PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Jeffrey Israel

This season marked my first as club president, a role which I can say I have thoroughly enjoyed. I honestly believe that it is a real privilege and honour to be so involved with the club. This season’s committee was able to introduce several exciting new initiatives, as well as continuing on the fantastic work initiated by previous committees under the leadership of Jamie Hyams, and before him Paul Fink. Last season the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club (MACC) 1st XI was promoted and played at the exceptionally high standard of Senior A1 within the VTCA. Given this promotion, we are all very proud to finish fifth on the ladder, only one spot outside the finals. The 3rd XI once again made the top four and played finals, but unfortunately they were unable to repeat last season’s heroic win, and instead finished third on the ladder. Congratulations and thanks must be given to all the captains from all the sides. Jonathan Weinstock led the 1st XI, and no doubt his district cricket experiences and his leadership have provided many of the younger players with valuable insight and lessons that will enable them to improve as cricketers of the future. Josh Harris also debuted as 2nd XI captain, proving the perfect man for the role by managing to provide both the competitive edge as well as enjoyment for all players under his leadership. Simon Fisher and Darren Bloch shared the role of captaining the 3rds this season, whilst veteran Jeff Nadelman returned to captain the young guns in the 4th XI. The 5ths had both Michael Caspi and then later in the season Laurie Shneider as captains. We as a club were also extraordinarily lucky to have such experienced and passionate coaches. Troy continued his role as head coach, whilst being ably supported by Mark Simon, Steve Sandor, Joey Silver and the new face around the coaching group Paul Platus. The coaching group’s dedication and commitment to the club can never be over-rated. As players and as a committee we are all really lucky to have such brilliant support and expertise available to us. As with each season’s end, there comes the retirements of some senior players. This season saw the retirement of a legend of the club, Daniel Onas. Daniel’s contribution to the club has been exemplary. He is possibly the greatest all-rounder that has ever played for Maccabi AJAX, and is a five-time Club Champion which puts him in the class of club legends such as Joe Silver and Mike Zemski. As well, Daniel has served on the committee

for a number of seasons, including in the roles of Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President. As he was a leader both on and off the field, Daniel’s retirement will leave a huge gap in the club and will undoubtedly be missed. There are also other retirements this season that are going to provide the younger guys with the opportunity to step up and assume some of the club leadership roles. These players include Jeremy Weiss, Allan Sheffield and Mike Meadows, all of whom have contributed heavily over many years of involvement. I hope and encourage these club greats to still remain associated with the club. Your ability and valuable experience is of immense benefit to the players and the club as a whole. The Past Players’ Association (PPA) has always been a great way for past players to remain in touch with our club, as well as providing some financial support. This season saw a record membership to the PPA. Once again the PPA and family day was a huge success, thanks to the hard work of Adam Lubitz, while helping ensure the ongoing success of the day was the generous sponsorship of the “The Silver Arc”. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Alex Rouditser and his family. This season we had four separate 20/20 matches, including the first ever MACC v Ajax Football Club match. What was particularly pleasing about this season’s PPA and Family Day was that there were over 100 Jewish cricket players all playing cricket in the one park, on the one day, for the one club. This is an achievement that the current committee is extremely proud of.

A special mention and thanks must go to Leon Jacobs who instigated and organised this season’s inaugural Past Players’ Golf Day. Held at Southern Golf Club, this club day was set up as a means to encourage past and current cricket players to interact whilst also trying to encourage the return to the club of the older players, who no longer are able to play cricket. The day was an overwhelming success, with not only current players participating, but also several past players and life members. Mark your diaries now for November 16 2009 for second PPA Golf Day.

This season the MACC held its inaugural President’s Lunch. We took this opportunity to invite and reunite the players who participated in the two premiership sides 25 years ago, in the 1983/84 season. The MACC provided a free lunch where we invited all the old players to come and share their stories from previous seasons. This function was an overwhelming success and the past players really enjoyed the opportunity to reunite and relive their glory days.

Of all the initiatives, I still feel extremely proud of the kosher one. I would like to thank Aaron Adelist for his tireless efforts ensuring its success. It is thanks to his hard work - cooking every single selection BBQ - and the continued support and sponsorship from

Glicks Bakery & Café, that we were once again able to provide free Kosher BBQs for all players to enjoy, and hopefully all the players appreciated Aaron’s efforts every second Thursday throughout the season.

