    Methodology

    Individual competitors were to plan a PR project that consisted of a written paper and an oral presentation. I created an entire campaign for a fictional non-profit organization to raise money and awareness for a charitable cause. We were judged on business strategy, originality, and presentation skills.

    Reflections

    This put me in a creative leadership position to learn how to develop budget campaigns on my own.

    Description

    When I attended NTC, I joined the Business Professionals of America Club. This program measures a member's level of leadership through competitions as well as their service to their community by participating in the Torch Awards program.

    Methodology

    I competed in the category of economic research, and I became a finalist to move onto nationals. For my project, I submitted an APA style research paper. I also had to incorporate my own thoughts into my research of how a decline in the global economy affects entrepreneurs on both macro and micro levels.

    I also designed the 2010 WI BPA pins. The instructions for the contest were to combine something symbolic of Wisconsin with the theme, "Reaching for the Stars." There was one submission from every school in the state.

    Reflections

    The experience prepared me for when I became an entrepreneur. I reverted back to my paper for tips to fight economic struggle and break even quickly as a start-up business.

  • Get Signed Up to Spring into Shape By Stephanie Huhta, Northwoods YMCA (Rhinelander Daily News) Published 03/31/08

    The verge of summer is the time to get fit, so be sure to sign up for Spring II programs at the YMCA. Opportunities for both kids and adults are available to learn self-defense, join a league, or get a full-body tone. The exercises are made for people to have fun while getting healthy and energized for sunny weather.

    At the YMCA, people can work out, learn yoga, or relax in the pool. Our programs are a great way to better your spirit, mind, and body, says assistant executive director Greg Woller.

    As far as fitness goes, there are plenty of classes offered to all fitness levels. The classes are generally 60 minutes and are taught by qualified, accommodating instructors. The most popular classes that people join are aquatic activities, martial arts, cardio, and Pilates.

    There will also be Member Value Programs, known as MVPs, which are selected classes and activities for members at no expense. Spring II is offering Family Fun Nights, Mini-Mite Tee Ball, Family Water Safety Week, Week Sessions, Go-Shin Karate, Teen Fitness, and Gym Ventures for the next sessions MVPs. The Welcome Center can help with further information of Spring II MVPs.

    Program guides have all the necessary information on classes and upcoming events, and they can be found on the YMCA of the Northwoods website and facility as well as the outreach community centers.

    Registration for programs can be done online, over the phone, or in person starting at 7 a.m. on April 2 for members and April 4 for the general public.

    In my Business Development class, I acted as the marketing director and explored cross-functional collaboration in a leadership role. Other students acted as the director of HR, director of IT, COO, and the CFO. My role was to create a proposal of an updated business model for a fictional company.

    Methodology

    The assignment was to choose any three areas to modify. I chose research, promotions, and e-commerce. My overall goal was to encourage creativity, and I came up with some starter ideas. The CFO then made sure everything was within budget.

    Reflections

    Everything in this proposal came to me in the time span of one meeting. I was able to plan, problem solve, and think creatively under pressure.

    Objectives

    We need innovation in our marketing mix. Our profits have been steady the last 3 years, so this year our company will be making modifications in order to see our sales increase 200% gradually over the coming 5 years. Our products speak for themselves, but our current model has become outdated. Our CFO has given us a green light of $60,000 to invest in business development and redefining our marketing strategies.

    Promotions, PR, and Customer Appreciation

    We need to advertise the reason why our products make great gifts, while making them easier to afford around the busiest consumer shopping months. With this in mind, we are trying philanthropic project to get more publicity within the community while at the same time contributing to a local charity. Between November 1st and December 23rd, we will operate a booth at various holiday events to help out Toys for Tots. Our plan is to sell coffee and hot chocolate with the option of purchasing it through our mugs, and all proceeds from the drinks will go to charity. The accounting department will be administrating the budget and proceeds while HR and marketing staff manage the booth.

    As for customer appreciation, last years numbers showed that the greatest percentage of sales came from B2C sales. Therefore, we developed a plan for our sales team to focus on B2B sales. Our primary target will be selling to companies that purchase our products for their employees. We'll begin by offering large quantity discounts on orders over $1000 immediately. At this time, we have the approval to offer corporate discounts of 5%.

