CONCERT REVIEW:Anastasiya KryvanosBy Tom Sparkes

“MY RECITAL tonight willbe a history of music forclassical guitar,” said Ana-stasiya Kryvanos. Beyondthe walls of St Tudwal’schurch in Llanstadwell thewind was strengtheningas predicted by variousweather warnings, butinside silence fell.

Anastasiya began theconcert with severalcompositions by EnglishRenaissance composer JohnDowland. Originally thethree pieces were intendedto be played on lute, a pre-decessor of the guitar, butin Anastasiya’s hands theysounded just as delicateand precise. As she playedentirely without amplifica-tion, the audience fillingthe church collectively satforward on their pews tolisten, and were rewardedwith an extremely intimateperformance. So quietly satthe audience that at timesI could hear my own penscratching the page as Isketched out notes for thisarticle.

The last Renaissance pieceof the evening was AnthonyHolborne’s Galliard “HeighHo Holiday.” The Galliardwas a form of Renaissancedance popular across muchof Europe during the 16thCentury, and was at thetime quite a complex dance(think left, right, left, right, cadence…or somethingalong those lines). Anastasi-ya performed with rhythmicaplomb, impressive fluidityand technical prowess.

As the shadows slowlyelongated with the set-ting sun we entered theBaroque era. As I readin the programme thatAnastasiya would be play-ing J.S Bach’s “Suite in AMinor” I decided that no

better choice could havebeen made to honour theperiod. The suite is one ofonly two lute suites whichBach wrote from scratch.Others exist, but only asreworkings of violin orcello compositions. The firstmovement, the Preludio, is athrough-composed move-ment which remains intwo voices throughout. Theupper voicing is flexible andtightly ornamented, whilstthe lower voicing provides asteady accompaniment. Thedexterity required to playthis piece is considerable, but Anastasiya gave such anaccomplished performancethat when I closed my eyesit was easy to imagine twoguitarists sitting where onlyone sat in reality. The Giguewhich succeeds the Preludiois elegantly written and

was performed with deepsensitivity. This is a techni-cally difficult suite to play, although when done wellit does not sound so, andAnastasiya has an abilityto make her guitar almostsing with expression; a featnot readily accomplishedby many other classicalguitar players.

Anastasiya moved theprogramme forward intothe Romantic period with acomposition by FranciscoTárrega; his “Prelude in AMinor”. How Tárrega cameto play the guitar is aninteresting diversion. As asmall boy he escaped fromhis nanny one afternoononly to fall foul of an irriga-tion ditch into which hefell, injuring his eyes. Hisfather, fearing that one dayhis son may lose his vision

entirely, decided to movehome so Tárrega couldstudy music. His reasoningwas that even if his sonwent blind he could stillplay. “Prelude in A Minor”is a short piece, incred-ibly so in fact, but it is ascharming as it is short.

As we arrived into theTwentieth Century I fearedthat the evening wouldpass all too quickly. For thenext piece Anastasiya hadchosen Manuel De Falla’scomposition written tohonour the passing of hisfriend Claude Debussy.“Homenaje pour le Tom-beau de Debussy” is a mas-terpiece written by one ofthe world’s greatest com-posers. Benjamin Britten, upon hearing it performedby Julian Bream, said,“The piece is only seven

minutes long but there istwenty minutes of musicin it.” I am more familiarwith the classical guitar ina flamenco setting with allits fiery passion and fiercerhythmic stance, but Ana-stasiya’s performance ofthe “Homenaje” revealedan incredible honesty andvulnerability in the instru-ments timbre that I hadnot heard before. From thewonderfully atmosphericopening passage throughto flighty arpeggiatedchords and the etherealuse of natural harmonics,Anastasiya gave a perfor-mance rich in dynamiccontrast. This is whatmusic sounds like whena performer is passionateabout what they play.

The recital came toa close with two LeoBrouwer compositionsthe last of which, “Un DiaDe Novembre”, was anexquisite conclusion to theevening’s music. Origi-nally composed to be thesoundtrack for a HumbertoSalas film of the samename, it became infinitelymore popular than thepicture it was designed toaccompany. At the end of atremendous performancethe last note faded away asthough nothing had everhappened.

As I have come to expectfrom the St Tudwal’sMusic for a Summer Even-ing performances an hourof inspiring and accom-plished music slipped byunrestrained. Saddenedthough I was that I couldnot spend another hourlistening to Anastasiyaperform, I left the blusterygrounds of St Tudwal’sChurch thoroughly excitedabout what the next con-cert would bring.
