It is going to take some years to organize all this material and proof read it with the 20,000 entries currently in the card files but it is an enormous step forward and is already yielding results. The ability to search the files for non-Whitlock names is a big plus that we were unable to do until now. I am hoping to spend a little money to have tile data base files set up properly in the beginning and enable us to make the best use of them. The terrific news I started my last Newsletter with, continues.

I mentioned in December, several new sources of information that were going to be availableto organizations such as ours that are looking for every reference to a particu1ar name. I willbring you up to date on what has transpired over the past few months.

First, my thanks to those of you who have access to this material and offered to help with

copying it onto disk. In the end Ruby Pantalone was able to copy the complete American andCanadIan International Genealogical Index (IG!) and I did the rest of the British one myself. This means we now have easy access to every Whitlock and Whitelock in the IGI and usingthe word processing program, Word Perfect, we can search for any name listed in seconds!T

In addition I copied all the Whitlock/Whitelocks from the U.S. Social Security files. These

files list every American who had a Social Security number and who has died. The informationgiven is the date of birth (month, day & year), state of re~istration, date of death (month &year) and state of death. Lastly, I finally had the remaining files converted from the old Apple computer system so nowhave both the Marriages and the Wills on the new system. These two items still have to becopied into the new data base files but that should go fairly smoothly.

To give you an idea of the amount of information we have added to the files in the past fewweeks I have done a list of the number of pages and bytes of information each file included:

To put this in perspective, since March 1985 I have entered 91 pages of marriages and willsinto the computer. At this rate in the last few weeks we have saved 106 years worth of data

entry time by being able to transfer this information directly from the Church of the LatterDay Saints files into our computer system.

In the meantime, as you can see from the Additions Lists in this issue, terrific materialcontinues to pour in. We have even had several break-throughs since the last Newsletter.

Marianne Whitlock of Essex, England and Ted Whitlock of Raymore, Saskatchewan havefound they are descended from the same Chelsea family. Arvilla Heard Corey finally foundher missing link and it connected her husband's family to the WHITLOCK25 chart, TheWhitlocks of Virginia #3 that goes back to the 1650's.

Some Family Bible records sent in by Pam Hallock back in 1986 gave Mattie Ruth Whitlockthe proof slie needed to connect her husband's family to the WHITLOCK09 chart, TheWhitlocks of Connecticut #1 through Samuel son of Joseph & Permelia (Wasson) Whitlock.

Those of you interested in the Tennessee Whitlocks will be interested in the long letter fromBonnie Upton Davis (Xll03) that gathers together in one place a terrific collection ofinformation regarding Thomas & Susannah (Webb) Whitlock and their connection to ThomasK Whitlock (1813?-1867) & Jackson (John W. ) Whitlock. I have entered all this informationinto a file for each person and will continue to add any other clues until we figure out how thispart of the family connects together.

An interesting item (X1097) relates to a prayer book from the 1600's owned by a ThomasWhitlock in 1755, possibly Thomas Whitlock of Witney, Oxfordshire;

I was sent a Minstrel Show program (R469) by a member of the B.c. Genealogical Society asit mentions Billy "Hamhock' Whitlock. Bil1y Whitlock was one of the originators of theMinstrel Show format back in the 1840's. I would be interested if anyone has any furtherinformation about him.

My thanks to everyone who shared their "finds", both from their own family and miscellaneousmaterial that might benefit others.

Welcome to all the new subscribers and welcome back to all of you who have renewed for thecoming year. We have a record 100 subscribers already, this year. We also had a record

number of gift subscrwtions this year so I hope you WIll enjoy the Newsletters. If you haven'trenewed yet, a subscnption form is enclosed and I hope you will be able to support ourresearch for another year.

For the benefit of new subscribers - please feel free to request copies of any material listed in

the Newsletters. I do ask one stamp for each four pag;es of matenal requested. You can tellhow many pages each item is by the number after the 't' ego X1095/20 IS twenty pages inlength. lA reminder to our subscribers from the United States - postage to Canaaa is now 40cents!)

I have updated the list of subscribers and will enclose a copy with this issue as I know many ofyou appreciate being able to write directly to others researching the same families. Hopefullyas we grow we will be able to hold more mini-reunions such as -Irish one we had a few yearsago. There is nothing like getting together, face to face, to compare notes and family stories.

If the rest of this year continues the way the first few months have gone, 1991 will be a year ofdiscoveries for all of us. Good luck.

WHITLOCK/CLARKRuby Pantalone brought the following item to my attention just before Christmas and Ithought you might be interested in it:

On December 24, 1922 Miss Zylphia Eunice Whitlock and Mr. Levi Lafayette Clark weremarried in Lamar County, Texas. They are still married and living at 1403 Sunset Boulevard,Odessa, Texas, 79763, after sixty-eight years of marriage!!

