And this example of the dialogue between Moses and the Holy One Blessed be He concerning Redemption repeats itself in our gen- eration between us and G-d: "What are these great miracles that you promised us, where is the Redemption of which it is said: Open your eyes and see?" The answer lies in the news. What happens in the world today, on one hand, and is happening in Israel on the other hand. Look at it while muting the sound of the politicians' speech, of what they promise, decide etc. Look at the world as it is, objec- tively. We can see that everything develops, everything progresses, everything works: The development of technolo- gy and science, medicine, research, economy but also human relation- ships. In addition, a social phenome- non takes place before our eyes. We can see that the people who advocate peace, "lifestyle", freedom of expres- sion, tranquility and diplomacy bloom and flourish. Whereas those who want to hurt, to conquer, to live only through prohibitions, wars etc. destroy themselves without any exter- nal intervention. In Israel, Jews argue and forge a new identity in the world. The Jewish peo- ple returns to its sources and the study, the prayers and the good deeds bring about calm and peace in Israel and the world. In fact, if you look around you, nothing's going on! It is safe for you to go out of your house and this is a great miracle after all what the Jewish people have suffered in exile they move into a new area, a time where their work and efforts will be recognized, they will be appreciat- ed for having constantly worked for peace itself as well for promoting peace among the nations of the world. This is the Redemption we live in which unfolds before our eyes. For all those who want to see, everything fits, the last pieces of the puzzle are laid down and we can formulate a new ver- sion of the famous saying: "Think good and it will be good" saying: "Think good because everything is good!" Summary of the speechof the Lubavitcher Rebbe King Moshiach Chlita

Shabbat Parashat Ekev - 23 Menachem Av 5751 – 1991

See clearly the GeulaIt is well known that among the months of the year, the month of Elul is the most suitable for introspectionand self-examination ("Cheshbon Nefesh") in order to rectify the mistakes of the past year and to get pre-pared as befits for the new year. As we get closer to the month of Elul it becomes necessary to consider howthis introspection should be conducted and what changes should be made regarding our behavior.

Insofar as the month of Elul is thesummary of the whole year's assess-ment it represents an even strongerexpression of the purpose of man toserve his Creator, what is especiallyemphsized in the arcrostic contain-ing the initial letters of "Ani LeDodiVeDodi Li" – I belong to myBeloved (G-d) and my Belovedbelongs to me (1). This verse isindeed an expression of the relation-ship between the Jew and G-d,either in his service of G-d throughthe observance of Torah and the per-formance of Mitzvot ("I am to myBeloved") or in the assistance G-dprovides to man.The month of Elul therefore teachesthat it is not necessary to wait pas-sively for G-d to manifest Himselfbut rather that the essential and thebasis of the relationship should bethe effort of man expressed by thebeginning of the verse "I am to myBeloved", which is followed bydivine assistance "and my Belovedis mine".And although, in order to initiatethis effort, we already receive helpfrom above (such as the influence ofthe Thirteen Attributes of DivineMercy that are revealed during themonth of Elul), we have to be awarethat this is not the essential part of it:it is only through the fulfillment ofour mission with our own effortsthat we can deserve a divine mani-festation that is integrated andnoticeable and of even greater inten-sity ("my Beloved is mine").This is the reason why the nameElul starts with an Alef: to teach usthat our work has to start with an"Alef", the first letter, i.e. the lowestlevel and precisely this way it

becomes possible to progress to thenext level, then to Gimel, Dalet…up to Tav. This being established, we haveseen that the second part of thename "Elul" contains the letters Vavand Lamed alluding to the words"Vedodi li – and my Beloved ismine" which represents the divineassistance G-d grants to man. However, since it is also part of thename of the month when man'sservice of G-d of the whole year isbeing reviewed, it is clear that it alsorefers to the level of this service:When man serves G-d "from onhigh", that is, completely ignoringthe difficulties that the world mayoppose to his service of G-d.

