FUNDING UPDATE

On 17 May, the Centre received a letter from Jenny Mikakos MP advising the Victorian Budget 2018/2019 was investing a further $21.8 million across the neighbourhood house network. Eligible neighbourhood houses currently funded less than 25 hours per week had been invited to participate in an expression of interest process to increase their coordination hours to 25 hours per week. Further, unfunded neighbourhood houses (THAT’S US), will soon be invited to apply for funding of up to 25 coordination hours per week. As we go to print of this program, the invitation has been received with a deadline of 31 July to submit our application as long as we meet the guideline requirements. This is a lengthy document and a lot of work to put the application together but we are going to give a good try, so please cross all your fingers and toes. As we still have a long way to go (as this is a lengthy process and not guaranteed that we will receive any funding), we still need your help. We are therefore still needing new sources of funding to continue to meet our community educational, health and wellbeing, special interests and social needs, and to ensure ongoing coordination of the Centre and its programs, and very importantly, to keep our community connected.

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP?

Donations Through the Australian Neighbourhood Houses & Centres Association (ANHCA) the Centre now has Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR) status. This means that all donations of $20 and more are tax deductible. Donations would have to be processed through the ANHCA Public Fund. Donors must contribute unconditionally to the ANHCA Public Fund to claim a tax deduction. However, a donor may indicate an organisation or project as the preferred beneficiary for their gift. Please see Debra for appropriate forms to be completed.

Sponsorship Do you know of a business that would be keen to support the Centre with ongoing sponsorship? Even a one off sponsorship payment would be warmly accepted.

Philanthropic Sponsorship We are looking for opportunities to receive philanthropic donations or grants from companies and /or foundations with a similar vision to that of the Centre, namely, to provide our community with a greater sense of wellbeing and belonging. Have some ideas? Then chat to Debra.

OUR AUTUMN MARKET DAY

On Saturday 12 May we held our first Market Day and what a great day it was! The weather was good to us, cold but the rain held off. Thank you to all our wonderful stall holders and volunteers for getting up so early and braving the weather. Thank you also to all who attended the market and supported our local community members and businesses.

We are planning another market for spring, details will be in our term 4 program so keep a look out.

DONATION TO HOLY FOOLS,

LILYDALE For those that attended our Health Expo in October last year, you may recall we were asking attendees to join in to knit and/or crochet up some small squares to help make up a blanket that would then be donated to the homeless. Well……… after the Expo, our Sticks and Hooks Craft Group took the project on board to complete the blanket and knitted further squares, then sewed them altogether to make a very warm and colourful blanket ready to donate. However, they didn’t stop there….. they then got busy making wind cheaters, scarfs, beanies toiletry bags and more blankets. What a team of kind hearted members we have. On Tuesday 5 June we packed all the goodies up (4 blankets, 2 scarves, 2 toiletry bags, 3 beanies and 32 wind cheaters, yes 32 wind cheaters) and delivered them to Holy Fools in Lilydale who were extremely thankful and will ensure all items are issued out to those in need for the cold months ahead.

Well done Sticks and Hooks team and thank you so much

COMMUNITY EDIBLE FOREST GARDEN PLANT PROFILE

CRITHMUM MARITIMUM, ROCK SAMPHIRE

What a beauty this plant is! Also known as Sea Fennel or True Samphire it is a perennial plant with blue-green stems and leaves and yellow-green flowers. Though this species is seldom found far from the sea and usually growing on steep cliffs or sandy beaches, it is very adaptable to cultivation and a variety of soils, as long as they are allowed to dry out and there is no standing water. Stems which have flowered should be cut back hard or to the base, in order to keep the plant handsomely compact. Easily grown in the garden, the handsome, succulent, blue-green foliage have an unusual texture and contrast nicely with many plants. And the added bonus of edibility makes it all the more worthwhile to grow. https://www.seedaholic.com/crithmum-maritimum-rock-samphire Somewhere between asparagus & capers in flavor, it is rich in Vitamin C, E & K, & Omega 3. It can be steamed as a vegetable, pickled or eaten raw.

KEEP THE YARRA VALLEY FRUIT FLY FREE

A message from Bronwyn Koll, Queensland Fruit Fly Regional Coordinator Yarra Valley about the importance of preventing Queensland Fruit Fly from entering the Yarra Valley. Prevention, what can I do? Teach others in the community about the importance of garden hygiene, prevention & reporting.

Remove unmanaged host plants - Insist neighbours & public land managers do too

Prevent infested fruit entering your property and our Yarra Valley!