"THE FIFTY"This May, 4th marks 160 years since "The Fifty" sailed away from Bideford, Devon on the

barque, Bolina", 4th of May, 1831 and entered Millsborough Bay, Prince Edward Island fourweeks later, the 5th of June. After landing at Little York the craft stayed ten days, moving onto Winsloe Rodd and from there leaving for Quebec. Sixty-one passengers had been on boardand family stories say that fifty of those sixty-one were Whitlocks or theIr relatives, all from theLangtree area of Devon.

Several of the families that had disembarked in P.E.I. soon left the Island and settled inOntario and Ohio. William and Isaac Whitlock made Exeter, Huron County, Ontario their

home after walking over a hundred miles from Port Hope where they had landed. RichardWhitlock with thirteen children chose Orange Township, Cuyahoga County, near Cleveland,Ohio and we know from old letters that several others settled near Chagrin Falls, Ohioincluding the Pugsley and Stoneman families.

Charles Whitlock, who married Mary Grace Allin remained on Prince Edward Island and diedin mysterious circumstances at sea in 1855 (see Vo1.5 No.3, Sept.1986). Their sons, Isaac,

Jesse and Edwin were born in England and a daughter, Rebecca born in P.E.I., died agetwelve in 1845 from burns following an explosion of gun powder. Isaac had a family of fivedaughters and one son, Isaac. The girls married and remained resident; the father died andthe son, a blacksmith, moved to Guelph, Ontario. Edwin married Sarah Smith in 1852 andthey had seven sons and one daughter. A second daughter was born seven months afterEdwin's death in 1872 but died in 1880. All others married and settled on the Island.

Jesse Whitlock was born at Langtree, Devon November 21, 1824 and came with his parents to

P.E.I. as one of the "The Fifty". He became a Bible Christian Minister and in 1854 marriedMary Martha Metherall the daughter of Rev. Francis Metherall. In the book "The WestCountry Preachers" by Michael J.L. Wickes there is a quote by Rev. Francis Metherall thatdescribes the conditions the early settlers found in P.EJ. "Sometimes the roads are in such astate that a man could not travel at all without the assistance of a horse. I travelled on foot

the first three winters that I was on this Mission, but I found it very great slavery. I have oftensuffered much, and one time was likely to lose my life in a storm". I must have been vastlydifferent from his home in Morwenstow, Cornwall or his first Ministry on Guernsey Island in1827! "

Jesse & Mary Martha Whitlock had six children, three sons and

three daughters. The eldest, Francis Metherall Whitlock wasborn in P.E.I. in 1855 and also became a Bible Christian

Minister, later settling in Ohio and joining the CongregationalChurch at the time tne Union. His parishes includedMonroeville, Indianapolis, Cleveland and lastly Marietta, Ohiowere he was when the United States entered the Second World

War in 1941. In his eighties Rev. Whitlock began acorrespondence with hISdistant cousin Leslie Whitlock ofHolsworthy, Devon that continued until the end of the war in1945. This wonderful collection of letters is in the WhitlockFamily Association files (see REF105).

There are still descendants of "The Fifty" in Prince Edward Island but many have followed theearlier generations and spread out across Canada and the Northern United States.

HORSE THIEF!One of the commonest excuses for not getting down and doing the work to determine whoyour ancestors were is "I'll probably just find I am descended from someone hung as a horsethief'. Well you can all quit now because Janis Kirby of London, Ontario has found ours!!

Among the early Quarter Session records for Kent are the following entries:

July 3, 1598

"Edward Stevens of Greenhithe butcher, William Leeke & George Whitlocke also of

Greenhithe butchers for entering close of Wm Brockman at Lympne & taking 2 horses onebay & one white worth __ (Stevens found guilty - Leeke "s01it")"

"(The saI¥e) for entering close of Wm ~enkins 1;1tBurmarsh & taking a bay colored geldingworth 6 h. (Stevens & Leeke found gUIlty,Whltlocke does not appear.)" .

September 19, 1598

"Info of Wm Brockman of Newington next Hythe gent. re theft of cattle by Wm Loache, Geo.Whightloke & Edw. Stevens"

September 26, 1598, Maidstone, Kent

"Edward Stephens, Wm Leeke & George Whitlocke all of Greenhithe butchers on July 3, 1598broke into 8i entered a close of Wm Brockman gent. at Lympne & stole 2 horses, 1 coloredGay & other whitishe worth 6 pounds. Plead not guilt.GUIlty to be hanged."

December 19, 1598

"Statement of Leakes re Whitelocke now in gaol in Canterbury, giving description of him"

George Whitlocke's fate is not clearly recorded so a little mystery still remains ...