Our club’s continued success relies heavily on the support of the community, and once again we have been extremely fortunate to have such wonderful sponsors to support us. TBM once again was our major sponsor, while this season also saw the James Richardson Group enter into a sponsorship agreement with us. The Gandel Trust continued to provide financial support, as did our other sponsors, including Harris Civil, Building Directions, Korjo, The Silver Arc, LaunchTwo People as well as Glicks Café and the partners for kosher initiative sponsors. This season also saw the introduction of our number one ticket holder – and special thanks go to Morris Majtlis for his sponsorship. These sponsors’ commitment to Jewish sport, and in particular our club, is greatly appreciated by all.

I must also make special mention of the committee and the extremely hard and tireless efforts that each and every single member put in to ensure the continued success of the club. Stepping into the difficult role of club secretary was Brad Abrahams. Dave Majtlis took on the treasurer role. Marc Felman was the vice president, and he was a constant source of support and advice on all issues.

Joel Beebe was the winner of this year’s Kurt Defris award for outstanding service to the club. He thoroughly deserves this award and the associated recognition. Paul Fink was as dedicated and hard-working as ever; his commitment to the club is really inspirational and second to none. Josh Gelfand continued to support Brad throughout the year, helping him adjust to the difficult role of secretary. Simon Fisher continued as the junior club liaison, and his efforts in uniting the two clubs have seen the juniors joining seniors at some selected trainings and BBQ’s, and generally become much more closely aligned. As mentioned, Aaron was brilliant in the kosher and catering role, Jamie provided much needed experience and support, and Barry Kave’s seniority and experience helped guide us through many issues.

There were several new committee members this season. Benny Spicer joined the committee, and amongst other roles, he took on the difficult task of sponsorship. Adam Lubitz organised the PPA day as well as the club party, and Craig Woolf headed up the fundraising efforts, including poker nights, raffles, and the selling of the entertainment books. Dean Kino joined the committee and was able to provide plenty of cricket advice and experience.

I would also like to thank Leon Jacobs for his outstanding efforts this season, Simon Morawetz for his entertaining articles in the Jewish News, and Darren Seidl for his brilliant job as chairman of selectors. Nathan Rothschild was this season’s winner of the Hans Spitz award, awarded to the best clubman. Nathan hosted two poker evenings for the club, he ran presentation night once again with David Majtlis, he was the 1st XI team mascot and manager, and was always happy to assist in any way asked. Dean Wiener put his hand up to assist with the raffle, and once again Hershel Herbst assisted with the continued success of the kosher initiative. I also want to thank the many others who helped out behind the scenes with the PPA, and other club activities and functions.

One of the most personally rewarding aspects of being a part of the club and committee is the friendships that have developed over the time spent together. I really appreciate being made to feel like one of the team, and for that I wish to thank everyone. I look forward to another successful season next year, one hopefully filled with many more highlights and successes.

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Jonathan Weinstock What a great surprise for the 1st XI and the club to be promoted to Senior A1 this year after a disappointing Grand Final defeat the previous year. We all knew that we were good enough and should have been there, so it was a nice reward and definitely refreshing for the boys to get out of South A and have a good crack at Senior A with nothing to lose.

The build up to this year was quite significant, knowing that we had one of the greatest groups of talent the club has seen in a generation play together at the same time at Senior A level, and it was an important year in the club’s history. With our club coach and professional Troy Lamb along with seasoned performers Onas, Gelbart, Litinsky, Rosenthal, Lipsitz and myself along with host of younger talent we were sure to be very competitive. With club legend Dan Onas stepping down as captain after 2 years doing a tremendous job, this was my first year as Skipper and an absolute honour to lead the 1st XI. Going into the season, I firmly believed we had the talent to beat any team in the competition and make the finals. Our primary goal was to make the finals and with the young talent, my goal was to fast track the best young guys through the grades and get them involved in 1st XI cricket and play alongside and learn from our senior guys. As a team, I wanted the group to stay positive and be confident in their abilities. Overall we had a pretty good year but a little inconsistent finishing 5th on the ladder, missing out on the finals. Unfortunately the weather didn’t favour us at times, and we were robbed of a couple of wins with bad weather against Strathmore and Sunshine United. We were definitely the next best team although quite a few points behind 4th. As a club, we gained respect from the competition as a serious contender. We beat a top 4 side, Hoppers Crossing convincingly in a low scoring game, and we also should have beaten the eventual premiers, St Bernard’s, in a tight finish. In addition, we were very competitive against Williamstown, the other grand final contender. Once again this season, we lost a couple of tight matches chasing runs, losing round 1 by 2 runs, and losing to St Bernard’s when we were in a winning position. The standard of competition was a significant step up from South A, with most teams having a much deeper batting and bowling line up along with some seasoned

