Feast of St. Michael, The Archangel “Rejoice, Michael, the great Commander, with all Heavenly Powers”

St. Michael the Archangel - the names Michael signifies “Who is Like God” and was the war cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against Satan and his followers. Holy Scripture describes St. Michael as “one of the chief princes,” and leader of the forces of heaven in their triumph over the powers of hell. He has been especially honoured and invoked as patron and protector by the Church from the time of the Apostles. As members of a parish dedicated in his honor, we ought to appeal often to him, asking for his

protection and guidance as we struggle against the forces which pull us away from the practise

of our faith.

Today we celebrate the feast of our patron saint. On this feast, we extend a heartfelt thanks to all our parishioners and guests who are celebrating with us. This is a day of thanksgiving and praise to God for all the gifts that have been bestowed on our parish during the past year. And indeed we have many - all our children, the beautiful families and our wonderful seniors. For all our hard working organizations and for the many dedicated and talented men and women who give so much of themselves for the good of our parish. Today we ask that our Lord and patron saint protect and bless each and everyone with peace, love and health. We ask that God will bless all those who carry the name “Michael”. To all those who are ill or shut in, we pray that God will grant them blessings of strength and courage .

St. Phillips Fast ( Pre-Nativity Fast) Begins Wednesday, Nov. 15th

The Pre-Nativity Fast (Advent) is called the Philippian Fast in the Ukrainian Catholic Church because it begins on the day after the feast of St. Phillip. The fast was introduced to prepare the church for a worthy celebration of the great and holy days of the birth of Christ and Theophany of our Lord. The fast is an ancient practice which lasts 40 days and helps us to better understand and appreciate all of God’s saving plan. The Fast prepares us for the Nativity and the events that follow and prepare us to receive the public ministry of Christ announced at Theophany. The Purpose of the Nativity Fast The purpose of the Nativity Fast is to draw closer to God through denying the body by fasting with repentance and humility. . The fast is not solely based on refraining from eating certain foods. It is also based on fasting from sin, increasing one's prayer life, increasing the practice of almsgiving and good works. So then rather than approaching this Nativity season with feelings of anxiety and distress, dedicate yourself to the true spirit of the season and the greater purpose that lies within: the salvation and healing of the world.

A cordial INVITATION is extended to all parishioners of St. Anne and St. Michael Parishes to come out and enjoy a live performance at St. Anne Parish, 35 Marcie St.

Gospel Reflection: Luke 10:16-21 (For Feast of St. Michael)

Do you know the joy of the Lord? The scriptures tell us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Jesus assures His disciples that He has all power over evil, including the power of Satan and the evil spirits or fallen angels who conspire against us. In fact, that is why Jesus came into the world to overthrow the evil one (John 12:31). We, too, as disciples of Jesus have been given spiritual authority and power for overcoming the works of darkness and evil Jesus contrasts intellectual pride with child-like simplicity and humility. The simple of hearts are like "babes" in the sense that they see purely without pretense and acknowledge their dependence and trust in the one who is greater, wiser, and more trustworthy. Simplicity of heart is wedded with humility, because humility inclines the heart towards grace and truth. Just as pride is the root of every sin and evil, so humility is the only soil in which the grace of God can take root. It alone takes the right attitude before God and allows Him as God to do all. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. The grace of Christ-like humility inclines us to God and disposes us to receive God's wisdom. Nothing can give us greater joy than the knowledge that we are God's beloved and that our names are written in heaven. Do you seek to be like Jesus Christ in humility and simplicity of heart?

Gospel Reflection : Luke 8: 26-39 (For This Sunday)

Do you ever feel driven by forces beyond your strength? A man who was possessed and driven mad by the force of many evil spirits found refuge in the one person who could set him free. Both Mark and Luke in their Gospel accounts of this incident describe this demonic force as a legion . A legion is no small force – but an army 6,000 strong! For the people of Palestine who were often hemmed in by occupied forces, a legion struck terror! Our age has also witnessed untold crimes and mass destruction at the hands of possessed rulers and their armies. God's word reminds us that no destructive force can keep anyone from the peace and safety which God offers to those who seek his help. Jesus took pity on the man who was overtaken by a legion of evil spirits. The destructive force of these demons is evident for all who can see as they flee and destroy a herd of swine. After Jesus freed the demoniac the whole city came out to meet him. No one had demonstrated such power and authority against the forces of Satan as Jesus did. They feared Jesus as a result and begged him to leave them. Why would they not want Jesus to stay? Perhaps the price for such liberation from the power of evil and sin was more than they wanted to pay. The Lord Jesus is ready and willing to free us from anything that binds us and that keeps us from the love of God. Are you willing to part with anything that might keep you from His love and saving grace?
