NEW HAMPSHIRE HIGHER EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION (NHHEAF) PRESENTATION

We are pleased to offer two presentations this spring with speakers from the NHHEAF Center for College Planning.

Applying to College 101 presentation begins the conversation with high school juniors and their families about the college admission process. Topics discussed include: tips for searching and finding the ‘right’ school, special programs and options to consider when choosing a school, advice for college touring and ways to stand out to a college. Attendees will receive a copy of the 2020-21 College Insider.

If you have a student heading off to a college as a freshman for Fall 2020, the Paying for College 101 presentation is for you. Participants are encouraged to bring the student’s award packages. NHHEAF will discuss the components of the financial aid award package, including federal student loans, grants & scholarships. If you do not have an award letter yet, that’s fine, NHHEAF will provide a sample. Additional funding/financing options will be discussed as well as a review of what repayment may mean to your family. All attendees will receive Funding Options handouts.

NHHEAF is available for individual appointments to work through many aspects of the college process, and we encourage you to use them as a resource! You can reach NHHEAF at (800) 525-2577.

The Empower Club will once again be hosting Granite State Respect Week from February 10-14th. in conjunction with our annual Women’s Shelter Drive (February 10-21) to benefit Emily’s Place.Granite State RESPECT Week (GSRW) is a teen-centered campaign that takes place in high schools across New Hampshire during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

The structure of this campaign is similar to a high school spirit week in that each day has a unique theme that ties into the greater message of teen dating violence awareness. GSRW is based off of an initiative that was originally developed by loveisrespect.org in an effort to engage, educate and empower young people during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

She helps GHS groups by assisting with book-keeping and never seems annoyed with any question (and she is asked so many questions every day)! She keeps the advisors up to date on deadlines, assists them through the entire process for events such as graduation, prom, homecoming, RESPECT Week, fundraising, making deposits and withdrawals of funds and so much more. STUDENT COUNCIL

This holiday season, GHS Student Council has been quite busy! The last two weeks of school before winter break, Student Council held the annual Canned Food Drive, led by Phoebe Castellano, Chair of the Canned Food Drive Committee, with the help of Co-chair Harrison Spalthoff, and the rest of the Canned Food Drive Committee. Many efforts went into the preparations for this two-week event, in addition to the time Student Council members volunteered to collect cans and monetary donations from every classroom each morning. In an effort to maximize donations, Student Council members also visited local neighborhoods leaving bags with a note stating that GHS Student Council members would return to collect any donations that families would like to leave out for pick up. All together over 2,100 nonperishable food items and over $4,600 were raised and donated to the Goffstown Food Network in order to help local families and individuals in need. The breakdown of the donations includes over $2,200 and 1,600 food items were donated from GHS students and staff during the two-week drive, over $1,800 was donated by the GHS community during our penny slam fundraiser in the fall, nearly 500 food items were collected from families in local neighborhoods, and an additional $550 was donated from two local businesses: Broken Wrench Repair and Choice Metals. This would not have been possible without the support of both GHS students and families as well as the Goffstown community and local businesses. Student Council would like to thank those who contributed to provide for those in need. In addition, throughout the month of December Student Council members spent Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings volunteering their time at the Goffstown Network Food Pantry. This was an incredibly valuable experience for Student Council members and a great way to help serve our local community. As December drew to a close, two seniors, Nick Tzannos and Brandon Korn, brought a new idea to student council and helped to form a new year-long committee: The School Spirit Committee. With members from all grades, this committee aims to increase attendance at school events such as sports games and performances by the GHS Performing Arts. The Grizz Card was adopted, listing several winter events. Students who attend the events get their card punched upon entrance and have the opportunity to be entered into a raffle to win a prize at the end of the winter season. The committee has also created themed events at sports games such as the white out and silent night held at a recent home basketball game. With the hard work of the committee, Student Council hopes to increase school spirit and student participation. During mid-January, Student Council formed the Winter Carnival committee which will be headed by the chair, Kevin Buciak and co-chaired by Isaiah Fennell. Two members from each class round out the committee. In the next few weeks the committee with be hard at work in preparation for the Winter Carnival Week which will take place from February 17th through the 21st and include dress-up days and other fun activities leading up to the class competitions at the assembly on Friday,

OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD

13

2020 DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION OUTSTANDING TEACHER

The Goffstown School District is pleased to share that Mr. Andrew Pyszka has been named as the 2020 NH Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Teacher of American History. Mr. Pyszka has been a member of the teaching team within the Goffstown School District since 1994. He taught for 22 years at Mountain View Middle School before transitioning to Goffstown High School in the fall of 2016. At GHS, Mr. Pyszka has taught both Civics and US History classes. In the classroom, his passion and enthusiasm are contagious, his content knowledge is extensive, and students are always attuned to the learning activity at hand.

In addition to demonstrating a love and deep knowledge of history, he has a passion and gift for sharing it and encouraging civic engagement in his students. History in Mr. Pyszka’s classroom is not about names, dates, and events. It is about the study of who we are – an exploration of self, family, and community on both a local and global scale.

With his tenth grade Civics students, Mr. Pyszka has integrated a Civic Engagement project through which students are encouraged to explore the essential questions of: What does it mean to be civically engaged? What is our civic responsibility to community? What is the importance of civic engagement within the United States of America? in either academic or field research. Through this work, Mr. Pyszka seeks to bring the Founding Fathers and the Constitution to life as he meaningfully connects his students and their modern life to the ideals on which this country was founded.

Additionally, Mr. Pyszka models all that he seeks to impart on his students. He can always be found on the sidelines of an athletic contest, in the audience of a school theater production, helping serve dinner at the annual Hall of Fame dinner, working as a class advisor, or sitting in the cafeteria at lunch talking with students. His civic engagement begins in the halls of GHS but extends, as well, into his work within the community.

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Pyszka spent a year as the Assistant Director of Civic Education at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College. The focus of his work during this year was on student leadership development, management of co-curricular student activities with a civic engagement focus, and assisting in a civic engagement course centered on the Public Achievement model. Public Achievement is a youth citizenship education model created by the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.

Mr. Pyszka has been an active member of the Goffstown Historical Society and a member of the Board of Directors since 2010 holding the office of Vice President since 2017. The purpose of this society is to promote interest and appreciation in the history, heritage, and development of the Town of Goffstown, realizing that the history of our community is basic to our democratic way of life, giving a better understanding of our state and nation, and promoting a better appreciation of our American heritage.

Through a balance of high expectations and the intentional building of relationships, Mr. Pyszka is able to tease out the best from within all his students. He is exceptional at what he does and the Goffstown School District is pleased to share this well-deserved recognition of excellence.