professionals in the competition including ex-test and past and present first class players. This presented us with a good challenge and an opportunity for us to see how guys would react to tougher situations under pressure. Our stats show that it was definitely harder to make big scores and also take wickets this season. Only myself scored over 300 runs, and 3 other guys over 200, which at least spread the contributions around rather than relying on a couple of run scorers. Bowling wise, wickets were down, with Gelbart and Onas taking the bulk of wickets with over 50 between them, and Lipsitz our next best bowler taking 13. With the poor weather during the season brought some frustrating playing conditions along with curator issues at Albert Park which made it difficult for batsmen. I can understand the frustration also for guys at times who missed out on opportunities due to a shortened year combined with our team of all-rounders which included 7 capable bowlers at times. A tribute should go to retiree and club legend Daniel Onas with the birth of his 2nd child approaching. Dan is a loyal, passionate and selfless clubman who is a tough competitor. Dan’s achievements speak for themselves, but notably, Dan played a year and made his mark at higher honours in 2nd Grade district cricket for Camberwell Magpies. Dan was also picked in the VTCA team of the year which was a nice reward and recognition for his efforts in the VTCA over many years. Dan was a team man all year taking wickets into the wind, bowling long spells with great control of the ball, picking up 26 wickets and also making over 200 runs. Dan was a match winner, and twice picked up 5 wickets in an innings. We wish him well and thank Davina for her support and encouragement. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Dan in years to come. Dave Gelbart had the best season of his career while still missing 2 games. Dave is the ultimate professional and thrives on tough situations under pressure. With Gary Litinsky unable to play half the year, this gave Dave a great opportunity with the new ball. His consistent performances with the bat and ball helped him achieve some great stats, taking 24 wickets and making over 200 runs including a couple of fifties. Dave helped put us in winning positions and got us over the line a couple of times. Look out Ray Saffer – just quietly, my money’s on Dave, and he should poll highly in the Senior A1 vote count. His attitude and belief demonstrates his mental toughness and this is the most valuable asset to any cricketer. Together with Onas, both combined to take 60% of our team’s wickets for the year.

Page 12

We also wish other guys well in their retirements. Jeremy Weiss deserved his spot in the final round after some strong performances in the 2’s and Alan Sheffield will be missed who was unlucky not to break into the team during the year. We also hope to see our big Russian fast bowler Gary Litinsky back bowling smoke again next year. The young guys deserve special mention who debuted in the 1st XI this year. The star being Brad Majtlis, a natural talent and free flowing batsman, who pulverized Cheltenham’s first class pro to all parts of the ground, while also making his first 50 in the 1st XI under pressure in his first game in the 1sts this year to help chase down 300+ at Melbourne high. Rowan Bricker, a class act and possibly our best junior Jewish cricketer, played 7 games for us this year. While Rowan had limited opportunities, he was our best batsman against Beaumaris, and showed us how capable he is against a good attack being thrown into the deep end as night watchman against an angry South African pro fast bowler. Rowan’s footwork and technique are solid, and with the right approach and commitment he will go a long way. Justin Kramersh slotted straight in and took wickets like a seasoned performer. His bowling has matured, and has progressed right through the grades. He bowled consistently well at decent pace with the ability to swing the ball troubling batsmen. Congratulations also to hard worker and club man Adam Lubitz who deserved his promotion, along with Dean Weiner who had a taste of 1st XI cricket. Jonty Rosenthal was our most consistent batsman this year and handled the pressure at 3 extremely well. Jonty was involved in numerous partnerships in tight situations, and must be frustrated having got good starts 8 times out of 11 with 9 scores above 20 this season with only 1 fifty. Jonty is tough to get out with such a solid technique (well done Trev), and is inches away from making big scores consistently. Troy had a disappointing year by his standards, but showed glimpses of his brilliance and class with a 90 against Melbourne High off about 50 balls, when he destroyed their attack and put us in a winning position. Troy has great hands and took some great catches in slips this year. Consistent performers included Hayden Lipsitz who played a key role in the team chipping in when we needed and supported our front line bowlers, unlucky not to have bowled more during the year. Hayden was a team man, and was probably our best at training this year. He also took a spectacular controversial catch against

