I managed to catch up on my emails and cataloguing and work on Lawrence Otis’ April 2013 disc of data. I did not manage to finish it but was able to add a huge amount to our census collection for 1870 to 1940 mainly for descendants of the WHITLOCK01 & 54 families. Lots of additions to the Certificate collection as well for these two families. I continue to work on the English census files and am currently working my way through 1871 London. I notice this census includes a lot of places that on earlier census’ were in Surrey and Kent. So far I have 108 images and still have more to do. John Cook continues to work on the delaBeche family in the 1200's & 1300's and recently acquired a Deed from the time of King Henry III (1257). It is beautifully written in Latin and relates to a Manor called “la beche” in the parish of St.Giles Cripplegate in London (R3715). The name remains to this day as Beech St and Beech Lane in Cripplegate. John is working on the translation from Latin but the deed is between Henry delaBeche son of Geoffrey delaBeche, Tanner and Richard Bonaventure. There is also mention of John delaBeche. We are assuming these persons are relatives of the WHITLOCK02H family but will need more information to determine how they are connected. Our Whitlock YDNA project continues to yield results. The latest received were from a member of WHITLOCK18 family who descend from William Whitlock (1680's?-1756) of Devizes, Wiltshire (WHITLOCK69). Plus results from a member of the WHITLOCK20 family who descends from Elisha Whitlock (1670's-1727) of Witney, Oxfordshire. Both are Haplogroup are “E-L117” which is very rare in Britain and is mainly concentrated in West Africa with some movement into Morocco and Southern Spain. The story of how these families arrived in Devizes and Witney pre 1700 will be an interesting one if we can ever figure it out. There are so many interesting possibilities including a possible survivor of the ill fated Spanish Invasion of 1588, an early trader or sailor from Spain or Morocco etc. The results show these two families only share 32 of 37 YDNA markers so while they are likely related it is pretty distant. Our next result will be from the WHITLOCK64 family that descends from Lot Whitlock (1792?-1864) of Georgia and South Carolina. A descendant has submitted his test and we are looking forward to receiving those results. As in the last issue, many of the Reference items are census extracts and I will skip those numbers as they are more easily accessed through the county census files. Other items of interest in this issue include: R3666 an on-line book about the Old Meeting House in Mansfield, Nottingham and the non-conformist ministers John Whitlock (1625-1708) and John Whitlock Jr. (1661-1723) who helped found it. R3691is a copy of the beautifully painted Whitlock Coat of Arms granted in 1592 to Richard Whitlock (1565-1624) of Prussia very kindly donated by William Abel Whitlock. Unfortunately when Bill acquired these from the College of Arms in 1977 they attributed them incorrectly to Richard Whitlock (1533-1570) of London. (See a transcript of this Grant of Arms in the December 2013 issue). My thanks to Judy Lakkis for her in depth update to the Whitelocks of Maryland family (W57) (X7552) that filled in blanks and corrected several mistakes in this chart. I always appreciate people who take the time to explain why things are incorrect and make our collection more accurate. The family group sheets relating to the family of Whitlock Waley (W09) received from Darel E. Paul added great detail to this part of the family. Malcolm Whitlock has also been working through sections of the WHITLOCK51 family that went to Scotland and bringing them up to date and filling in the gaps. Much appreciated. Bob Green wrote a very interesting email regarding a British RAF pilot Robert Whitlock who died in Lebanon June 16,1944 during the Second World War (X7591). Robert continued to fly his crippled plane until all his crew had time to escape. Bob’s father was one the crew and he is putting together a book to honor Robert Whitlock who gave his own life to save his mates. I was not able to place Robert in our Whitlock Family Newsletter

records and hope we will be able to do so.

Jerry Whitlock has been sending in information and photographs regarding the Whitlock Cordage Companyof New York and his father and grandfather (W16) and I look forward to adding more to our files.

I am still about 600 behind in printing the Certificates in the Newsletter so many of the new additions to ourfiles have not shown yet. I will work my way through them eventually. The latest ones printed are mainlyfrom Dorset.

Welcome to the new subscribers and thanks to everyone who renewed their subscription for another year -all very much appreciated.

