We welcome Father John Bain, presiding at a couple of our Masses this Sunday. Father John is a Retired Diocesan priest and I am grateful that he can help out while I help lead the Engaged Encounter Retreat this weekend. Welcome Fr. John!

I have had a few questions about the outstanding debt in the parish so I would like to share how it is structured and my long term plan for payment. I recall Fr. Tom Czeck touring our parishes in the diocese to rally support for the retrofit and renovation that needed to be done at the Cathedral. That raised approximately $1,390,000 and was a great help. The balance remaining to date on the total loan for the work done is $2,652,384. This is a large sum which, along with accruing interest in nor-mal circumstances, would be extremely difficult to pay off. In light of that, last year Bishop Calvo, with the advice of the Diocesan Finance Council, and approval of the Cathedral Parish Corporation Board, restructured the debt over a 30-year period. $500,000 of that debt is being paid at a very rea-sonable 2% interest. We currently make monthly payments on that amount of $1,848.10. The re-maining balance of our loan is held interest free and will be due and payable at the conclusion of the 30 years, October 1, 2047. Funds raised through our special collection taken up every other month go directly to pay down the principal balance on the $500,000 and will reduce the length of time pay-ments will be required on it. A reasonable question would be, how will the parish be able to make that large, remaining pay-ment of over $2,000,000 in 30 years? In the last couple of years, our parish has been blessed to re-ceive two large bequests, one from the Richard Nolan estate in the sum of $524,000 & another from the Tacchino Family estate in the sum of $201,000. The bulk of these funds will be placed in the Catholic Community Foundation, a separate corporation that holds and invests funds for other enti-ties in the Diocese such as Catholic Charities of Northern NV and Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. We’ll be able to earn a much higher return on this money for 30 years and I am confident that the parish will then have sufficient funds to pay off the loan in 2047. In the meantime, extra funds raised through our special collection will continue to be applied directly to the principal on the interest baring loan. Our parish Finance Council has approved this plan so we will take it to our an-nual parish corporation board meeting next week. I want to thank all of you who are so faithful in your contributions that help keep this debt manageable and still allow us to care for the ongoing needs of the parish. May you be blessed in return. We pray special blessings upon the Nolan and Tacchino families and all who remember the Cathedral in their estate planning.

Me han hecho algunas preguntas sobre la deuda pendiente en la parroquia, así que me gustaría compartir cómo está estructurada y mi plan de pago a largo plazo. Recuerdo que el Padre Tom Czeck visitó las parroquias de la Diócesis para reunir apoyo para la modernización y renovación que debían realizarse en la Catedral. Se recaudaron aproximadamente $1,390,000 y esto fue de gran ayuda. Hasta la fecha, el saldo restante del préstamo total por el trabajo realizado es de $2,652,384. ISSUES OF LIFE, PEACE & JUSTICE

As we move closer to the mid-term elections in this country and are called upon to make our voting deci-sions in light of our faith and morals via a well-informed conscience, prayerfully and responsibly, let us listen to both Scripture and to our Teaching. St. Paul reminds us in today’s second reading to expect “to find grace for timely help” in our prayer. The U.S. Bishops offer guidance in The Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. “‘If indeed ‘the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of poli-tics,’ the Church ‘cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice.’ So writes Pope Fran-cis quoting Pope Benedict XVI. Our nation faces many political challenges that demand well-informed moral choices.

The Common Good – is comprised of ‘the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily.’ Human dignity is respected and the common good is fostered only if human rights are protected and basic responsibilities are met. Every human being has a right to life, a right to religious freedom, and a right to have access to those things required for human decency food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing. Corre-sponding to these rights are duties & responsibilities to ourselves, to our families, and to the larger society.

The economy must serve people, not the other way around. An economic system must serve the dignity of the human person and the common good by respecting the dignity of work and protecting the rights of workers. Economic justice calls for decent work at fair, living wages, a broad and fair legalization pro-gram with a path to citizenship for immigrant workers, and the opportunity for all people to work together for the common good through their work, ownership, enterprise, investment, participation in unions, and other forms of economic activity. Workers also have responsibilities—to provide a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay, to treat employers and coworkers with respect, and to carry out their work in ways that contribute to the common good. Workers, employers, and unions should not only advance their own interests but also work together to advance economic justice and the well-being of all.

An important part of The Common Good is to remember that we have a duty to care for God’s crea-tion, which Pope Francis refers to in Laudato Si’ as ‘our common home.’ We all are called to be careful stewards of God’s creation and to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for vulnerable human beings now and in the future. Pope Francis, consistent with St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, has lifted up pollution, climate change, lack of access to clean water, and the loss of biodiversity as particular challenges. Pope Francis speaks of an ‘ecological debt’ owed by wealthier nations to developing nations.

Solidarity – is ‘a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to . . . the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.’ It is found in ‘a commitment to the good of one’s neighbor with the readiness, in the Gospel sense, to ‘lose oneself’ for the sake of the other instead of ex-ploiting him, and to ‘serve him’ instead of oppressing him for one’s own advantage.’ We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. Our Catholic commit-ment to solidarity requires that we pursue justice, eliminate racism, end human trafficking, protect human rights, seek peace, and avoid the use of force except as a necessary last resort. In a special way, our soli-darity must find expression in the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable.