Page 13: With Compliments - Maccabi · With Compliments The James Richardson Group 35-45 Lithgow Street Abbotsford 3067 Victoria, Australia Ph +61 3 9428 1621 Fax +61 3 9429 1428 jamesrichardson.com.au

Williamstown. Dave Majtlis continues to mature and improve as a cricketer. Opening is the toughest spot to bat, and he took on the quicks and challenging conditions at the top of the order each week with some rewards coming in the final round top scoring against Cheltenham. Dave has all-round ability and also had limited chances with the ball. He is strong mentally, and is a future leader of the club. David Fayman started the year with a bang, helping us knock over Bentleigh in his best spell of the year and bowled brilliantly in tandem with Lipsitz. Fayman is a natural athlete and great future prospect who can swing the ball and also belt the ball at times when he gets going. Fayman will continue to improve and will get plenty of opportunities next season. Thanks also to Daniel Svirskis, Mike Meadows and Gary Litinsky for their contributions who all chipped in at times for the 1st XI during the year.

There were some outstanding contributions and highlights throughout the year.

Almost winning outright against Beaumaris, falling only 2 wickets short with Onas taking 9 wickets for the game.

Defending 117 against a finals side Hoppers Crossing with Gelbart and Onas bowling the team out together in 17 over spells taking 5 wickets each.

Brad Majtlis dispatching a sharp first class bowler, Cheetham all over the ground – one of the best innings ever seen at the club.

Winning against Melbourne High with 7/366 chasing down 313 – a massive win and confidence boost for the club, with Troy’s 90, Gelbart's match winning innings of 69* and Brad Majtlis’ first 50 in the 1st XI.

Jonty’s 79 against Strathmore in tough conditions which eventuated in a wash out.

Match day fines, and enjoying a laugh with the whole group together at the end of each day’s play. I hope the tradition continues. Remembering the stupid stuff is often more memorable than the runs and wickets.

There has been some great support from a number of people who I would like to thanks. Thank you very much to:

Laurie Schneider – for scoring all year. Nathan Rothschild – special mention to our team manager and head of

confectionery. A great club man passionate about the club, who has taken time out to make life easy for the boys in the 1st XI. Thanks for your help on match

days with all the little tasks and for keeping us hydrated and loaded up with plenty of sugar.

Senior players - Troy, Onas, Gelbart, Jonty for their support during the year on and off the field.

Jonty – much appreciated for your help for doing the scores on the internet each week.

Committee guys in particular Jeffa who put his heart and soul into the job in his first year as President. Well done mate.

Selection – Well done Seidl and Josh Harris for your support for me to pick the young guys and get them involved as much as possible. Tough gig Seids, but well handled throughout the year. I enjoyed every session.

Coaching panel – Mark Simon – great job at training once again, Colonel and Joey – a great influence and mentor for many players. Joey you are a superstar and the most valuable asset the club has – the ability to improve any player dramatically in both technical skill and mental approach giving blokes the confidence to succeed. Personally, my game improved more than ever under your guidance and this has made my journey even more enjoyable.

Most importantly, Matti my beautiful fiancée, our number one WAG ticket holder, who came to every game. Sorry for waving at the wrong chick in round 1. I got fined for that along with kissing you at drinks against Melbourne High. You’ve been a great support and very appreciative of the work that goes in to being skipper. I still promise to make a hundred for you! I thoroughly enjoyed the role as Skipper this year, both in a leadership capacity and as a player. We have a fantastic bunch of guys who all get along really well despite the difference in age groups. We enjoyed our time together and improved as cricketers. During an up and down year we can reflect that we all gave it our best, and were extremely competitive at this level. We should be proud of our performances and I hope to see the 1st XI continue to develop new talent. Next year will be an important transition phase and many guys will have the opportunity to step up and be tested. GO Jackas in 09/10.