The soul and the bodyThese two approaches to the serviceof G-d had already been there sincethe creation of the world. As a mat-ter of fact, the world was created onthe first day (Sunday) to teach us toserve G-d "bottom up" and, on theother hand, the books of Kabbalahteach us that there had been aShabbat that preceded the creationof the world (2) whose perfectionhas blessed and opened the days ofcreation, teaching an approach "topdown".These two approaches are found inevery Jew. The body was createdfrom the earth and it is necessary toinvest a long and profound effort inorder to refine and to elevate it. Thesoul of a Jew, however, is totallybeyond this world's limitations, being a part of the Divine "mamash"– concretely, as it says in Tanya, itkeeps its divine character evenwhile it is coated in a physical body,

down here, in the material and con-crete world. And, by the strength ofhis soul, the Jew can be free of theneed to move slowly and can imme-diately live up to the requirement ofserving G-d perfectly, in a way thatfalls within the scope of "Shabbat",a heavenly way up to doing miraclesand touching the messianic perfec-tion, "the day that will be entirelyShabbat and rest for eternal life" (3).It follows from all the foregoing thata Jew must always serve G-d in twoways. On one hand, he must alwaysserve G-d in a structured and order-ly manner, progressing step by step. And this must always be the case, even on days as high as Yom Kippuror Simchat Torah (and as a proof, these days are also included in thecourse of the week which is pro-gressive).On the other hand, a Jew has toserve G-d even on regular weekdaysa service "top down" by fulfillinghis duty of perfection by drawingfrom the strength of his soul thelevel of Shabbat which is therewithin him. From a general point of view, wefind these two levels in the two cat-egories among the Jewish people:the divine service of some Jews isessentially the study of the Torah, which is beyond the world, whereasthe divine service of other Jewsfocuses on the relationship to theworld through their professionalpractice.

Which one is more important?Insofar as we have said above, thekey is the effort of the Jew ("Ibelong to my Beloved") and divineassistance occurs only in a second

phase, the same can be said regard-ing the two approaches of service ofG-d: the essential and the basis isprecisely when man serves G-d withhis physical dimension what ele-vates him "bottom up" and onlythen comes the service of G-d withhis soul. The reason for this is simple:Because G-d above all desires thatthis world here, the material world,be rectified and elevated. It is clear, that it is necessary to accomplishthis task within the world andaccording to its parameters. It is truethat this work requires a lot of timeand efforts and that one mustprogress step by step, but it is notpossible to jump directly to higherstages, for one will definitely dis-cover that the world is not able tobear its revelation.Even though each Jew received aparticularly high soul that canaccomplish its work "top down" thiscan only be a supplement to theessential work that is performed"bottom up". Don't think that this way the ultimateelevation will be any less. On thecontrary, this is precisely how wewill achieve the revelation of theEssence of G-d ("Atzmut UMahut").In summary, the month of Elul rep-resents three approaches to the serv-ice of G-d: 1) "Ani leDodi – I belongto my Beloved", the bottom-up serv-ice, limited according to the possi-bilities of this world, but has theadvantage of exerting a profoundinfluence, 2) "VeDodi li – and myBeloved belongs to me," the top-down service, an attitude that noth-ing restricts but that does not pene-trate the world; 3) "Elul", the combi-

w w w . v i v e l e r o i 7 7 0 . c o mnation of the two previous approach-es, so that the unbounded service ofG-d also penetrates the world.

Taking stockNow we understand how to estab-lish a "self-assessment" during themonth of Elul: First one must takestock of his service of G-d "bottomup": To know how many efforts wehave invested and how well we havemanaged to refine our body and theworld around us.Then we have to take stock of theservice "top down" which is derivedfrom the divine soul: fulfilling thedivine commandments without wor-rying about the limitations imposedby its physical existence or thematerial world. And, in addition, being aware thateven if we manage to do the will ofG-d up to perfection by ignoring thedifficulties, it is necessary to make itenter our physical dimension andthe whole world in order that every-thing serve G-d perfectly. This is the task of every Jew in themonth of Elul: to connect the "Ani"(oneself) to the "Dodi" (G-d), butthen to take care that the "Dodi"belong to "Li" – me, i.e. that thesemost elevated levels be connectedand integrated in the material worldso that it reaches perfection.

Everything is found in the TorahWe can therefore understand theconnection of the foregoing with theParasha we read on this Shabbat, which is Shabbat Ekev: The term"Ekev" has two meanings: the sim-ple meaning is that G-d will grant areward for the performance of Hiscommandments ("Vehaya EkevTichmerun – Following your obedi-ence of these laws […] He will blessthe fruit of your womb and the fruitof your ground…" (4)) Rashi, how-ever, gives a different interpretation:"Ekev" means, among the com-mandments, those, man gives littleimportance to and tends to neglect,to "trample on" with his "heel"which in Hebrew is called "Ekev". There are two questions that have tobe asked on these two interpreta-tions: Why didn't Rashi translatethis word according to its most sim-ple and obvious meaning? What isthe relationship between these twointerpretations? The answer to this is that G-d cer-tainly will reward the fulfillment of

His commandments (as taught bythe first interpretation), but the wayof achieving this is precisely bystarting with "little" things, the com-mandments that man neglects.Rashi chose this interpretation toteach us that this is precisely wherewe find the essential and basic serv-ice of G-d and it is only by goingthrough this stage that one can thenachieve perfection.