Patrick and I have been taking annual treks to Springfield, Missouri each summer to visit his elderly Auntbut unfortunately she died recently. She was 90 and still living in her own home and still driving so wasactive right to the end. We will miss her. On our trips across the country we have tried to make contact withas many Whitlock researchers as we can. Last year we stopped in Wichita, Kansas to meet John LeslieWhitlock and this year to hope to get together with Bill Lindsey of Little Rock, Arkansas. On trips south wealways try to visit with Edith Carlson and her husband in Eagle Point, Oregon. Always interesting visits andgreat to hear the research adventures first hand.

This issue includes a couple of wills I collected in Salt Lake City last year. They trace a part of the familythat left Devon in the 1800's and headed north to Gloucestershire. It was interesting to review some of thematerial received in the 1970's that these Wills related to.

Hope you enjoy this issue and have a great summer.

RALPH WHITLOCK (1914-1995) - REMEMBEREDThe following is taken from www.parliament.uk the official record of Parliament in the UK. It relates to theserious flooding issues that have plagued Britain and continue to do so:

13 Mar 2003 : Column 491

I should like to take a short trip down memory lane. A remarkable author called Ralph Whitlock was born inthe village of Pitton and many years later died in the neighbouring village of Winterslow. In 1988, he wrote abook about life in the villages on the edge of Salisbury plain. I shall quote one passage, which states:

"More than twenty years have now elapsed since the springs last broke in Pitton. The water-table in thechalk has evidently been sinking steadily. New residents tend to be sceptical about the tales of floods, and itis difficult to believe them.

The senior citizens who remember them well regard wet summers and wetter autumns with hopefulanticipation: "I hope I live long enough to see the springs down just once more!" they say. It would, theyfeel, be a just nemesis falling on those who ignored their advice and built new houses on sites which wereonce flooded regularly.

But the years pass and the springs stay well below the surface. It is unlikely that they will be seen again."

He was wrong. We need to remember that in the 1960s this country's climate was unusually dry. In thatperiod, many planning authorities and river boards allowed houses and industrial estates to be built on floodplains. That is at the root of many of the current problems.

One of the saddest examples can be found in the village of Pitton. Ralph Whitlock told me that one could tellwhen it was going to flood there by checking the black stone 4 ft from the top of the well at Box cottage. When the water reached that black stone, the village would flood three days later. Box cottage has gone now.The land has been built over. The well is no more. The village floods, heavily and regularly.

Flooding is a tremendous problem, but some really quite simple solutions have hardly been touched ontoday. Tom Ridout, clerk of Allington parish council, wrote to me on 10 January. The matter could not havebeen put better. Mr. Ridout said that changing weather patterns and increased river flows were crucialfactors, and added:

"If this calamity is not to recur annually serious forethought and expensive measures must be taken toquickly improve maintenance of the river—dredging, clearing of weed, clearing of banks, raising bunds, raising bridges where they have a dam effect, etc. This will require a national initiative.

At the local level, the parish council are constantly chiding their masters over matters of basic maintenance.Ditch clearing, weed cutting, drain emptying, etc. Though these factors may not have an influence on the fullmeasure of these floods there can be no doubt that regular basic maintenance has a part to play. The localauthority are ever ready to issue glossy brochures and send out wordy consultation documents and letters butslow to send men regularly, with tools, to do what needs to be done. Particularly this is so in the countrysidewhere so often the inhabitants are at the very end of the queue for resources."

I therefore commend Wiltshire county council for reintroducing the ancient concept of lengthsmen who areattached to a village so many weeks a year and go round doing just that. It is no good weeping over the factthat our farmers no longer have a surplus of labour who used to spend the growing months ditching. They nolonger ditch because there are no longer people to ditch.13 Mar 2003 : Column 492

Ralph Whitlock is part of our WHITLOCK51 family and was the author of more than 100 books, mainly onrural issues. I came to know Ralph from an article I read in the “Field” magazine in 1967. I wrote to himenquiring about his Whitlock family and started a correspondence that continued for nearly thirty years until

his death in 1995. I credit Ralph with getting mestarted on the quest that resulted in the WhitlockFamily Association and more than forty five years ofresearch into the Whit(e)lock families and theirdescendants.

