Basic Heat Trace Design Considerations

• Hazardous / Non Hazardous – Will determine materials (Class 1, Class 2, Div 1, Div 2, Certifications – UL, CSA, ATEX, etc.)

• Physical Location – Will determine freeze point, minimum ambient temperature and wind chill

• Pipe dimensions, Tanks, Flanges, Fittings, Instruments – Will determine amount of materials to be used

• Maintain Temperature – Will define heat loss and what amount of watts/ft are required

• Power Available – 120 VAC to 480 VAC - Will determine how long a cable can be run & number of circuits

• Insulation Type and thickness – Will determine the tradeoff between cable watts/ft and type/thickness of insulation.