    Our big picture plan will be customization as we work alongside operations, accounting, and IT. We will soon unveil new printing equipment where consumers can print images and text onto the mugs. Since we already have the quotes and the permission from the CEO, we will be putting a lot of focus on developing this feature over the next 6 months. The ultimate goal is to multiply our commercial orders as companies will be able to personalize our products with their logos. Our IT department will work with a third party to design a system where customers can upload and edit images.

    E-Commerce and Social Media

    We need to take our basic platforms to a new level because our time and resources spent on social media is extravagant unless it is done properly. The first step will is to create a blog to connect with consumers on a personal level. The idea is to share subjects such as drink and soup recipes, health tips, humor, fun facts, and relative news and trends. We will be posting a new opening for the position to take on this role. In addition, we will be scrapping our current YouTube commercial style and starting over. One idea is to have someone play the role of a recurring character that attends events or goes off site to conduct comical interviews with other businesses for better networking.

    This would be a fun, creative project with little financial investment. If it picks up popularity then we can look into creating more video clips and possible animation. We have some creative marketing employees that will be excited to try this out. We thought about starting out by going to college campuses to ask students humorous questions relative to lifestyle in exchange for the product. This would give us three benefits:

    1. We could gain publicity with the possible opportunity to start a new trend of using our productsamong college students.

    2. We would acquire information on target consumers and learn ways to reach them through ourproducts and advertising.

    3. We can get followers on social media faster if we do an interview style approach to our YouTubechannel as people would want to see themselves on the internet.

    As for web improvements, the marketing department has also been sharing tentative plans with our IT department. Our next goal is to make our website more attractive and interactive before the end of the 2013 fiscal year by hiring a UI/UX programming team. We also need to launch a mobile site as we are now at the pinnacle of smartphones and tablets.

    The last thing that we are looking into at this time is persuading online customers to return. However, warming leads would be too expensive and unnecessary as our products aren't items of need that consumers buy repeatedly. Instead, we will be working through our SEO and SEM plans to get consumers to opt-in to newsletter emails that include engaging topics such as recipes, humor, contests, and community activity. The director of IT and I have chosen the best route is to use a cost efficient CRM program and hire a freelance professional during the beta stages. An added bonus is that we will be able to distribute promotions by email during holidays and other opportunities.

    Research

    We encourage creativity, especially now that we will be addressing the expansion of our product line. Within the next two weeks, our department heads will be hiring a market research contractor that will be working with our team of marketing generalists. The marketing and sales supervisors will then start a team to launch surveys in a constructive analysis process to investigate latest sales trends among select demographics. Other questions to explore are:

    What products could we incorporate into our line-up that are cost efficient for production?Should we consider selling our own brand of packets for instant specialty drinks for on-the-go enjoyment?

    When would be the best time to meet with business developers of retail stores, and what would the negatives and positives of a partnership be? How will the increase of publicity outweigh the decrease in profit margin?

    How can we motivate our sales team? Should we offer more incentive on self-generated leads and new business connections?

    For what reasons might a customer decide to order more products, and how can we create impulse for return customers besides suggesting gift giving?

    In which directions should our marketing department aim to broaden our target markets?

  • I have written endless professional letters through marketing and volunteering. Most of my business has been generated through written communication.

    Letters come in all forms. I recently wrote a political paper that was published and sent to the Wisconsin State Capitol. My political party has since trusted me to represent them writing letters to the editor of newspapers.

    The first sample letter is from a project where I tripled the sales in one area from the previous year within 6 months.

    The second page is the first letter that I sent out to consumers to advertise my business. I continued to use it in various forms because of its success.

    Older leads are the most challenging type of leads to nurture through drip marketing. An open rate of 26% is considered successful, but I achieved average open rates of 41% on dead leads.

  • Worst company I've ever worked with. They really need more employees, because whenever you need a tech to come fix something the wait is like a week. Who should have to deal with that and rent their equipment. The company is too frugal!!!! And they will lose lots of business because of it.     Had a service tech come to my home to check out the water softener , reverse osmosis system. When he left he failed to reconnect the osmosis system which we use as our primary drinking water. When I called the next day to have some come out and turn it back on I was told that there was no one available and because it was the start of a holiday weekend no one could come out until Tuesday. Four days out. It is my opinion that the manager of the facility or someone there should have come to my house fixed the problem and then have a chat with the tech to make sure this did not happen again. I now need to buy bottle water for the four days I wait for Culligan to come out and they are not offering to reimburse me for that even though they caused the problem. Very poor service.