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Josh Harris

After an up and down year, the 2nd XI finished off the season showing great courage, gaining a lot of respect from the opposition and putting the rest of the competition on notice for next year by defeating the number 1 team comprehensively. It was definitely an unusual year, given the number of wash outs and one day games, not really advantageous for our developing 2nd XI. However, a lot of positives have come out of this year, with a number of talented young guys developing their skills and performing well when given opportunities in the 1st XI. The 2nd XI was a real mix of mature and young guys whom really enjoyed playing a high spirit and competitive brand of cricket. Firstly, I would like to talk about the young guys Adam Lubitz, Dean Wiener, Rowan Bricker and Justin Kramersh. Adam Lubitz at 21 is the most mature, consistent, determined bowler I have played with. Adam when given the ball, most often into the wind, would bowl line and length consistently. He was given a small opportunity in the 1st XI; hopefully it was just a taste of what's in store for his future as a leading senior fast bowler at our club. Dean Wiener returned to our club this year after a stint at district cricket and gave our guys terrific incite as to how to prepare and play cricket at a higher level. Dean is a competitive guy with a lot of passion for the game and I look forward to watching him develop into a 1st XI spinner/all rounder. He proved a couple of times this year, his ability to make runs when required and take wickets at important times. Well done. Rowan Bricker, who only played a handful of games in the 2nd XI before finishing off in the 1st XI, has shown over the past two years how patient, mature, dedicated, determined and talented he is. Every time he steps out to bat, you feel confident that he is going to succeed. Well done Rowan, all the best next season, I'm sure you will excel. After starting the year in the 3rd XI Justin Kramersh came into the 2's in round 3 and bowled 22 overs 3 for 73 on debut and immediately looked more than capable at that level. Justin is a special talent who is eager to learn and has an amazing ability to

perform consistently. After taking 22 wickets Justin was promoted to the 1st XI and continued to excel. Justin is a humble, committed, mature and exciting cricketer, whom I wish all the best for next year and beyond. Well done. Furthermore, I would also like to mention Clinton Bricker, Brandon Freedman and Devan Spilkin. All three have played in the 2nd XI this year and although weren't given many opportunities, they have showed great promise, and are sure to be part of a very exciting group of young guys, who are the future of our club. Now to the older guys Weissy, Sheffa, Svirka and Maggie. Thanks for another enjoyable year. All four of you, have played an integral role in the development of all the young guys. The passion, competitiveness and flare, you all show when you play, makes our Saturdays more enjoyable. Thank you for another supportive year and I hope you can all saddle up and do it all again next season! It has been a real pleasure this year captaining all the guys in the 2nd XI. I hope you guys enjoyed and learnt something about yourselves, teammates and the game that will make you better cricketers in the future. After playing all year with you guys, I am really excited about the current and future prospects for success at this club. Although it was a challenging year given the conditions, we proved to ourselves that we are capable of beating any team and being more than just competitive next season. You all made our club proud in the final round this year, by beating the top side and we were complimented by the opposition captain when he said, "It's a pity you guys aren't in the finals, because you would be a real contender." Good Luck fellas and Thank you!

3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Simon Fisher

The Third XI had a very solid 2008/2009 season. After such a bright first half of the season, the team struggled after the break but progressed through to the finals with some strong performances during the last few games. However, disappointingly the Third XI weren’t able to make it a three-peat after a crushing blow in the semi final.

Thank You: To all the players who represented the Third XI this season, you all did yourselves

proud by all contributing for the team’s success this year. Darren and I were extremely proud of your attitude, performance, spirit and behaviour. It was a pleasure to captain you guys throughout the season.

To Darren Bloch, I thank you for co-captaining the side with me while playing for the 3’s this season.

I also want to thank those players for giving me advice while playing on and off the field.

Thanks to all the boys a part of the Third XI finals squad for playing, training and helping out during the semi final weekend.