The generation of RedemptionThis teaching is specifically relatedto the current period and our generation, the generation ofRedemption, (after it has becomecustomary to link each subject to theMessianic Redemption). The Talmud calls our era "IkvetaDiMeshicha – the heel of theMessiah", a term which has twomeanings: 1) It is the lowest gener-ation in history of mankind, as theheel is the lowest part of the body(which is why it is characterized bythe increasing insolence and otherills) 2) It is "Ekev" – the end of exilewhere Moshiach will arrive shortly. The relationship between these twomeanings, as we have seen above, derives precisely from the fact thatthis generation is the lowest: Dafkabecause of its lowliness the work ofthe Jewish people to raise it, is evenmore precious now because it marksthe last stage of exile and its conclu-sion, what directly leads us into thecomplete Redemption, into theMessianic Era in which there will bea perfect combination of the "high"and the "low".

Ad matai – Until when? The balance sheet a Jew must get tois that according to all accounts andaccording to all signs that G-d haswritten in His Torah, the MessianicRedemption should already haveoccurred a long time ago!Especially after the "three weeks"during which we have studied the

laws relating to the building of theHoly Temple and today we find our-selves before the Shabbat that bless-es the month of Elul, in which theKing – G-d – is "standing in thefields" and welcomes everyone withjoy and kindness, and we are here in"770" in the company of manydozens of Jews, so we have a greatresponsibility to cry out and demandof G-d "Ad Matai? - Until when?"For, in truth, as we have completedour task in this exile, how is possi-ble that Moshiach didn't come yet?Maybe the reason for the delay canbe found in the response thatMoshiach gave to the Baal ShemTov, when he asked: "When willyou, Master, come?" "When yourwellsprings will spread to the out-side." Thus, throughout the ages, theRabbis of Chabad have devotedthemselves to the dissemination ofthe Baal Shem Tov's teachingsaround the world. And in addition tothat, the developments and theextraordinary in-depth study and thespreading of Chassidut caused theseteachings to reach every communityand each circle among the Jewishpeople and in the whole world. And since Chassidut has been trans-lated into many languages, we havereached a situation where every Jewon earth, regardless of what languagehe speaks and what environment hebelongs to, is (at least) potentiallyconnected to the wellsprings of theBaal Shem Tov, in a way of beingable to study them by himself. But since Moshiach (nevertheless)hasn't come yet, it might be thatthere is a category of Jews, whomChassidut couldn't reach yet. I gotaware that there is indeed a kind ofwriting into which Chassidut hasn'tbeen translated yet: Braille writingthat allows even the blind to read atext by recognizing specific signsthrough touch. This is truly a "spreading of thesources of Chassidut to the outside"

because the fact that Chassidut hasnot yet been translated into Braille, despite all that has been done untilnow, shows that it is a truly "out-side" dimension.

Braille has been conquered! However, recently there has been asignificant innovation: the Tanya, the central opus of Chassidut wasprinted in Braille! And even if thebook has not yet reached all theblinds in the world, the very factthat it exists, offers to all the Jewswho need to access to the study ofChassidus through this means, thepossibility to do so. Especially sincethis book reached "770", the houseof my father-in-law, the (previous)Rebbe, from which we had the meritto continue his work and which isthe source of the spreading ofChassidut in the world. It shouldalso be noted that Tanya is called"the Written Torah" of Chassidus, sothat all the Chassidut is contained inthis book.In plain terms, the MessianicRedemption has to happen imme-diately! Then the blind will behealed from their infirmity andsee clearly (5). They will be healedeven before all those who needhealing and see like everyone else(6). In addition, it won't even benecessary to read in the MessianicEra, as Moshiach will teach allthrough vision, so that all will seethe profound topics of Chassidusand won't have to read aboutthem in books. May G-d grant that through thestudy of Tanya in Braille, they willimmediately be healed in thismoment preceding Redemption andthat they may study Torah in thebest conditions until the revelationof "the New Torah that emergesfrom me" during the MessianicEra. And the essential: May theRedemption by our righteousMoshiach happen immediately!

