MULTICULUTRAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT The Center for Leadership & Social Change invites you to participate in this year's Multicultural Leadership Summit by submitting a presentation proposal. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to submit a presentation proposal. The Multicultural Leadership Summit focuses on a foundation of knowledge that will enhance student success in leadership in the areas of multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice. The goal is to educate students on

diversity and multiculturalism and empower them to be agents of social change in an increasingly diverse and global community. The theme for this year’s summit is “Building Alliances for Change: Together We Can _________”. For the first time for MLS, FSU is partnering with Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University and Tallahassee Community College to bring together students from each respective campus by attending the 2015 Multicultural Leadership Summit. One of our main goals is to have participants learn ways to engage in opportunities to take action and create change with their communities around issues they are passionate about. Acceptable proposal submissions should focus on a specific social justice issue and/or leadership and service experience within the context of: • Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality • Sex, Gender, and Sexual Orientation • Access, Class, and Ability • Leadership and Service Presentations accepted for the 2015 Multicultural Leadership Summit will be presented on Saturday, January 31, 2015. 2015 MLS will be Friday, January 30, 2015 from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 8:00am to 5:30pm at the Dunlap Success Center, the Globe and Multicultural Engagement Building, and the Askew Student Life Center on Florida State University campus. Each presentation proposal that is accepted will be allotted 80 minutes including the Question & Answer component (if applicable). FSU MENTORING INSTITUTE The Center for Leadership and Social Change at Florida State University is excited to announce that planning is under way for the 3rd Annual Mentoring Institute! It will be held on Friday, December 5 from 9:00am-4:00pm. If you are involved in (or interested in being involved in) mentoring males, you can register for this day-long Mentoring Institute. In this time

where the behavior of men is under increased scrutiny, the focus is on the importance of mentoring men and boys. The hope is to create a space where needs can be identified, best practices are considered, discuss challenges, share experiences, and strengthen collaborative connections between campus and community. The Mentoring Institute is currently seeking workshop proposals of potential interest to mentors and/or mentor professionals. MOELLERSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE The Moellership Program, named for its founder Bill Moeller, provides undergraduate and graduate students at Florida State University the opportunity to focus 8 – 12 weeks of their summer on service at a non-profit agency. Selected students receive a stipend of up to $4,000 for participation in the program. Examples of past projects include working with people experiencing homelessness in Tallahassee, serving at a camp for children with chronic illnesses in North Carolina, implementing a reading curriculum in South Africa, caring for people with HIV/AIDS in Spain, and promoting sustainability in Brazil. kNOw MORE Join the conversation surrounding Sexual Violence Prevention at Florida State University. During these conversations students will learn about the dynamics of sexual violence, how to engage in bystander intervention, how to obtain and define consent, and about campus resources and support. CAREER BOOT CAMP The Career Boot Camp is for any College of Social Science and Public Policy student. Students can earn recognition for completing the series if they complete the following 3 steps: 1) Attend 4 of the 6 workshops in the Career Boot Camp series throughout the month of October. TUTORING AT FSUS Seeking tutors for The Florida State University Schools middle school and high school track and field program. The track and field program has been a powerhouse in the Big Bend for over a decade and now they are looking to become a powerhouse in the classroom by hiring 5 volunteer tutors to help facilitate our study hall sessions and provide top notch help for all of their student athletes. They need strong tutors in the subjects of Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Spanish. Study hall will be Monday through Thursday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at FSUS. All tutors are required to have a 3.0 GPA in their college courses and be in their second year or higher in college. FSU CHILDCARE FALL FESTIVAL