I want to thank Darren Seidl for doing such a fantastic job as Chairman of Selectors and giving me advice for the team’s success. Darren did this job fairly and with dedication as he gave up a lot of his time to get all teams organised before each Saturday.

To the other captains Jono Weinstock, Josh Harris, Jeff Nadelman, thanks for all your advice, assistance and support through team selections each week.

Thank you to all the coaches Colonel, Mark, Joey, Troy, Paul and also Phil for all your advice and support throughout the year. Thanks for helping myself and all the players of the club with their skills and knowledge of the game.

Thank you to Jeffa and the committee for all for what you have done this year for the club. Thanks for giving faith in Darren and I to do the job this season. I hope the committee can stay strong and have another successful season next year.

Finally to all the parents, brothers, sisters, girlfriends and friends, thank you for giving all your support on game days to the team this season. The team wouldn’t have been so successful if it wasn’t for all your help and support to the Third XI team.

Captaining this team has been a fantastic learning experience for me in life and cricket situations, especially with the skills of leadership, planning and strategy, and communication. I hope I did an adequate job for the club as I’m grateful for the club for giving me the opportunity to captain a great bunch of guys on and off the field. When Darren and I took the role of being captains of the Third XI this season, it became apparent that the club would want its depth to be strong as our higher XI would move up a grade this season. We both felt it would be great to continue the hard work of the great previous Third XI captain Paul Fink. Yes it would be great to win a back to back to back South C1 premiership for the club, but we thought our main goals for the were to continue to develop the youth of the club and also giving everyone fair go on the field, which was what Finky emphasised last season. We also tried to develop everyone’s games so that they could play higher XI cricket in the future. We also felt that for the team to be successful, everyone had to do their part and rely on just one or two individuals do all the work, which made the team successful on the field. Another goal of ours was for everyone to learn and play to spirit of the game, and finally for all the players to have fun. This season it was awesome to see so many successful performances by our junior players of the club. It was great to see players like Justin Kramersh, Devon Spilkin, Brandon Friedman and Mark Shnider all experience third and higher XI cricket. Also well done for junior players such as Brandon Friedman, Ben Miller, Michael Feiler and Matthew Gamsu, and senior players like Marc Leiba, Richard Laufer and Timmy Freed for all debuting for the Third XI this season. With all these players taking the next step in their cricketing experiences, it shows that the club has good depth and great future. Last Year Darren Bloch was a part of the 2007/2008 Maccabi Ajax Third XI premiership team but struggled throughout the year. This year after a big pre-season Darren showed leadership, commitment and form by dominating the start of the season with the bat. He produced 140 runs in 3 innings at average of over 45 runs. From then on he played in higher XI where he deserved to be and hopefully he will be in the higher XI’s for a long time to come. The bowlers of the Third XI were fantastic throughout the year. Michael Bell had his best season for the club taking 24 wickets at an average of 11.6. His efforts even showed more as he opened the bowling into the wind throughout the year, which is

Page 23: With Compliments - Maccabi · With Compliments The James Richardson Group 35-45 Lithgow Street Abbotsford 3067 Victoria, Australia Ph +61 3 9428 1621 Fax +61 3 9429 1428 jamesrichardson.com.au

not easy for any fast bowler. Clinton Yudelman also had great year as he showed his true class with both bat and the ball. His bowling was very economical all year and also played some outstanding innings with the bat including his half century in the Semi Final. Paul Fink and I had productive years by being our usual selves in taking wickets and being economical at crucial stages of games. However I couldn’t leave out the efforts of Marc Leiba. Marc had an awesome season with the ball as he took 37 wickets at an average of 8.6 in just 9 matches. Marc was fantastic with his orthodox spin bewildered batsman with his flight, dip and turn, and spun us too victory in so many games which included a great victory against Port Melbourne. However it wasn’t just his bowling that did the talking it was his mouth that did it too. Marc was pleasure to play with as he brought the laughter and fun into the team. Well done spin twin I hope you comeback next year and have another awesome season for the club. It was great to see so much youth play in the Third XI this season. Brandon Friedman was a star for the 3’s from his debut to the end of the season. At 14 years of age it was quite incredible to witness his performances opening the batting. He made two half centuries and had an average of 27 with the bat, including being a part some big opening partnerships. It was great for the selectors to also give Brandon some experience playing in the 2’s. I hope Brandon can continue his development and soon see him play First XI cricket for club and be a part of representative squads. Devon Spilkin had great season with the bat as he finally came out his shell. He made the number 3 spot his own as he was solid with the bat all year. He also improved with his keeping as his skills got better and better as the season went on. Mark Shnider also had a solid year for young man to have his first full year with the seniors. He made some big scores for the team and showed a little bit of his potential. Hopefully these two follow their mates’ footsteps as they both got a taste of playing Second XI cricket during. Even though this youngster only played a couple of games in the Third XI, he showed his maturity on the field. At 14 years of age Matthew Gamsu had an awesome debut for the 3’s by top scoring with 43 and taking five dismissals with gloves. Matthew has big future at the club in seasons to come.