I regularly visited the Chabad house to hear somelectures for women which the Rebbetzin gave. Sheinsisted very much on having at least ten womenattending the class before she started her lesson. Aweek of family celebrations had prevented manywomen from attending and the Rebbetzin was quiteupset so that she asked each one of us to bringanother person in order that we would be ten. I tookher seriously and begged my mother and a friend toaccompany me. When we arrived, we saw that ourlittle group actually completed the required quo-rum. The Rebbetzin was greatly pleased, thankedme and explained the importance of the study in thepresence of a large audience.Due to my pregnancy I was very tired this evening,I was going to give birth in a few weeks and felt agreat heaviness invading me. I felt asleep almostimmediately and began to dream of the RebbeMelech HaMoshiach Shlita giving me many bless-ings. When I woke up, I could remember everydetail of this dream, except for what he said to me.I had recognized him from the picture that adornedthe room of my son. I remembered his pleasant per-sonal charisma, his penetrating gaze and his capti-vating smile. I remembered that he had blessed me,but could not find what he told me. I didn't tell any-one about this dream. One month later we left Herzlia in order to settledown in Kfar Yaavets. There I found a Chabadnursery, and as I had heard many good things aboutChabad nurseries in Samaria, I decided to have myson Dvir, registered in such a nursery. I calledRabbi Shatal Amram, director of the Chabad-insti-tutions of that region, who invited me to come tosign up for the coming year. He also explained tome that each child that is registered in the institu-tions of the Rebbe receives its blessing for himselfas well as for his family and that they provide themwith an abundance of good. I listened to what RabbiShatal said, not knowing then how much I wouldneed these blessings later on. After the registrationI went home and continued my usual activities. Myhusband came home from work very tired, and wedid not have the opportunity to talk. So I didn't tellhim that I had registered our son to kindergarten. He went to bed early and that is all I remember…"Around midnight, Yair Derhy felt a blow on hisshoulder. He woke up in a panic and turned on theswitch to find out to his horror that his wife waslying on the floor. He tried to wake her up but withno success, then ran into the yard with his cellphone (the phone line had not yet been installed) tocall an ambulance. He went back to his wife andkept trying to wake her up. The shrill sound of theambulance could be heard, the medical teamentered the house and took care of his wife whileYair described to them what had happened and thatshe was in the eighth month of pregnancy. One of

the volunteers ran to the vehicle to bring a respira-tor. The ambulance left after a few minutes, takingElena, who was still unconscious and connected tothe breathing apparatus, to the hospital. She wastaken immediately to the intensive care unit, wherethe doctors told Yair that his wife showed all thesigns of a severe toxemia (a flow of toxins into theblood due to a lack bodies to filter) as well as othercomplications so that she might become partiallyparalyzed or even worse. Elena remained unconscious for two days, connect-ed to the breathing apparatus. The doctors said theywill try to save the life of the baby. Two days latershe suddenly woke up and a small, healthy girl wasborn in the meantime. After four days in intensivecare, Elena was transferred to a regular room. When she saw her husband she said: "You have toknow that all this is due to the merit of theLubavitcher Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach." She keptrepeating these words and her husband thought shewas dreaming. When she recovered sufficiently, thechild was brought to her and Elena was surprised todiscover that the number on the label that the babywore around her fist was 770."All this is due to the merit of the Rebbe MelechHaMoshiach Shlita!" she screamed. Her husband

ran into her room and was amazed to hear thesequence of events. Thus he was told of what hadhappened in the night during the lecture, of thedream where his wife was blessed by the Rebbe aswell as of the registration of their son to theChabad-Kindergarten, during which Rabbi Shatalhad told his wife that a child that is registered in aninstitution of the Rebbe receives for him as well asfor his relatives a special blessing, the blessing ofthe Rebbe, finishing with the number 770 on thewrist of the baby. This story went around all the settlements and madea great "Kiddush Hashem" (an event that shows offthe greatness of G-d) with this chain of events sowonderfully set together by Divine Providence, with the epilogue of Elena's complete recoverywithout any aftereffects, against all odds. The baby remained in the incubator for some time, because she was borne prematurely, and Elena, too,had to still remain in hospital in order to completeher recovery and by consequence to teach thephysicians, that this world has a master.
