Dear Bulldog Parents and Students, I was so glad to see all of our Bulldogs back at Wilson this week after time off for Hurricane Irma. I hope that your families are returning to some normalcy. Please remember that stress looks different in all of us, parents, teacher and children. It may take some time for all of us to be back at full speed… we all have some lingering effects of Hurricane Brain. Last week, the staff ensured that the students had a soft re-entry to the school year. We reviewed concepts that had already been taught and spent time making sure we were “all okay.” We will slowly ramp things back up to full speed. Remember that we have a full student services team in place here at Wilson to support students if they are struggling in any way. Reach out to your counselor if you or your child needs support. Dear Bulldog Parents and Students,

I was so glad to see all of our Bulldogs back at Wilson this week after time off for Hurricane

Irma. I hope that your families are returning to some normalcy. Please remember that stress

looks different in all of us, parents, teacher and children. It may take some time for all of us to

be back at full speed… we all have some lingering effects of Hurricane Brain.

Last week, the staff ensured that the students had a soft re-entry to the school year. We

reviewed concepts that had already been taught and spent time making sure we were “all

okay.” We will slowly ramp things back up to full speed. Remember that we have a full student

services team in place here at Wilson to support students if they are struggling in any way.

Reach out to your counselor if you or your child needs support.

Sincerely,

Colleen V. Faucett Principal

Please see the information and consent forms in this newsletter for students to receive a flu

shot at school this week. Students must have the official, signed consent form returned in

order to take advantage of this free service.

We currently have about 60 Wilson students that ride their bike daily to school. Please ensure

that your child has (AND WEARS) his/her helmet. If your child needs a helmet, please email

Ms. Melius by clicking here. She will ensure that your child has one that is properly fitted.

PTSA Meeting on Tuesday, 9/26/17 at 6:00pm All Wilson families are invited to our first general membership meeting of this school

year. We will approve the 2017-2018 budget, talk about volunteer opportunities

within the school and Mrs. Faucett will give an overview of last year’s academic progress and the goals for the new school year.

WWMS PTSA Volunteer Opportunities

Want to get involved at Wilson Middle School?

We have several volunteer positions still available.

Please contact Marlo Woodward at [email protected], or 813-753-9713.

Thank you Ms. Meyers

Due to lower than expected enrollment in our our Exceptional Student Education

Department, our teaching units have been reduced from 3 teachers to 2 teachers. We thank

Courtney Meyers for her service as a member of our staff and wish her the very best as she

moves on to Hill Middle School.

SPOKEN WORD POETRY CLUB

Wilson's Spoken Word Poetry Club is forming now. SWPC members listen to different Spoken Word poets perform their work and share insights into their processes. Our guest poets will also lead workshops with SWPC members and inspire them to write their own poetry. In February, the members of the club will perform their own original poetry at a small Spoken Word event right here at Wilson. We limit the number of people who attend our Spoken Word night to create a safe, intimate environment for the brave poets who partici-pate. The club will meet 4 times, about once a month, during school hours. Interested stu-dents should pick up an application in the Media Center. The deadline to return completed applications is Friday, Sept. 29th.

BELL SCHEDULE SURVEY and MEETINGS

If you haven’t yet completed the bell schedule survey that Hillsborough County Public Schools is conducting, please do so at your earliest convenience. There are 2 parent sessions if you have questions or input. Please encourage your child to complete the survey as well. Everyone's input is important. Here is an explainer video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HYTet4Sxj0&feature=youtu.be

The surveys can be found by clicking below. ENGLISH SURVEY SPANISH SURVEY

DUKE Talent Identification Progam

Seventh grade students who qualify for the Duke Talent Identification Program will be notified on September 29 and will receive

an invitation for their parents to attend one of two scheduled informational sessions. The two sessions are on October 5 at

7:45am and 5:30pm in the Wilson auditorium. Both sessions will cover the same material; you need not attend both. If a student

is to participate, parent attendance at the informational session will be helpful to understand the process to ready your child to

take the SAT or ACT and sign him or her up online for the program.

Students qualify by first, being in seventh grade; and, second, scoring at the 95th or greater percentile in either reading or math on

the FSA last year or the year before. Scaled scores are converted to percentiles for qualification purposes. ALL QUALIFIED

STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN AN INVITATION ON SEPTEMBER 29th.

Procedures and questions will be addressed at either of the meetings. The Wilson contact person for the Duke TIP program is

the 7th grade school counselor, Sarah Beth Glicksteen, [email protected].

During September Wilson Visual Art students have been using knowledge and skills learned to draw facial features

and proportions to create self-portraits which also symbolically express aspects of their lives and personalities. Our

featured artist for this unit is the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo who is infamous for her expressive, symbolic, and

sometimes Surrealistic self-portraits. Amazing artwork from amazing Wilson Bulldogs #rockstars

Thank you to the following sponsors of our Dance-A-Thon

which has been rescheduled for 10/20/17.

As our children get older we allow them

more freedoms, like walking to and from school.

The state of Florida

has a great website to search

for registered sexual offenders and predators that

are believed to be residing in or around the school,

your home, your neighborhood, the park or

where ever your child may be.

I am asking all parents review information

found on this site with their child(ren) in whatever

manner you see fit.

This information is available to you,

via the internet, at

http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/homepage.do

You can then select search options.

It can also be accessed from the Woodrow Wilson

Middle School website, http://wilsonms.mysdhc.org,

by clicking “For Parents” and the “Keeping Your

Child Safe”.

Should you have any questions

about this information, please do not hesitate

to contact our school TPD officer,

Lou Molina at 276-5682 ext. 228.

KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE HISTORY FAIR ALL Wilson students are invited to participate in this year's

History Fair this December.

Wilson's History Fair will showcase history research projects

by Wilson students and although the judging won't take place

until December, students who wish to participate need to get

started very soon. Wilson's History Fair is affiliated with the

National History Day competition at the University of Mary-

land.

The top two winners in each category advance to the district

History Fair in February, with the potential of also advancing to

the state and national competitions. Completing a History Fair

project impacts students deeply by helping them to gain mental

stamina, acquire advanced historical research skills, and develop

a nuanced understanding of the significance of historical events.

Most importantly committing to completing a History Fair pro-

jects builds the kind of self-confidence that can only come from

successfully accomplishing a long-term, challenging task.

Students who work on History Fair can count on support from

Social Studies teachers and the Media Specialist during school

hours too, so students won't travel the road alone, unless they

want to.

Students who are interested in participating in this year's Histo-

ry Fair should contact their Social Studies teacher or see Ms.

Sanchez in the Media Center. You can find more information

about the project requirements at nhd.org.