The other side of youth is obviously experience and I was indebted to have guys Such as Richard Laufer, Warren Sevel, Ben Fisher, Brad and Jared Abrahams, Josh Gelfand and Joel Beebe around the side. These guys were great as they showed their experience by giving good leadership and advice to the team. I hope these guys keep playing on as they all have a capacity to improve and have huge amounts to offer.

Home & Away Season & Individual Highlights: Darren Bloch’s early season form with scores of 43, 72 and 35 runs. Brandon Friedman’s batting form all year with scores of 56, 40 and 51 runs,

including being involved in opening partnerships of 146 vs. East Malvern and 124 vs. Chelsea.

Marc Leiba stunning form all year by taking 37 wickets including figures of 5/32, 5/82, 4/19 and 4/24

Devon Spilkin’s early season form before going away overseas. The spin twins of Marc Leiba and Simon Fisher combining well all year against

the opposition’s batsmen. Warren Sevel’s 78n/o vs. South Caulfield and 52n/o vs. Hampton. The team’s score of 5/354 vs. East Malvern which included the hitting abilities of

Paul Fink and Clinton Yudelman as they scored 80 runs in just 7 overs. Ben Miller’s debut of taking 5/25 vs. Beaumaris The team’s brilliant efforts against Port Melbourne which included Marc Leiba’s

figures of 5/32. Matthew Gamsu’s magnificent debut vs. Dingley scoring 43 and taking 5

dismissals with the gloves. Michael Bell’s performance against Chelsea taking 6/23 Clinton Yudelman’s brilliant knock of 57n/o vs. Beaumaris in the Semi Final.

In conclusion I would like to congratulate Jono Weinstock and the 1’s squad on a great effort in a higher grade and hopefully next year they can make finals and bring a 1’s premiership to the club. Simon Fisher 3rd XI Captain

4th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Jeff Nadelman After many years on the sidelines I made my come back year as captain of the fourth eleven. I enjoyed this time as captain and hope I added some value to the juniors coming through. The 4th eleven players changed game by game and at times we were lacking in bowlers, batsmen and at times a wicketkeeper, I am proud to say that the juniors who filled in did there best to pick up the slack. I was proud to see after Christmas some of the talented juniors pushed up into the thirds and even the seconds, players like Friedman, Gamsu , Feiler to name a few. Even though we only won one match, that match was a fantastic victory as we just got over the line with one wicket to spare, the guys were so pumped it was like winning a final. The season went by so quickly and unfortunately we struggled in most matches, but none of the juniors gave up. I would like to thank the club, all the players young an old who played with me over the 2008/2009 season, I would especially like to thank Barry Kave who still has a lot to offer. I am looking forward to the next season, the cricket bug has me again and I can not wait for it to start.

5th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Laurie Shneider

What a difference a change in seasons brings. Unable to make the 16-man squad for this XI in February 2008, here I am writing a review of the latter part of season 2008/9 as a fill in captain.

