. This is an opportunity for boys of all Year groups and standards to gain a little extra crick-et coaching during the week. No registration is required nor commitment to attend every Monday. A boy may feel he needs help with his bowling action or forward defence or catching etc. He would be able to go down to the nets on a Monday afternoon and receive some tuition from a qualified HCA coach from 3:15pm. He may be there for 30 minutes, an hour, or the entire period. It does not matter but it is a user pays system and the cost is $20.00. Coach-ing could be in the form of one on one, small group or large group, depending on the number of boys attending and the aspect of their game requiring attention. Please note there will be no intensives Monday 19 October.

Parents are requested to provide coaches, managers and Age Group Coordinators with as much notice as possible in regard to absences. Obviously, this is not possible with Saturday morning illness but players can be shifted between teams to ensure maximum participation on match day if absences are known in advance. Players will gain far more by playing in a team of 10 or 11 than 8 or 9. We want to have as many boys as possible participating fully every Sat-urday. There is no need to inform Mr Capra or I of short term absences, only if a boy will be absent for a significant period.

Good luck to luck to all this Saturday. Have fun!

ATC Track & Field

What a great way to finish off our Track & Field season!

Last Friday evening we attended a Queensland Little Athletics meet at Bracken Ridge Little Athletics Centre,

McPherson Park, Bracken Ridge. The hospitality was wonderful and we were all made to feel extremely

welcome and very much part of their well run and organized program. The boys had a great time and the

positive feedback was very much appreciated. For me personally, it was great to watch our boys positively

interact with all the other boys and girls within their age group as they made new friends and competed

together with beaming smiles on their faces. They were all great ambassadors for Ambrose Treacy College

and we could not be more proud of them. Well done gentlemen!

We would like to thank and acknowledge the great work of our Track & Field Coaches for 2015—Mrs Anna-

bel Wolf, Mrs Kate Colahan, Mr Bill Walker and Mr Joshua Heap. Their work, care and enthusiasm whilst

coaching our boys is greatly appreciated.

To all the students (and parents) who got involved in the 2015 track & field program, we thank you for your

commitment and enthusiasm. We do hope you have had a positively enjoyable athletic season and are

equally as keen to get involved in 2016.

ATC Tuesday Trail Runs

Our overall emphasis is on social running working towards improving fitness levels and general condition-

ing. Students will be broken into ability levels and will run with the guidance of ATC staff. Again, we would

like to stress that though our emphasis is on enjoyment and social running, we will also be covering dis-

tances of up to 6km in these sessions.

When: Tuesday mornings— 6.45am start

Where: Meet at the Top Bus Shed (near Japanese Garden)

Dress: Appropriate running attire. (students are not to run in the clothes they will be wearing that day)

Parents are most welcome to also join in and run with both the students and staff of ATC.

Squad and Club Swimming

SWIM MEETS—This weekend 36 of our ATC Swimmers will compete at the East Brisbane Swim Meet. Best of

Luck to all those nominated to compete. More details will be emailed directly to these families.

The next swim meet we will be taking the team to is Yeronga Park– November 7–8. Nominations close

Wednesday 28th October. Please hand these to Paul or Fiona at the pool.

CLUB NIGHTS—Our first Club night was held last Thursday with 44 swimmers racing. It was a very smooth

evening that concluded by 7.30 pm. If you are still deciding if swim club is for you then come and have a

try next Thursday 29th October at 6 pm. We also have races for the younger swimmer and for some of

these swimmers it was their first race.

SWIM SQUADS

All ATC students intending on squad swimming must have their nominated days booked in with the pool.

This allows us to staff the pool accordingly for the coming term. Thanks for your help with this matter.

ATC TRIATHLON SQUAD

One of the great things about triathlon is every time an athlete arrives at the start line they have the opportunity to

accept a personal challenge and choose personal excellence. No matter where you race in the field this holds true.

Our squad training sessions provide athletes with the opportunity to practice these skills. When we are deep into a

wind trainer or a run session, it’s the perfect time to for athletes to accept the challenge and choose to be excellent.