Ralph was very proud of his heritage and the fact hispart of the Whitlock family had lived in the samevillage for over 400 years. Ralph believed in thecollection and recording of knowledge and thepassing on that knowledge to each successivegeneration. He used his skills as a writer tocontribute a vast repository of knowledge. He wrotea weekly article for the local newspaper for overfifty-five years and used this as a base to write manyof his books. He not only knew how daily lifeworked in his village and country surrounding it, heresearched the history and understood why villagelife worked the way it did. I remember him writingto me about one of the Whitlock holdings in Pittonthat linked two sets of fields at opposite ends of thevillage. Throughout the seasons, the owner could beobserved driving his horses and sheep through thevillage from one field to the other. They had beenfarmed as one unit as long as he could remember. His research revealed that the two properties hadbecome linked in the 1600's and had remained so for400 years.

The item from the Parliament records would pleaseRalph and also sadden him. In so many cases thewealth of knowledge built up over centuries is allthere but not consulted or worse consulted and thenignored as the countryside evolves to accommodatethe growing population. Unfortunately we likely allcan think of examples of this occurring all over theworld and still occurring!! Ralph’s contribution washuge and it lives on and it is nice to see from time totime that it is recognized. Our thanks to Malcolm Ralph Whitlock & his pet badgerWhitlock for sending this item in. WEBBER, MADGE, JOHNS CONNECTIONSThe following was received from Myrtle (Madge) Johns and was written by her uncle Walter WebberMadge (1851-1937)

Written August 13, 1894

Father left Devonshire, England, in a miserable, unseaworthy sailing vessel in the summer of 1849 withmother, sisters Frances, Lydia Mary, Ann Elizabeth and brothers Silas Walter and Philip Thomas Webberand our cousin Mary Murley. It took three months to cross the Atlantic. Brother Samuel was born off theN.S. Coast on September 9th 1849. Father walked from Quebec City to what is now Exeter, Ontario. Hebought 100 acres in Usborne Township, Huron County where a log cabin had been built in a ten acreclearing in the hard wood forest.

The house had a large room which was used for parlor, dining room and kitchen and two bed-rooms on theground floor. The ladder led upstairs where there were two other rooms. The ladder was fastened betweenthe joists during the day. Year by year the clearing extended and cultivation increased. Every spring maplesugar and syrup were made and some I think sold.

Here in 1851, October 3rd, I Walter Madge was born. I afterwards added the name Webber to my name sothat father would not get my love-letters. Two years after me Paul was born and three years thereafter MaryCatherine and again two years our baby sister Jennie (Harriet Jane) was born.

Written from a letter sent me by sister Jennie dated December 11, 1888.

Mother’s grandfather Webber was called John. He had a cork leg. He dealt in cattle. He was quite wealthy, being able to buy a manor of land. He gave each of his four daughters a farm. Their names were Grace,Dorothy, Elizabeth, and Ann. Grandfather Webber was the only son. His name was Thomas. He had twosons and three daughters, John, Ann, Mary, Elizabeth and Thomas. John Webber married Jane Madge andAnn Webber was married to Richard Raymond. Mary Webber was married to our father Walter Madge onDecember 31, 1838. Elizabeth Webber was married to Henry Whitlock, a Baptist minister and ThomasWebber married Harriet Allen. Grandmother Webber’s maiden name was Ann Brawn. She was of awealthy family and her mother’s son was an English cleryman. Others of the family were merchants.Mother’s great-grandmother’s maiden name was Mary Parden. On both sides of our house our ancestorswere Devonshire and mother does not know that their ancestors for generations had been anything else.

SOURCE: R0066-----

Henry Whitlock who married Elizabeth Webber is part of the WHITLOCK01 family. (See his Will and theWill of his son Henry Thomas Wyckliffe Whitlock in this issue).

There are several Whitlock connections with the Webbers, Madges & Johns families. Myrtle (Madge)Johns (1884-1977) who compiled this information in the 1960's was married to Alfred Edward Johns whosegrandmother was Eliza Whitlock whose sister Ann Whitlock was married to Thomas Whitlock the brother ofthe above Henry Whitlock.

Myrtle and Alfred’s son Martin Welsey Johns was married to Margaret Hilborn whose grandmother wasAnne Brook Whitlock whose family was also from Langtree, Devon. Thus the Webber, Madge and Johnsfamilies were totally inter-related with the Whitlocks of Devon.

MERCHANT TAYLORS’ SCHOOL - FOUNDED1561

Between 1574-1782 several members of the Whitlock family in Londonattended Merchant Taylors’ School. When Joan (Colte) Whitlock’s husbandRichard died in 1570 while on a trip to purchase wine and cloth in Burgundy,Joan invested the funds her husband left her wisely and by the time her sonswere grown she had the funds available to ensure they were well educated. Atthis time this meant attending Merchant Taylors’ School for boys aged about10 to 18.