Thank you very much to the committee for giving me this opportunity and congratulations to Darren Seidl on doing a superb job as Chairman of Selectors in a record season for ''not available to play cricket'' - You treated every player equitably, fairly, justly and with respect and you enforced club selection rules and regulations - and above all you applied common sense. Before taking over the 5th XI mid way through the season, this cricket team was one of the most unprepared - from pre-season through to twice-weekly season proper – I’ve seen. What I managed to implement from January 11 onwards was a ‘team first’ strategy, where all players were given an opportunity with both bat and OR ball to actually play cricket and enjoy the feeling of being part of a sporting team. While not being successful in terms of winning games to play finals cricket, it was a pleasure to captain this great group of players in the Mercantile Cricket Association. The MCA is a well-run association with the following benefits: [a] The standard of cricket equivalent of VTCA South A2 [b] Minimum overs in two-day matches [c] 90-over one day games [d] Outstanding away facilities on and off the field [e] Healthy nutritious AFTERNOON TEA in a SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT [F] Two umpires per match [g] Covered wickets [h] Flexibility in fixturing [i] Premier Cricket finals hours of play and result rules. Well done to Benji Jones - whether with bat, ball, in the field or accepting umpires decisions - you were on the wrong this season but rest assured this will even out next season - you are an absolute credit to your upbringing and boy what a all round cricketer you are going to be.

Thank you to all the players for your magnificent support. A special thank you to Ian Jones for scoring every playing day and Jake and Leah for their assistance in this often underrated but vitally important task - it is much appreciated. To the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club - the holy grail of club cricket has not yet appeared at the David Mandie Pavilion and will not until the lessons of the meek surrender in the 2007/08 South A1 Grand Final are dealt with. That is only a disciplined, appreciative, respectful, united, selfless and mentally strong group of players playing for and with each other and with a strong work ethic will this long drought break. A good way to start the path to glory would be an intense FITNESS FIRST pre season commencing at the beginning of the 2009/10 financial year. JUNIOR CLUB REPORT – Mark Shapiro, President

When we continue to have successful seasons it is very difficult to change the content of my Junior club report. Excuse me if this sounds similar to last year but it does once again give me great pleasure to say that season 2008/09 has once again been a great success.

As far as results go, this was our most successful season ever but more importantly, we once again registered over 220 players, entered 16 teams in the league and for the most part everyone enjoyed another great season.

On a personal note, the highlight for me - even in a season as successful as this - was once again on the morning of round one when our 200-odd boys took to the field on various ovals in the region. Participation is what our club is about and if we can mix it with some success - even better.

On the field, the U11 Panthers won the Premiership and for the first time we had teams contesting grand finals in all age groups. The U15 Warriors and U13 Cobras unfortunately lost their grand finals and the U17 Red team won the premiership. There were some outstanding individual efforts and although these results are pleasing I am more proud of the way all 15 teams played the game and participated, as far as I am concerned they are all winners.

Our aim is still to be competitive but at the same time to give everyone a fair go. Besides at U11 level, this mission still continues to challenge us and as long as we play in ungraded leagues and age groups with two-year windows, the challenge will continue.

As a club, we can continue to look forward to further improvements. The new pavilion, new nets and resurfaced ovals at Caulfield Park will be ready for next season which will provide for a well overdue but magnificent facility. The junior and senior clubs continue to enjoy a fantastic relationship with the juniors making significant contributions at senior level, both in results and numbers.

I would like to sincerely thank my hard-working committee, all of the parents, coaches and team managers, and of course the players for a magnificent effort this season. Mark Shapiro President MAJCC

The Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club Past Players Association

proudly presents the…

2nd Annual PPA Golf Day Monday 16 November 2009

Back by popular demand!! The Maccabi Ajax Cricket Club in conjunction with their Past Players Association (PPA) invites you to the second annual Golf Day. This year we head off to the sublime greens and layout of the Cranbourne Golf Club who have kindly and generously agreed to support this event. Once again the format will be Ambrose in teams of four and we hope to increase our numbers from last year's extremely successful launch. Once again too we hope that we almost have as many prizes as we do players! The date has already been set as Monday 16th November with a morning shot gun start, so mark it in your diary - form a team of 4 or register individually. Prices will remain the same as last year - $120 per player or $400 for a group of 4. This includes buffet continental breakfast, refreshments during the round, a BBQ lunch and beverages afterwards and prizes. Last year's event was a tremendous day and this year's promises to be even better. For more details or sponsorship enquiries please call Leon Jacobs on 0402 00 66 88.