Remove all ripe fruit—prevent QFF being attracted to your crop

Keep all host plants well managed, at a height you can harvest

Monitor regularly Report any suspect damage

Residents are urged to: Not carry infested fruit into the Yarra Valley Boil or Freeze any suspect fruit Check gardens regularly- and even hang

traps Pick ripe fruit often and pick up all the

dropped fruit to prevent any larvae (if present) moving through the ground and completing their lifecycle.

Report suspect cases to Bronwyn Koll 0490381999 or [email protected]

Dispose of suspect infested fruit in the bin - only after it has been treated with freezing, microwaving or solarising, to kill the suspect larvae, and double bagged. Do not compost untreated infested fruit and veg! This allows the pest to continue through its life cycle, and more adult flies could emerge. What do I do if I suspect fruit fly damage in my garden? • Notify the YV coordinator • Increase monitoring • Use bait, traps and netting • Pick all infested fruits, treat to kill larvae (cook or freeze) and dispose into the rubbish bin in a sealed bag, not the compost! Join my Keep Yarra Valley Fruit Fly Free Facebook page, and visit fruitflyfreeyv.com.au for Yarra Valley updates! Message from Sergeant Richard Coulson, Station Commander Yarra

Glen Police Station HOME AND VEHICLE SECURITY Residents are requested to ensure that they lock vehicles and either remove valuables or secure them in a location of the vehicle where they will be out of sight. Recently in Yarra Glen an offender has entered a home overnight while the occupants were asleep via an unlocked front door and located a set of car keys. The offender has then stolen the victim's car which had been left unlocked in the driveway. On the same night the same offender also entered another unlocked vehicle at a neighbouring house and rummaged through the car but no belongings were taken. The message is don't be paranoid, incidents of this nature in this area are rare but make it harder for an offender by ensuring vehicles and premises are kept locked and secured. Offenders are by nature opportunistic and it is important for residents to reduce the risk of becoming a victim by getting into a good habit of adopting minimal security measures which are easily achievable. ROAD SAFETY With winter now upon us it is important to undertake some basic measures to improve road safety. Measures that can easily be undertaken include checking tyres (including the air pressure and condition), the state of the windscreen wiper blades and also ensure that all your vehicle lights are working properly. Often a blown fuse can make the brake lights inoperative creating a risk to yourself and other road users. If you live alone consider getting a neighbour to help you and reciprocate the favour! If you don't feel confident completing some of the checks and don't have anyone to call on to assist, you can consider getting a check over completed by your local mechanic if necessary. Often with inclement conditions being experienced this time of the year it is important to ensure that you leave increased braking distances when required and always drive to the weather conditions and within your means. Be vigilant and regularly check your rear vision mirror. If someone is tailgating you, pull over at a safe location and let the person get on

their way. Consideration should be given to having your headlights on in poor weather conditions, particularly in foggy conditions where we often we see vehicles driving along with no lights on which greatly reduces their visibility to other road users. Most importantly it's about staying safe out there! POLICE HELP Did you know that when you require a police response it is best to call 000 instead of our local station? Apart from the fact the station is not always staffed, all calls to 000 are recorded and this may help to support the need for more police to be stationed in our area.

Fires in the Home On average, there are 3,000 house fires in Victoria. Most could be prevented by taking simple precautions. Prevent fires in your home Heaters, chimneys, electric blankets and clothes dryers can become a fire risk, particularly if they have been sitting unused for a period of time.

Book a licensed gas-fitter to check your gas heater

Check chimneys, flues and fire boxes for cracks, rust and debris

Check electric blankets for kinks in the wiring Clean the lint filter in your dryer (and

continue to do this after every use) Check appliances for visibly frayed or

damaged wiring Complete the Home Fire Safety Checklist to

see if you’ve done everything you can to protect you and your family.

Launch the Hotspot House to see how to keep your home safe

Only working smoke alarms save lives Without a working smoke alarm in your home you are:

57% more likely to suffer property loss and damage

26% more likely to suffer serious injury Four times more likely to die in a residential

fire than people with a working smoke alarm.

A working smoke alarm provides you with early warning of a fire and gives you time to escape safely. When you are asleep, you can’t smell smoke. It is law in Victoria to have at least one smoke alarm on each level of every home, however an extra smoke alarm in every bedroom where the door is closed when sleeping is recommended. good. Henry has also offered to come in once a week to maintain the order so we now have a