Founded by Sir Thomas White (1492-1567) in 1561, he provided that pupilsfrom this school could be nominated to attend St.Johns college, Oxford whichhe also founded. This access to Oxford ensured the new school would attractstudents from the country’s gentry. Sir Thomas also chose the staff for hisnew school wisely.

The first Headmaster was Richard Mulcaster (1531-1611). His theories on the education of children werewell ahead of their time. He felt the schools should be situated close to nature and that children learnedthrough play and sports and interaction with the countryside. At this time Latin and Greek were thelanguages of education and Richard Mulcaster was instrumental in raising the profile of the Englishlanguage and insisting it be codified and taught as Latin was.

He also took the game boys played kicking a ball about and organized the boys into teams and introduced theconcept of referees and coaches to games. He felt it promoted both health and strength. Richard Mulcastergave the name “football” to the game. The concepts of referees and coaches were unknown until RichardMulcaster introduced his students to them and wrote about them.

Sir James Whitlock (1570-1632) talks about he and his elder brother Edmund being sent from about age 10to Merchant Taylors’ school and learning under Richard Mulcaster. Latin, Greek and Hebrew were thelanguages of education with further study at Cambridge or Oxford. Sir James was also instructed in music, both voice and playing instruments. There was a annual event in which the students presented plays to thecourt of Queen Elizabeth. James felt this experience taught him “good behaviour and audacitye”. Hethrived in this environment and on June 11,1588 was elected from the school to attend St.John’s college, inOxford. He went on to become a lawyer and later a Judge. He mentions that the first summer at St.Johnscollege “was the terrible shew of the sea armada from Spayne, whiche was a little distemper to the quietcourse of studyes, the countryes being all up in armes.”

James’ brother Edmund went to Cambridge after leaving Merchant Taylors’ in 1581. He then attendedLincoln’s Inn to become a lawyer but left and traveled widely in Europe for about twelve years. He becamethe captain of band of soldiers in France and was known as Captain Whitlock from that point. His friendshipwith the Earl of Essex led to his being implicated in both the 1601 plot against Queen Elizabeth and the 1605Guy Fawkes Gunpowder plot.

The next to attend Merchant Taylors’ was Sir James’ cousin Richard Whitlock in 1603. He became awealthy merchant in London and acquired the Manor of Beches from his cousin William Whitlock. He wasthe grandfather of James Whitlock (1650?-1716) who went to Virginia.

From 1616-1620 Sir James’ son Bulstrode was a student at Merchant Taylors’. Bulstrode recounts in hisDiaries that he was chosen to negotiate a peace agreement between the students of Merchant Taylors’ and St.Pauls whose competition had led to numerous street riots. Bulstrode “made a Latin Oration, setting forth themiseries of Civill warre, & the benefits of peace, and propounds a firme amity, with a League offensive &defensive betwixt those two smalle Commonwealths the Schools” The proposal was accepted by bothparties and the “war” between the schools brought to an end. Bulstrode comments that this event could betaken as an omen for the life he was to live later. Bulstrode became a lawyer and a diplomat was theAmbassador to Sweden during the Civil War. He attended and recorded many of the negotiations betweenKing Charles and Oliver Cromwell. He comments that the plays and “publique shews” put on by the schoolin which he participated taught him elocution and behaviour and gave him the confidence to be the publicfigure he became. Bulstrode also went from Merchant Taylors to St. Johns College, Oxford.

There is a James Whitlock who attended 1706-08 who we have not yet been able to place.

The last two Whitlocks to attend Merchant Taylors’ School were Peter Whitelock b.1736 and his sonRichard Hutchins Whitelock (1772-1833). Peter was a student 1744-49 and Richard 1782-89. Peter lived inSt.Leonard’s Shoreditch, London and his son Richard became a minister at Charlton on Medlock,Lancashire. Richard married Frances Storer and their son Hugh Anthony Whitelocke went to live inJamaica.

The school has survived, moving in 1933 out of London to Hertfordshire and it remains one of the top 10private boys schools in England. The influence the school had on the Whitlocks who attended is reflected intheir accomplishments throughout their lives.
