VOLUNTEER AT ST. FRANCIS WILDLIFE HOSPITAL St. Francis Wildlife Association is a non-profit organization, and was founded to provide humane care and rehabilitation for all species of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife in North Florida and South Georgia. Each year, they receive and care for more than 3,000 animals. Volunteers are needed to work in the wildlife hospital at the St. Francis Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, located four miles northwest of Havana. It is just 25 minutes from downtown Tallahassee. They need volunteers to help feed many different types of animals, clean cages, and do dishes and laundry. They also need volunteers to build and fix cages, and transport animals from local vets to the St. Francis Wildlife hospital. Volunteers can also do outreach from home and distribute newsletters locally. Internships are available for those interested in biology and other science fields. Volunteers are also needed for fundraisers and special events. Please see the website for event notices and calendars: stfranciswildlife.org. Volunteers must sign a liability waiver. People under 18 are not permitted to work with animals. If you are interested in learning more, please attend a Behind the Scenes session on the first Saturday of the month from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at the hospital.

WALK FOR AUTISM SPEAKS Autism Speaks U strives to bring awareness to those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder to the students of FSU as well as the Tallahassee community, as well as raising money for autism research. Autism Speaks U will be having their first annual walk for Autism Speaks on October 15 at 6:30pm starting at Langford Green. If your organization is interested in participating in the walk, you can form teams and register as a team - and if your group raises $200 you will be able to have a booth at the event! Also, if you plan on joining the walk, please e-mail Gina Soricelli ([email protected]) with a main contact that they will be using to keep in touch with you and let you know of future events leading up to the walk. THE SHARING TREE The Sharing Tree is a reusable resource center, similar to a Goodwill, but for art & school supplies. The mission of the Tree is to collect and redistribute reusable materials to educators, artists, and the broader learning community while simultaneously educating the community on the art of creative reuse/ trash to treasure. They host events, art classes and also need help with sorting and organizing- as well as work in the new gallery! They take volunteers EVERY Friday from 1:00pm-4:00pm & every second and fourth Saturday from 10:00am-2:00pm. Rags 2 Bags is another project they host- making reusable shopping bags out of donated materials- regardless of skill level they take volunteers every first and third Thursday and fourth Saturday. WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT REGATTA The Florida State University Coastal & Marine Laboratory invites you to build and race a vessel in the fourth Annual Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta on October 3, 2015. Boats can be as artistic or as whacky as you’d like. The goal is just to stay afloat. Prizes include “First to Cross the Finish Line,” “Most Creative Use of Materials,” “People’s Choice,” and the “Titanic Award for the Most Spectacular Failure.” Challenge your colleagues, family, friends, and neighbors to build a boat and join the fun. Landlubbers need not worry; there will be plenty of activities for you as well. Cheer on your friends, enjoy some great food, and learn about how to protect the world’s oceans through recycling. BSU NATIONAL BLACK ALUMNI INC

The Florida State University (FSU) National Black Alumni, Inc. is an officially chartered affiliate of the FSU Alumni Association. The Association’s mission is to build a network of Black alumni and friends and sustain meaningful relationships on behalf of FSU. The FSU National Black Alumni promotes and supports the academic achievement and excellence of Black students at FSU. Consequently, the FSU Black Alumni Scholarship Fund was established in the FSU Foundation to provide financial assistance to minority students of African descent. As part of its 2015 National Black Alumni Reunion, the FSU National Black Alumni will award $500 scholarships to three deserving students. One scholarship will be awarded in honor of Maxwell Courtney (first Black undergraduate student to attend and graduate from FSU), one will be awarded in honor of Dr. William R. Jones (Founder and first Director of the FSU Black Studies Program), and one is specifically designated for a student who is involved in the International Program or plans to study abroad. Interested students should complete the Scholarship Application, and briefly discuss their academic experiences and community involvement outside the formal classroom. Additionally, applicants must describe how they took a stand and were courageous in the face of injustice or a challenging situation, and how they used this as an opportunity to build social solidarity, encourage understanding, or broaden their academic experiences. Halloween Howl: The Tallahassee Museum is in need of volunteers throughout October for its twenty-first annual Halloween Howl event which will run October 23 through 24. VSA FLORIDA TEACHING ARTIST OPPORTUNITY VSA Florida, the state organization on arts and disability, is seeking teaching artists for the 18 counties that make up the Florida panhandle and Big Bend region. VSA will contract visual artists, dance/movement artists, dramatic artists, and musicians. Contract artist professionals will teach eight-week courses and receive $50/hour for teaching + additional