Volunteers are needed to assist in running games and activities, and serving refreshments. This is a great opportunity to earn service hours and have fun while working with families and children. WESTMINSTER OAKS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY There is an old-fashioned Story-telling and festival day on Thursday, October 30! Lots of volunteers are needed – as a group or individually. This is an opportunity to become familiar with Westminster Oaks Retirement Community. Specifically, Westminster Oaks is looking for face painters, balloon animal tiers, people to hand food (e.g. corndogs or cotton candy) and most of all, people to help the residents to and from the health center. HOME FIRE PREPAREDNESS CAMPAIGN The American Red Cross is hosting a Home Fire Preparedness Campaign: Appalachee Ridge Neighborhood Canvassing Event. Home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. Seven people die every day from home fires. A fire-related injury is reported every 40 minutes. Annually, home fires cause 2,500 deaths and roughly $7 billion in property damage. The Home Fire Preparedness Campaign aims to save lives, reduce injuries and build more resilient communities through raising awareness, facilitating preventative actions, and fostering community participation. The national goal is a 25% reduction in home fire deaths and injuries in the next five years. At-risk neighborhoods in Tallahassee will be targeted and volunteers will go door-to-door providing educational materials and encouraging citizens to test their smoke alarms. In a partnership with the Tallahassee Fire Department and State Fire Marshal, the goal is to reduce the frequency of home fires in the Appalachee Ridge neighborhood. This event will take place on Monday, October 20, 2014. Volunteers will be meeting in Jack McLean Park at 8:30am. 2015 COMMUNITY CATALYST

Fifteen Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) Community Catalysts will be selected to work with local leaders, government and

advocates to develop a project that makes it easier for locals, students and visitors to find their way and connect with the community. The team’s goal is to speed up implementation of the proposed “Wayfinding Signage System,” and create new initiatives that showcase a variety of community highlights. As Florida's Capital, the Tallahassee region is home to thousands of annual visitors and residents. Domestic and international visitors are looking for popular sites and commercial destinations, but currently many of Tallahassee's landmarks and unique areas are not identified due to dated Wayfinding signage. The application process is now open and the deadline is November 14.

TALLAHASSEE GREEK FESTIVAL

The Tallahassee Greek Festival is one of Tallahassee’s cultural events. Their motto is "come for the food, leave with the culture." This year's Greek Festival will be held October 24 and October 25. The event is listed on the Leon County Volunteer web site, and qualifies for service credits for students. Volunteers are needed to help at this event. There are 3 shifts each day (9:00 am to 2:00pm; 1:00pm to 6:00pm, and 5:00pm to 11:00pm). All volunteers at the Festival receive a free meal. As a volunteer in the Pastry Booth, you stand behind a tray of pastries, and simply place the pastries on the customer's tray. The customer then moves on down the line. In addition, they will be preparing the pastries on October 21, 22, and 23, and require volunteers at this time too. They will be packaging pastries from 9:00am to 8:00pm. LIBERTY MUTUAL RESPONSIBLE SCHOLARS

The Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars program challenges students in undergraduate program with excellent academic achievements to demonstrate what it means to be responsible. SPAGHETTI 100

Capital City Cyclists (a 501C3, not for profit) is looking for volunteers to help with a fundraiser for the 'Kids on Bikes' program, called Spaghetti 100. Proceeds from the Spaghetti 100 goes to support Capital City Cyclist’s Kids on Bikes program, where we provide engaging, educational opportunities for kids to learn skills and awareness of how biking positively impacts their health, environment and lifestyle. The two major programs that we put on under Kids on Bikes are: Volunteers are needed to man food stations /rest stops, mark routes, packet pick-up, etc. Those who are interested can register to volunteer directly on the cccyclists.org/spaghetti100/volunteer/. The event is November 15th and we need up to 75 volunteers. It will be a very fun and rewarding day for all!

MILES FOR MASON 5K Miles for Mason 5K will be held on October 25 at 8:00am. The race is a memorial run in honor of 6 year old Mason Rhinehart-White who tragically lost his life on August 5. The money raised from the walk/run will go to help the family purchase a permanent home for their family. However, the main purpose of the event is not financial support, but the opportunity to encourage the family as they deal with the tragedy. NATIONAL COUNCIL ON US-ARAB RELATIONS Students are invited to participate in the 2015 Florida Regional Model Arab League, a debate-based simulation of the League of Arab States. This academic and leadership development experience is open to both high school and university students. The conference will be held at the University Area CDC, March 19 through 20, 2015.