Becoming good at this will help the squad on race day and also with many other challenges they face.

Term 3 was an excellent start to the program with over 20 boys attending training sessions and showing great com-

mitment. We also had a terrific first race day at Redcliffe that was enjoyed by athletes and parents alike. We have

laid a great foundation for the season ahead.

I would like to congratulate, Tom Kearney, who has been selected into the Triathlon Queensland Emerging Talent

Squad after achieving the combined 1500 m run & 400 m swim time standard for this squad. Well done Tom.

Squad training resumes in term 4 as follows;

Monday 6.8am : Run, Swim Session at ATC Pool

Wednesdays 6-8am: Swim, Wind Trainer, Run Session at ATC Pool

Saturdays (Fortnightly)

10/10/15 – Tri session at the pool- Swim bike run.

24/10/15 – Tri session at the pool- Swim bike run.

7/11/15 – Tri session at the pool- Swim bike run.

It’s still not too late to join the triathlon squad for the 2015/16 season and if you are interested or would like any

more information please see Mr. Paul Jones.

Our main target race for term 4 is the All Schools Met West Trials

WATER POLO—New Season

In round 1, the U15 boys lost 23-0 to Sunshine Coast 1. Whilst it was a physically tough game, there were some

great passages of play and displays of skill from the whole team. As a side note, this Sunny Coast team did win the

U14 National Championship last year - so the boys definitely shouldn’t be disheartened by the score. I was also

very impressed with the great sportsmanship that all the boys showed during and after the game.

As was the case with the 15’s, the score line for the Under 13’swasn’t an indicator of just how much the boys im-

proved over the course of their first game. To challenge Barra’s #1 with 3 goals and numerous attack’s on goal

was a great credit to our team. Speaking to the Barra’s Coach after the game, he was impressed with some of the

passages of play the boys put together. If we can do this more consistently through the season there is no

doubting there will be strong improvement.

Under 13’s Green Round 2 17th October at 4:20 pm @ All Hallows 2 Ambrose Treacy College V Sunny

Coast (arrival time 3.40pm)

Under 15’s Blue Round 2 17th October at 2.20 pm @ All Hallows 2 Ambrose Treacy College V Polo

Bears (arrival time 1.40pm)

CANOE POLO—Term 4

Canoe Polo is held on Wednesday night for year 5. Information has been sent to those students who

put their name down to play. If you haven’t received the info or you would like to join the program then

please contact [email protected] We look forward to seeing everyone at the games next week.

Please arrive at the ATC pool 10minutes prior to your start time

Volleyball - Mr Tim Walker

After a successful ‘orientation to volleyball’ for ATC students in term one, the College has been invited to compete in The Gap State High School Invitational Spring Series Volleyball Competition in term four. Hats off to the students who took up the opportunity to train through the holidays, improving their skills for the competition ahead. I would also like to welcome all the new students and their families to ATC volleyball and thank them in advance for their support throughout term four.

The College Volleyball uniform consists of a jersey (provided by Mr Tim Walker) that is to be returned at the end of the season, College volleyball shorts (that can be purchased from the uniform shop), white socks and supportive shoes. The shorts do NOT have pockets and are designed as such to avoid injuries to thumbs when players are jumping. Please ensure your son has these shorts by week 2 of the competition (Thursday 22nd October).

ATC Volleyball has been lucky enough to secure the special expertise of Dean Mayfield as one of our coach-es. Dean has a wealth of experience in volleyball as a player and coach, and is a member of the Queensland Pirates Men’s Volleyball team who are currently playing to defend their last two National titles in the Aus-tralian Volleyball League (AVL). We welcome Dean on board and are excited to see our boys improve under his guidance. Thanks also to Mr Mark Watson who has been a welcome addition to our coaching team.

Teams were selected on Tuesday and will play their first round tonight (Thursday 15th October). The College buses will transport the students to The Gap State High School, however, private transport will be required home for the duration of the season. Teams and fixtures for this week are listed below. Please note that ATC 3 will play 2 games in week one. Best of luck to all boys in their first game. Throughout the course of the competition, parents can contact me on 0410 611 496.
