WALKING EXPERIENCES:THE BEAT IN YOUR WALK
Enjoy a relaxing walk along the island’s famous River Medina. Starting at the Museum of Island History in Newport, this walk offers something for everyone to enjoy from docked boats to fascinating scenery. What’s more, if you’re a music fan, you’ll love walking through the site of the infamous Seaclose Park, home to the one of the UK’s most famous music festivals: Isle of Wight Festival. Imagine the buzz once the stage is set and artists such as The Who, Coldplay, David Bowie to name only a few have once graced the stage. Continuing along the river there’s still more sights to see from wildlife to historical points.
Once you reach the end of the trail you will reach Island Harbour a working harbour with luxury boats and a chance for you to pause and relax at The Breeze Restaurant & Bar, with an open-air seating area you can enjoy a selection of food and drink and watch the world float by.
Heading back into Newport if you are keen to find out more about Island History stop off where you started and pop off into the Museum of Island History. The Museum of Island History is located on the ground floor of the Guildhall situated in Newport High Street. The Guildhall was built by John Nash in 1816. The clock tower was added in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee.
The Museum explores the history of the Isle of Wight from fossils to festivals. Find out about the creatures which lived here over 120 million years ago. There are ammonites and dinosaur fossils on display. You can even touch a dinosaur toe!