CHELSEA HOUSE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

Chelsea House is a non-profit, faith-based, organization that provides transitional housing. Chelsea House is the home specifically for displaced women. In addition, Chelsea House offers various outreach programs to help the community, such as a food pantry, mentoring, and more. They have 2 thrift stores, 3 transitional homes, and various outreach opportunities. They have volunteer opportunities for student groups as well as individuals. Here are some of the ways volunteers can help:

• Organize a donation drive (food pantry, consumables, laundry supplies, cleaning supplies, etc.) • Assist w/ thrift store setup/management/ retailer, business management, customer service, signage, merchandising • Assist w/maintaining donor database through data entry, creating reports/gathering stats • Assist w/ grant writing • Assist w/ marketing, public relations, development campaigns • Assist w/ graphic design, IT, website, social media, video, publications, design annual calendar • Assist w/ meals for transitional homes and/or for large benefit dinner such as the one on Dec 8 where we plan for over 1,000 attendees. • Assist w/ projects that involve; carpentry projects, design/repair at transitional home as well as thrift store locations. • Assist w/ procurement campaign to obtain donation items for thrift stores as well as needed items for the ministry.

WESTMINSTER OAKS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY Bingo callers needed & Bingo helpers: Every Monday and Wednesday evenings—5:15pm to 6:30pm at Westminster Oaks, volunteers are needed to help residents with dementia. Outdoor Cookout for Health Center Residents: On Friday, October 9, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, volunteers will be needed to help push wheelchairs to the picnic area. Second Annual Storytelling Festival: The Second Annual Storytelling Festival will be Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6. Volunteers are needed to push wheelchair residents to festivities. The festivities will last all day on both days with pancake breakfast on Friday, November 6 at 8:00am. 10-15 volunteers are needed each day, taking shifts as your schedule permits. Carpool wherever possible. National Active Aging Week: Volunteers are needed to act as hosts and hostesses assisting people to various activities, handing maps, assisting wheelchair residents to navigate through the festivities. National Active Aging Week is Monday, September 28 through Friday, October 2 from 9:00am to 4:00pm every day.

VILLAGE VOLUNTEERS Village Volunteers partners with NGOs that support grassroots economic growth to sustainably reduce poverty. As a volunteer, you will develop and use appropriate curriculum available to you through the online resource library to coach local entrepreneurs on developing business and marketing plans, and teach simple bookkeeping. UNITED AGAIN INEQUITIES IN DISEASE United Against Inequities in Disease (UAID) is a national non-profit student organization with over 2,500 members. UAID empowers students and communities across the United States to eliminate health inequities (unjust and preventable differences in health outcomes between groups of people). As a public health organization dedicated to long-term sustainability and impact, UAID leads innovative community projects throughout the country. These projects are a central aspect of each chapter’s activities and include a community health needs assessment, collaborative program development, implementation, data collection, and evaluation. At a national level, UAID hosts an annual symposium, publishes a journal on health and social justice, and organizes webinars and trainings. Visit uaid.org for more details. CGI U 2016

The CGI U 2016 meeting will take place at UC Berkeley next spring from April 1-3, 2016. The ninth annual CGI U meeting, hosted by President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton, will gather more than 1,000 innovative student leaders to make Commitments to Action that address some of the world's most pressing challenges. More than $750,000 in funding will be available to select CGI U 2016 students to help them turn their ideas into action. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the CGI U meeting in order to apply. Change Corps is looking for talented Change-makers for their 1 year, paid, full-immersion training academy in grassroots organizing for activists. Organizers receive eight weeks of classroom training and spend most of the year gaining hands-on field experience working to make a difference on issues like women’s rights, gun violence, immigration reform, voting rights, marriage equality, and money in politics. Organizers will work on three to five different campaigns throughout the year in cities across the country, providing critical field support for partner groups leading the charge on these issues and many more.
